Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey (Zechariah 9:9).
We often quote this next to the last book of the Old Testament on Palm Sunday, as I'm sure you can understand why. The setting is that the people of Israel have returned to Jerusalem from exile in Babylon, and are despondent because the country, city and temple all still lie in ruin. And then comes this amazing word of hope: God will not leave them forsaken, but will come among them.
Indeed, God has come to us in the person of Jesus, and continues to come to us, with salvation, and inspiring us to extend that grace and gentleness to all.
