San Diego First United Methodist Church "Heart of Christianity" Lesson for Sunday, 13 July 2014
We hope to see you Sunday.
Begin forwarded message:
Hi,
Here are my thoughts for next Sunday.
We will spend the next 2 weeks on Ch. 4. I think a logical way to divide it is physical and mental. So this Sunday (7/13), we will discuss the first part of the chapter. Here are some thoughts for your consideration:
1. Crossan talks about the body as a microcosm of society. In what ways do you see that evident in our society?
2. Crossan is very concerned that we not see the 1st century through our 21st century eyes. Do you think we can do that? What are the ways in which our world is like that world? What rituals and superstitions do we hold onto in regards to the body?
3. Why were skin diseases – lumped together as leprosy – such a frightening thing to 1st century people? Are they still frightening?
4. Crossan clearly does not believe that miracles happen. What do you think of his explanation for the healing Jesus did?
On 7/20 we will discuss the mental/psychiatric healings.
