Trinity United Methodist Church Daily Scripture Email Devotion for Tuesday, 8 July 2014 "Do you like Almonds?"
The word of The Lord came to me: "What do you see, Jeremiah?" I see the branch of an almond tree," I replied (Jer 1:11).
In the heat of these hot summer days, think back to early, cool days of Spring, with the beautiful dogwoods, azaleas and red buds. What comes to mind? For Jeremiah, what came to mind was the beautiful
almond tree. Imagine, as we saw in our recent trip to Israel at
springtime, whole countrysides covered with beautiful trees that look a lot like dogwoods - I had no idea almond trees were so beautiful.
At last I understood the meaning of this word from God to Jeremiah.
Here it is:
Just as surely as spring arrives every year, as evidenced by the
beauty of the blooming almond tree, so my word to you and to Israel is true. You and I can count on God's promises, even though it isn't always clear what's going on, but God is true and God is faithful.
And behind the fog, God is there. Remember the almond tree. And by the way, do you like almonds? I have come to love them! For more reasons now than before. Amen.
Remember, for the Sundays of July we will have only ONE worship
service - at 9:40
