The Redondo Beach, California, United States First United Methodist Church eNews: Work Day, Potluck, Wedding Reception & More! for Thursday, 28 April 2016 - New Sermon Series--"Life Before Death" Potluck and Children's Choir Rehearsal on Sunday, Trustees Work Day on Saturday

From Pastor Molly: Go
I've been doing a lot of reading, talking and praying in preparation for our United Methodist General Conference, which meets in Portland for 10 days this May. Our church leaders have been asking members of congregations throughout the world to be in prayer, too; our California-Pacific Conference has chosen May 1 as a day on which we will lift prayers in a 24-hour vigil.
To help with our prayers, Rev. Mark Wiley (pastor in Claremont) wrote this prayer, inspired by our Conference theme (from Matthew 28:19-20[Matthew 28:19 Therefore, go and make people from all nations into talmidim, immersing them into the reality of the Father, the Son and the Ruach HaKodesh, 20 and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember! I will be with you always, yes, even until the end of the age.”]). I invite you to pray it with me:
And Jesus says, "Go therefore."
Get out.
Get out of here.
Get out of your comfort zone.
It's not about you.
The gospel isn't for us.
We already know it.
We already have heard the call. We are already blessed.
We are already part of the family.
The gospel is for the world.
Our mission is to save the nations, and to heal the planet.
Go therefore.
Change your pew.
Speak kind words.
Pay it forward.
Kill a mosquito.
Hug an enemy.
Speak up against injustice. Do no harm.
Do as much good as we can. Stay in love with God.
Amen. [Pastor Molly Vetter]
I will be away this Sunday, on vacation. I am thrilled that Rev. Nicole Reilley will be here to preach again this week, and know you'll welcome and learn from her.

In Worship This Week
Sunday, May 1
Scripture: John 14:23-29
Scripture Text:
John 14:23 Yeshua answered him, “If someone loves me, he will keep my word; and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24 Someone who doesn’t love me doesn’t keep my words — and the word you are hearing is not my own but that of the Father who sent me.
25 “I have told you these things while I am still with you. 26 But the Counselor, the Ruach HaKodesh, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything; that is, he will remind you of everything I have said to you.
27 “What I am leaving with you is shalom — I am giving you my shalom. I don’t give the way the world gives. Don’t let yourselves be upset or frightened. 28 You heard me tell you, ‘I am leaving, and I will come back to you.’ If you loved me, you would have been glad that I am going to the Father; because the Father is greater than I.
29 “Also, I have said it to you now, before it happens; so that when it does happen, you will trust.
John Wesley's Notes-Commentary for: John 14:23-29
Verse 23
[23] Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.
Jesus answered — Because ye love and obey me, and they do not, therefore I will reveal myself to you, and not to them.
My Father will love him — The more any man loves and obeys, the more God will love him.
And we will come to him, and make our abode with him — Which implies such a large manifestation of the Divine presence and love, that the former in justification is as nothing in comparison of it.
Verse 26
[26] But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
In my name — For my sake, in my room, and as my agent.
He will teach you all things — Necessary for you to know. Here is a clear promise to the apostles, and their successors in the faith, that the Holy Ghost will teach them all that truth which is needful for their salvation.
Verse 27
[27] Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
Peace I leave with you — Peace in general; peace with God and with your own consciences.
My peace — In particular; that peace which I enjoy, and which I create, I give - At this instant.
Not as the world giveth — Unsatisfying unsettled, transient; but filling the soul with constant, even tranquillity. Lord, evermore give us this peace! How serenely may we pass through the most turbulent scenes of life, when all is quiet and harmonious within! Thou hast made peace through the blood of thy cross. May we give all diligence to preserve the inestimable gift inviolate, till it issue in everlasting peace!
Verse 28
[28] Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.
God the Father is greater than I — As he was man. As God, neither is greater nor less than the other.
Verse 29
[29] And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe.
I have told you — Of my going and return.

10:30am in the Sanctuary
Special Music: "Daystar" by Steve Richardson;
Lily of the Valley,
Let Your sweet aroma fill my life.
Rose of Sharon, show me
How to grow in beauty in God's sight.
Fairest of ten thousand,
Make me a reflection of Your light.
Daystar, shine down on me,
Let Your love shine through me in the night.
Lead me, Lord, I'll follow
Anywhere You open up the door.
Let Your Word speak to me;
Show me what I've never seen before.
Lord, I want to be a witness
You can take what's wrong and make it right.
Daystar, shine down on me,
Let Your love shine through me in the night.
Lord, I see a world that's dying,
Wounded by the master of deceit,
Groping in the darkness,
Haunted by the years of past defeat;
But then I see You standing near me, Lord,
Shining with compassion in Your eyes.
Daystar, shine down on me,
Let Your love shine through me in the night.
Lead me, Lord, I'll follow
Anywhere You open up the door.
Let Your Word speak to me;
Show me things I've never seen before.
Lord, I want to be a witness
Only You can take what's wrong and make it right.
Daystar, shine down on me,
Let Your love shine through me in the night.
Jesus, shine down on me,
Let Your love shine through me in the night.
"Come to the River" by Ronnie Freeman
Chris Gambol, guest soloist
Come to the river
Play in the water
And drink on forever
And be free
There's rest for the weary
And relief for the hurried
So come to the river
And be healed
How beautiful, the water's blue
As you let them rush over you
Say goodbye to everything
That silence the songs you love to sing
In the river, come to the river
The river of peace
Come to this river
And join in the laughter
And dream of whatever, whatever makes you smile
Won't you come and stay a while?
How beautiful, the water's blue
As you let them rush over you
Say goodbye to everything
That silence the songs you love to sing
In the river, come to the river
How beautiful, the water's blue
As you let them rush over you
Say goodbye to everything
That silence the songs you love to sing
In the river, come to the river
The river of peace

As I was reading last Sunday's printed Order of Worship I observed a typo in the notice about our coming Sunday, May 1st Pot Luck following the 10:30 AM service. My good friend Ernie (before this) headlined the fact that we were having “POTLUCK LUNCHE (sic) NEXT SUNDAY: MAY 1”. Now, I admire every one of the many things Ernie does for our church (and me) 52 weeks a year in his position as Administration Assistant, and he has corrected more of my articles than anyone knows, but when a typo makes me laugh out loud, I have to report it. Plan on attending this Sunday.
Do you know the top ten reasons for attending the Pot-Luck luncheons? Well, I won't list them here, but the important number one reason is that “No one brings food items that are not the very best recipe, the very best tasting or the very best available to purchase for our choice in eating”. If you want good food, attend the potluck.
By the way, wasn't Rev. Nicole Reilley's sermon last week outstanding? Well, the good news is that she'll do it again today on the subject “Life Before Death” and that is something everyone one of us can do something about, so come, bring a guest and learn. (Me? I'll be out of town in San Diego for a few days.)
To any of you reading this, our Men's Breakfast is tomorrow, Monday, May 2nd at 7:00 AM at Coco's Restaurant on Hawthorne Blvd. Near 182nd Street in Torrance. Even women sometimes come, ostensibly to see what goes on, or to recruit workers for the Rummage Sales. At any rate you are invited and welcome at any of our first and third Mondays all year long. Hope to see you there.

(Some of you have asked: They do have an online gift registry!)

We invite you to join your church family for a potluck after 10:30 worship. Bring a dish to share - enjoy the fellowship!

The children will sing in 10:30 worship on Sunday, May 8 (with a before-worship rehearsal that day, at 10am). Learn the song online!
A Mother's Day Gift from Church
Like last year, instead of giving flowers to mothers at church on Mother's Day this year, we are making a gift to support mothers in need around the world. This year, we will make a gift to Imagine No Malaria, in honor of all our mothers (and those who mother us).
You are invited to make an extra gift to INM, too, in honor of mothers--just mark your gift "Mother's Day."
Through education, bed nets & more, $10 is able to make a difference and save a life.

Our United Methodist campaign to eradicate malaria has reached 90% of our goal--but there's still a ways to go! Our congregation has raised $18,400 toward our $20,000 goal. We are asked to submit our donations by May, but gifts are still welcome after that.

Book Club: Our next book (non-fiction) is "Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption" by Bryan Stephenson. Just Mercy is at once an unforgettable account of an idealistic, gifted young lawyer’s coming of age, a moving window into the lives of those he has defended, and an inspiring argument for compassion in the pursuit of true justice. This book is on the UMW reading list.
Join us Thursday, June 2nd, 7:00 PM
More info online; email Ann or Laura.

Vacation Bible School 2016: August 1-5

Baja Trip 2016: July 16-23
Youth and others from the church can sign up now to be a part of Baja Mission 2016, as we return to Mexico for another week this summer.
Now is the time to think about whether you can join us this summer--the trip will be July 16-23, and is open to people of all ages.

On Pentecost Sunday, May 15, we are pleased to welcome Rev. Winfred Ritter back to our pulpit. Rev. Ritter served as our Senior Pastor from 1984-1992; he is currently retired and lives in the San Diego area. It was during Rev. Ritter's time at the church that we laid the groundwork for starting Shared Bread; he inspired and faithfully led the congregation. He will preach and lead worship in both of our morning services on Pentecost, a special day of celebration (and the Holy Spirit!) for our congregation.
