Worship: Sundays @ 8:15 am, 9:40 am, 11:00 am | Wednesdays @ 6:35 pm | Fridays @ 7:00 pm
Dear Friends,
I imagine you've already decided which Super Bowl ads were your favorite; there were lots of good ones, but my favorite ones were the ones that celebrated Dads. I know, the real goal was to sell a product, and perhaps tidy up a tarnished image of the NFL; whatever. But I really liked them - for these reasons:1. Just coming off a great Trinity Men's Retreat, with some really neat Dads, probably I had a heightened sensitivity, and I got to present one of the talks with my son, Darin, and that was even more special than I had imagined; he's such a neat guy, and a great Dad.
2. The data is very compelling: the difference when Dads are present in the lives of their kids and when they're not is, well, frightening; often it's devastating. There's often anger and rage and lack of self control - not always, I know, but it's real, and it's really sad.
One of the roles of the Church is "to be Dads/parents for kids when theirs are missing - Youth leader, Sunday School teacher, Scout leader, Upward Coach, etc. It takes all of us, especially in our day and time when extended families live hundreds of miles away.
3. Being a Dad is one of the greatest joys and responsibilities anyone can have. If you are one, celebrate it, embrace it, tell your family you love them and be there for them.
We are thrilled that the Day of Dedication for our new Accessible Playground has nearly arrived - this coming Sunday it will be our focus in worship and afterward as we celebrate Accessibility Sunday on Sunday morning, provide ribbons for each worshiper to then take to the playground and tie on to the fence with a prayer for all who come, and a formal dedication at 12:15.
And then, Sunday night we will have the talent/no talent show and pie auction. I understand they have recruited lots of amazing talent for this show, more than ever before, so you will want to attend and support this special ministry of Trinity.
Also this Friday, the 6th of February at 7pm in chapel, in honor of Black History Month, Rev. Cliff Patrick has assembled a great lineup of folks to participate in the Friday Night Praise service: Bartley Temple UMC male ensemble will sing and Karen Kirkman, Curator at Haile Plantation museum will do a presentation with photos about the slave history there. When I asked Cliff this past Sunday if he had seen the Movie, "Selma," he quietly said, "I lived Selma, I don't need to see it." Cliff brings enormous credibility to all that he does. I hope many of you will join him this Friday night.
Someone found a $100 bill on the ground between the worship center and the education building. If it is yours, please contact the church office.
Several of you have asked for the link to the video we showed on Sunday, you can find it here, or in the Sermon Archives for that day.
Finally, please note that our website will be down starting next Monday (the 9th) for a face-lift. It should only be down for a day or two, but the new Trinity app will still be operational for information.
Love and Prayers, Dan

I'm back from Cuba and processing the week I spent there. I'm thankful to have internet again and not feel disconnected from the world -- and I'm thankful for the opportunity to minister to and be ministered by some amazing people. Keep Cuba and the Methodist Church there in your prayers. This Wednesday I'm back preaching at the 6:35 service in the chapel where we'll be exploring/remembering our identity in God. Don't forget the Mission Study on Disabilities will also resume this Wednesday night. This will lead us into this special Sunday where we will dedicate our accessible playground and in the evening will have a Talent Show to benefit the Friendship Disability Group. I may or may not be singing a famous pop song at said talent show, so you better come and see! Blessings to you this week.

Grateful. That is the word that came to mind as I sat down to write this. On a personal note, I'm grateful that today Lenora and I celebrated 13 years of marriage. As one of Trinity's pastors, I'm grateful for you - the Church. From the awesome Men's Retreat on Saturday morning, to my time with this year's confirmands at the Confirmation Retreat later that afternoon, to yesterday's worship services, to the Sonlight rehearsal, to hospital visits, to a full day of meetings today, I am grateful to be with you at Trinity and that as the body of Christ we aren't "one part but many." Just wanted you to know. Thank you for all that you do to participate in God's work in the world.

This week's mission box supports our Inclusive Playground. For a couple years Trinity has been working on a playground for children of all abilities. We've received support from many folks and this has allowed us to, thiscoming Sunday, dedicate and present to the community this space and opportunity for all children to come together. There are still things that we would like to add to the playground that would help make it a more hospitable space, however. So we'd appreciate your continued help and support as we seek to serve those in our congregation as well as to be known as a congregation that welcome persons of all abilities. You'll hear more about this Sunday!
Are you looking for an opportunity to serve and make a huge difference in someone's life? We are putting together a team to travel to Port Au Prince, Haiti April 18-25. The team will be working with "Servants In Fellowship" and building homes for families still living in tents from the earthquake. The goal is to build as many of the nine homes that were funded by Trinity's Vacation Bible School this past summer. If you are interested in being part of this AMAZING POWER BUILD please contact the Missions office to find out more information or contact Ted to sign up. There is something for everyone to do.
Don't forget this Saturday you are invited at 7:00 p.m. to learn more about WATS - West Africa Theological Seminary. There will be a gathering at the home of Frank and Nancy Moses and you will have a chance to meet William Udatong the Provost of the Seminary. For more information please contact Frank Moses at 352-316-4197 or Nancy Moses at 352-316-4470. This is one of our missions that specifically targets evangelism. I pray that we may all find ways to share Jesus Christ with the world.

Faith Mission
Ward Simonton
Faith Mission, at 3701 NE 15th Street, is a collaboration of Trinity, Mt. Pleasant UMC, and the surrounding neighborhood. This neighborhood is within the 32609 zip code, one of the zip codes in our community identified with wide-ranging socioeconomic-related challenges. Often impacted by families living in or near poverty, challenges can include areas such as low educational achievement, health disparities, drug addiction, and underemployment.
Using education as an example, Rawlings Elementary is across the street from Faith Mission. Based on 2014 standardized test scores for Rawlings 4th grade students, only 18% of children were on grade level in reading and only 29% were on grade level in math. While there are very valid concerns about current standardized tests, these scores are alarmingly low. Nationwide, a 4th grader not at grade level has only a 1 in 7 chance of catching up in later grades and a dropout rate four times higher than average. Lack of early success in school has a huge impact on a child's future.
Good questions about Faith Mission are being asked right now. What are the priorities? What are the programs and activities that are planned? Three things may be helpful to share:
1. A process is underway to determine priorities, and patience will be key. The priorities were purposely not set within the Covenant that established this new mission site. It's the work of the Leadership Team and Mission Director in close collaboration with the neighborhood to prayerfully, thoughtfully, and patiently determine how Faith Mission can have the greatest impact over time.
2. Information gathering will be very helpful. The kind of information above on education combined with information gathered on other challenges families face in the neighborhood will help guide the priorities and programs.
3. Relationship-building is really important. Perhaps more important than information gathering are the relationships being built to draw upon the strengths that already exist within the neighborhood and to learn how working together as a community of faith we may most enhance the vitality and well-being of families in the area.
All that said, there is much activity going on! This week at Faith Mission -
* Renovations continue, and we thank Sue Tennant for her wonderful work on the huge job of painting the interior of the main building (35' ceilings and all!). What a job - and it looks great. Many thanks Sue. And thanks also to Jenn Garrett for the color scheme.

* Final preparations are underway for the Stop Now and Plan (SNAP) program, an evidence-based, early intervention program for elementary age children and their parents. SNAP is led by Melanie Kretzman and Shannon Petit and will soon begin weekly on Tuesday evenings.
* Discussions with area leaders are underway about outreach and how Faith Mission volunteers can support or enhance programs and activities in the neighborhood.
