Sunday's Scripture:
2 Kings 2:1-12
2 Kings 2:1 The time came for Adonai to take Eliyahu up into heaven in a whirlwind. Eliyahu and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal, 2 when Eliyahu said to Elisha, “Please wait here, because Adonai has sent me all the way to Beit-El.” But Elisha said, “As Adonai lives, and as you live, I will not leave you.” So they went down to Beit-El. 3 The guild prophets of Beit-El came out to Elisha and said to him, “Do you know that Adonai is taking your master away from you today?” “Yes, I know,” he answered; “say no more.”
4 Eliyahu said to him, “Elisha, please wait here, because Adonai has sent me to Yericho.” He replied, “As Adonai lives, and as you live, I will not leave you.” So they came to Yericho. 5 The guild prophets of Yericho approached Elisha and said to him, “Do you know that Adonai is taking your master away from you today?” “Yes, I know,” he answered; “say no more.”
6 Eliyahu said to him, “Please wait here, because Adonai has sent me to the Yarden.” He replied, “As Adonai lives, and as you live, I will not leave you.” So the two of them went on. 7 Fifty of the guild prophets went and stood watching them from a distance, while they stood by the Yarden. 8 Then Eliyahu took his cloak, rolled it up and struck the water with it; and the water divided itself to the left and to the right; so that they crossed on dry ground. 9 After they had crossed, Eliyahu said to Elisha, “Tell me what I can do for you before I am taken away from you.” Elisha said, “Please! Let a double share of your spirit be on me!” 10 He replied, “You have requested a hard thing. Nevertheless, if you see me when I am taken from you, you will get what you asked for; but if not, you won’t.”
11 Suddenly, as they were walking on and talking, there appeared a fiery chariot with horses of fire; and as it separated the two of them from each other, Eliyahu went up into heaven in a whirlwind. 12 Elisha saw it and cried out, “My father! My father! The chariots and horsemen of Isra’el!” Then he lost sight of him. Seizing his clothes, he tore them in half.
John Wesley's Notes-commentary for
2 Kings 2:1-12
Verse 1
[1] And it came to pass, when the LORD would take up Elijah into heaven by a whirlwind, that Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal.
About to take, … — It is supposed, (tho' not expressly revealed) that Elijah flourished about twenty years, before he was translated, body and soul, to heaven, only undergoing such a change, as was necessary to qualify him for being an inhabitant in that world of Spirits. By translating him, God gave in that dark and degenerate age, a very sensible proof of another life, together with a type of the ascension of Christ, and the opening of the kingdom of heaven to all believers.
Verse 2
[2] And Elijah said unto Elisha, Tarry here, I pray thee; for the LORD hath sent me to Bethel. And Elisha said unto him, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they went down to Bethel.
Tarry here — This he desires, either, 1. That being left alone, he might better prepare himself for his great change. Or, 2. Out of indulgence to Elisha, that he might not be overwhelmed with grief at so sad a sight. Or, 3. That he might try his love, and whet his desire to accompany him; it being highly convenient for God's honour, that there should be witnesses of so glorious a translation.
To Beth-el — Which was truth, tho' not the whole truth: for he was to go a far longer journey. But he was first to go to Beth-el, as also to Jericho, to the schools of the prophets there, that he might comfort, and strengthen their hearts in God's work, and give them his dying counsels.
Verse 3
[3] And the sons of the prophets that were at Bethel came forth to Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the LORD will take away thy master from thy head to day? And he said, Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace.
And said — This was revealed to some of the sons of the prophets, and by them to the whole college. In the kingdom of Judah they had priest and Levites, and the temple service. The want of these in the kingdom of Israel, God graciously made up by these colleges, where men were trained up and employed, in the exercises of religion, and whither good people resorted, to solemnize the appointed feasts, with prayer and hearing, tho' they had not conveniencies for sacrifice.
From thy head — Heb. from above thy head: which phrase may respect, either, the manner of sitting in schools, where the scholar sat at his master's feet. Or, the manner of Elijah's translation, which was to be by a power sent from heaven, to take him up thither.
Hold you your peace — Do not aggravate my grief, nor divert me with any unseasonable discourses. He speaks as one that was himself, and would have them calm and sedate, and with awful silence waiting the event.
Verse 7
[7] And fifty men of the sons of the prophets went, and stood to view afar off: and they two stood by Jordan.
To view — To observe this great event, Elijah's translation to heaven, which they expected every moment: and whereof they desired to be spectators, not to satisfy their own curiosity, but that they might be witnesses of it to others.
Verse 8
[8] And Elijah took his mantle, and wrapped it together, and smote the waters, and they were divided hither and thither, so that they two went over on dry ground.
Smote the waters — These waters of old yielded to the ark, now to the prophet's mantle; which to those that wanted the ark, was an equivalent token of God's presence. When God will take his children to himself, death is the Jordan, which they must pass through. And they find a way thro' it, a safe and comfortable way. The death of Christ has divided those waters, that the ransomed of the Lord may pass over.
Verse 9
[9] And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.
A double portion — Or, rather double to what the rest of the sons of the prophets receive at thy request. He alludes to the double portion of the first-born, Deuteronomy 21:17. But though Elisha desired no more, yet God gave him more than he desired or expected; and he seems to have had a greater portion of the gifts of God's Spirit, than even Elijah had.
Verse 10
[10] And he said, Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so.
A hard thing — A rare and singular blessing, which I cannot promise thee, which only God can give; and he gives it only when, and to whom he pleaseth.
If thou seest — This sign he proposed, not without the direction of God's Spirit, that hereby he might engage him more earnestly to wait, and more fervently to pray for this mercy.
Verse 11
[11] And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.
A chariot of fire — In this form the angels appeared. The souls of all the faithful, are carried by an invisible guard of angels, into the bosom of Abraham. But Elijah being to carry his body with him, this heavenly guard appeared visibly: Not in an human shape, tho' so they might have borne him in their arms, but in the form of a chariot and horses, that he may ride in state, may ride in triumph, like a prince, like a conqueror. See the readiness of the angels to do the will of God, even in the meanest services for the heirs of salvation! Thus he who had burned with holy zeal for God and his honour, was now conveyed in fire into his immediate presence.
Verse 12
[12] And Elisha saw it, and he cried, My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof. And he saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them in two pieces.
My father — So he calls him for his fatherly affection to him, and for his fatherly authority which he had over him, in which respect the scholars of the prophets are called their sons. He saw his own condition like that of a fatherless child, and laments it accordingly.
The chariot, … — Who by thy example, and counsels, and prayers, and power with God, didst more for the defence and preservation of Israel than all their chariots and horses. The expression alludes to the form of chariots and horses which he had seen.
Sermon Story "Transformation for Eternity" by Gary Lee Parker for Sunday, 15 February 2015 using 2 Kings 2:1-12
Yes, today is Transformation sunday, the day we remember that Jesus took James, John, and Peter to the mountaintop where Jesus was transformed, at least his clothe were, as white as any bleach could ever be and Moses and Elijah appeared to Jesus then the voice of the Father spoke about Jesus being His beloved son and they are to listen to Him and His words and deeds. We go from this story back to the the Old Testament where it was time for God to take Elijah to god's Heavenly Kingdom withour dying, Elijah was walking along with His student who earlier God told Elijah that Elisha would be his replacement prophet. Elijah during several times attempted to discourage Elisha from going with him to no success because Elisha said that he would continue to follow him. Even the other prophets at the schools of the prophets mentioned that Elijah was going to die or be taken to the Heavenly kingdom where elisha said be quiet because he knows. They continue to walk and as they came to the Jorday, Elijah took his cloak and hit the water in God's Name and the waters were parted where Elijah and Elisha walked across on dry ground. Elijah asked Elisha what he wanted and Elisha asked for a double portion of Elijah's spirit. Elijah replied that that was hard, but if he saw Elijah depart he wuold be given the double portion. Shortly a chariots of fire took Elijah up to God and Elijah's cloak was dropped at the feet of Elisha and Elisha picked it up and after he cried out to Elijah he began walking back. What characters in this story do you relate to? Have you ever been at the death bed of a saint and seen miraculous signs of they leaving the earthly body to gain there Heavenly Body as you sat and waited and prayed with them? I remember hearing the story of a student chaplain being in the room of a man who was a Vietnam Vet standing around the bedside with his family. During this time, the chaplain did know what to pray, but the chaplain remembered to pray in the man's ear just to embrace the forgiveness that you may have been alluding and as the chaplain prayed he noticed out the window the sun coming from behind the cloud and the nurse came in a stated that he was dead. What this a miraculoous sign or what? Have you experienced similar experience of God's Grace and mercy?

I Love to Tell the Story...
Not so long ago, I came across an old journal. Reading through pages of what I'd written brought back to mind stories that have formed me, but whose details I'd forgotten. I loved being reminded--recalling the sights and sounds and textures.
During Lent, I invite you to join me in digging back through your own stories. Each day, in a journaling project, you'll be invited to recall a different sort of story; each week, there will be a more general theme. I hope you will be thinking back through your own life, looking again at your stories.
One of the great things about doing this during Lent, is that it's also an occasion, in retrospect, to look at where God has been in all your journey. I believe that God is present in everything: the stories of awe, of joy, of humiliation, of sorrow, of uncertainly. Whether the stories make us laugh or cry, we are invited to listen to them for traces of God's amazing love.
Alongside our own stories, we will read the big story of God's love for the world. Our scripture passages through the season take us on a big-picture trip through the Bible, reading some of the most well-known stories and hearing again the story of God's life-giving love for us all. In those stories, we will find ways to make sense of our own stories.
I hope you will join in on this Lenten adventure. Join one of the six-week small groups, journal each day, tell your own stories and listen to the stories of others.
Grace and peace,
Pastor Molly
This Sunday, the 15th, is Transfiguration Sunday--we celebrate Jesus as he reveals a glimpse of the truly glorious holiness in him. Our Choir has a dazzling gospel arrangement of Handel's Hallelujah Chorus to sing, and the story of the Prophet Elijah's final time on earth is no less incredible. I hope you'll be with us in worship!

2015 Lenten Series and Study:
A Story to Tell
This year's Lenten study series is all about stories. It's about your life story, and about God's big story in scripture.
Our scriptures tell the big story of the good news of God's love for us.
Our life stories continue that story of love.
Throughout the season, you will be invited to be listening for and sharing stories of God, of faith, of transformation and of hope.
There are several ways to participate:
We are forming small groups, meeting at various times during the week. These groups will have a chance to tell each other stories, building community, and read key scripture stories together. It will be a meaningful time to learn the stories of our church, and to be more aware of how God is at work with us. Let us know if you're interested through this online form--as we form the groups, we will match you to a time that can work. We encourage you to invite other friends, too! Watch for a special email--with specifics about the times and places of the small group options.
We invite you to journal through the season; we will give you a prompt for reflection each day, inviting you to recall stories from your own life and family. You can find them on Twitter or Facebook, or pick up a sheet of labels to stick into your own journal each day. Labels will be available this Sunday.
Families and all people will be invited to share in a Round Robin Story-Sharing Journal, passing notebooks from home-to-home, and adding stories at each stop.Sign up (you or your family) here!
We will also find extra ways to tell stories in worship, at fellowship time, and anywhere else!
Lent begins Ash Wednesday (February 18) and continues through Easter on April 5.
Parking Reminder: If you are able, we encourage you to park at the Wells Fargo bank on Sunday mornings, and walk across the street, reserving the parking lot for those with mobility challenges or for new visitors. We also have a bike rack on the patio, for those who choose to bike to church! Thanks for your consideration.
Ash Wednesday Worship:
February 18
The United Methodist Churches in our Mission Area are sponsoring a combined Ash Wednesday Worship Service on Wednesday, February 18, at 7:30pm. This year, it will be hosted at El Segundo UMC (540 Main St, El Segundo), where Rev. Lee Carlile is pastor.
Members of our choir will join a Mass Choir for the evening, and our own Pastor Molly will be preaching. All ages are welcome, as we mark the beginning of the season of Lent with prayer and worship. The worship service will include imposition of ashes.
Ashes to Go
on the Redondo Pier
3:30-5pm, Wednesday, Feb 18
Pastor Molly will be at the circle end of Torrance Blvd, at the Redondo Pier on Ash Wednesday, offering prayer and imposition of ashes. You are welcome to walk up or drive by; invite others, as well.
In recent years, a growing movement of churches offering "Ashes to Go" has helped take the invitation to Lenten prayer and spiritual practice to the streets--making this invitation to humility, forgiveness and grace available to anyone who comes by.
You are also invited to share in a more formal worship service for AshWednesday at our Mission Area worship service that night, at 7:30 p.m. at El Segundo UMC.
Sunday Morning Adult Bible Study:
9:30-10:15am
Our Sunday morning Adult Bible study has resumed weekly meetings, now in Health Chapel. Led and coordinated by Helen Stockwell, this group will use an adult study curriculum from Cokesbury. The study presents stimulating lessons that explore the biblical message and how to apply it to daily life. The curriculum helps adults move from a focus on the Word to reflection on personal, family, church, and community concerns.
A class for families (and anyone else):
Understanding Communion (February 15) - 9:30-10:15amin Epworth Lounge
Pastor Molly will lead the second of two interactive classes, designed to help families understand the sacraments: baptism and communion. The classes are designed to help kids and adults learn together about these important parts of our church worship and tradition--people of any age are welcome.
These are opportunities to learn about our United Methodist tradition. Come to learn what we believe--and how it's different from other traditions. Deepen your understanding, and help your kids get more out of the worship. This class is also great for grandparents, godparents or friends who want to be able to help young people know more about the sacraments!

We're In This Together
"Over 370 Methodists gathered together on Saturday at a Cal-Pac West District Training Conference. Wow! We worshipped together, we ate together and we learned together. What I love about District meetings is that I am reminded we are not alone in our work for Christ. Redondo Beach is part of a global church that is full of disciples of Christ, working together, to make more disciples of Christ to transform this world into a better place. Sometimes the work is challenging and I feel the weight of its importance. Joining in worship and discussion with other disciples fills me with hope, joy and confidence that what we do in Redondo matters and yet, we are not alone in the work. I hope many of you will join..."

We're In This Together by Johnna Kosnoff
Over 370 Methodists gathered together on Saturday at a Cal-Pac West District Training Conference.  Wow! We worshipped together, we ate together and we learned together!  District meetings remind me that we are not alone in our work for Christ.  Redondo Beach is part of a global church full of disciples for Christ, working together to make more disciples for Christ, with hopes of transforming this world into a better place.  Sometimes the work is challenging and I feel the weight of its importance.  Joining in worship and discussion with other disciples fills me with joy, hope and confidence that what we do in Redondo matters and yet, we are not alone in the work. I hope many of you will join me for future District events and reap this same joy and encouragement.
While at this conference, I attended two workshops.  The first one was titled “Ministry with Young People – The Unique Struggles of this Generation.”  As a mom of an 18-year old, I found wisdom and encouragement in the information shared. As a Lay Leader, I found helpful insights to apply to our ministry for ages 18-35.  If you’d like to hear more, I’m happy to tell you more.  Just ask.
I was exhorted to get our mission area churches more connected at “A Guide to Being An Effective Lay Leader.”  Our mission area includes El Segundo, Redondo Beach First, St. Paul's, Faith and Hope UMCs. I’m excited to work with Pastor Molly and other church leaders to discover ways to connect our mission area congregations more frequently and deeply.  Joining our mission area churches in worship, fellowship and service is another way to share the joy and the work of Christ.  Our next opportunity is already planned: Ash Wednesday, when Pastor Molly will be preaching at El Segundo UMC. Please join me at this special mission area worship service to begin our season of Lent.
Tuesday is our Shrove Tuesday, a/k/a Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday, Pancake Dinner.  What is Shrove Tuesday?  Come to the pancake dinner and find out. Hope to see you there!
