In Matope, Malawi, torrential rain wrecked homes, washed away acres upon acres of crops, and left thousands vulnerable to hunger and illness.
Thanks to your generous support, we've brought crucial health care to this flood-ravaged community, sending the first weekly mobile clinic to Matope, Malawi, Thursday of last week—driving hours over washed out dirt roads with doctors, nurses, and vital medicines in tow.
For some in Matope, mobile clinics mean routine vaccinations and checkups. For others, like Elizabeth, it means timely follow-up for traumatic injuries sustained during the rains and flooding.
When heavy rain collapsed Elizabeth's roof, debris struck her leg, and she needed stitches to properly heal. At the mobile clinic, the nurse removed her sutures and prescribed an exercise regimen that would allow her to regain strength.
Every Thursday from here on out, we're treating hundreds of people for everything from injuries, to malaria, to respiratory illnesses, which spike as stagnant floodwaters persist. We're also distributing water purification tablets, which can avert outbreaks in fatal diarrheal illnesses like cholera and typhoid.
Thankfully, Gary, the heaviest rains are behind us, and the floods are slowly receding. But here in Matope, one of Malawi's poorest, hardest-to-reach communities, health care remains scarce and largely inaccessible.
Our weekly mobile clinics will help to fill this void, bringing health care where it's most needed.
