"Developing Leaders" by Stan Toler
"Eliminating Anger from Your Leadership"
4 Signs You're an Angry Leader, and 4 Ways to Change
Anger is the secret weapon some leaders use to fuel themselves and motivate others. And it works-to a degree. Like a shot of nitrous oxide in the carburetor, anger can supercharge your energy, intimidate your rivals, and put the fear of humiliation or failure into your team members.
All you need is an opposer to get you fired up-such as a tough competitor or a poorly performing team member-and you can take off on a rant that will put the fear of the Almighty into everyone in your organization.
That may work in the short term. But like any dangerous drug, anger has many negative side effects. It alienates people, breeds discouragement, and leads to cynicism and hostility in the workplace.
  • Are you tempted to use anger as a motivator?
  • Do you work with more intensity when you're upset?
  • Do you bottle up frustration about team performance until it explodes?
  • Do you like it when people get a little nervous when the boss shows up?
  • Do your team meetings include more criticism and negative examples than praise and positive highlights?
If so, you may be relying too much on anger and intimidation in your leadership style. Here's a few tips to move past this approach:
Resolve Issues Quickly. The Bible urges, "Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry,"(Ephesians 4:26), and that's brilliant advice. When you encounter problems with your team, address them immediately and gently. Don't allow yourself to brood on matters until they become toxic.
Give Others the Benefit of the Doubt.
Most competing organizations are not cheating. Tough opponents are not out to destroy you personally. Most of your employees are working hard and trying to make a difference. Assume a good motive in everyone until they prove you wrong. It will transform your approach to personnel and problem management.
Don't Take Push Back Personally. When people reject your ideas, they're not rejecting you. The team member who spots a problem in your strategy is actually doing you a favor. He or she wants the plan to succeed as much as you do; the criticism isn't always aimed at you. Learn to welcome the rigorous inspection of your ideas, and remember that under-performing team members are not letting you down-they're cheating themselves.
Find a Way to De-Stress
Leadership is stressful. It places demands on you that others in the organization do not understand, and it brings unique frustrations. Left unchecked, stress can boil into a generalized anger that will affect every relationship in your life.
Relax. Learn to blow off some steam in healthy ways, such as exercise, hobbies, and family activities. Release the safety valve occasionally, and you'll keep anger from polluting your leadership style.[Stan Toler]

Asia-Pacific
This week we look at how a church in the Netherlands has chosen bigger impact over a bigger building. God is honoring that choice and they are reaching their communities. You will also see how one passionate youth pastor turned his passion for soccer into an incredible outreach ministry in Honduras. The success was so great that churches across Honduras are looking at how they can use Soccer Ministry to impact their communities. And finally the NYC in the Philippines and Micronesia gathered in April with the highlight being a community emersion experience where they went out into the hospitals and provincial jails and shared the gospel.

Dr. Jerry Porter - Board of General Superintendents

After hospitalization for severe anemia and atrial fibrillation (irregular heart rate), Dr. Jerry Porter has reflected deeply on what if? What if he only had 24 hours to live? How would this change his perspective on ministry, life, relationships?
See this insightful article on how reflecting on our mortality can truly change our perspective on life and ministry.

24 HOURS TO LIVE – BY DR. JERRY PORTER
Dr. Jerry D Porter
Earlier this year I was hospitalized because of anemia brought on by medications that gave me stomach ulcers. I also suffered from a rapid heart rate (atrial fibrillation – AFIB). Recently when I was preparing a message for a funeral celebration, I was captured by two questions: What if I only had 24 hours to live? What if the Lord was coming back today?
As I ask myself those probing questions, my attitudes and actions are changing!
When someone is rude or irritating, I turn the other cheek and pray for him or her … knowing that I might be standing before the Lord tomorrow!
When I think I am too busy to pray or study God’s Word, I affirm my total dependence on God, and I remember that an intimate conversation with Jesus is my number one priority.
When I have opportunity to be with my wife or family, I jump at the chance to spend quality time with my “inner circle” people.
When I walk through the airport, my heart is moved to compassion for each person, and I pray for these strangers. I am also not so quick to push to the front of the line to board the plane!
When temptation comes my way, the enemy’s sly deceit loses its luster in light of the realization that I could soon be standing before my Lord for my final accounting.
When I am with a pre-Christian friend, I feel the urgent need to share a word of hope in Christ with him or her, even at the risk of being embarrassed or rejected.
When I am with a hurting person, I immediately take a few minutes to pray for that one rather than simply promising to pray.
“I am discovering that my life priority is my relationship with God, my family, and my neighbors. “[Dr. Jerry Porter, GS]
This simple question is changing me to live in the reality of maranatha: “Our Lord is coming soon.” I am discovering that my life priority is my relationship with God, my family, and my neighbors.
“Make it clear … to all you meet that you’re on their side … Help them see that the Master is about to arrive. He could show up any minute”(Philippians 4:5, MSG).
“‘Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.’ Be very careful, then, how you live — not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil”(Ephesians 5:14–16, NIV).
What if I knew that I only had 24 hours to live?
“Be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near”(James 5:8,NIV).
“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom”(Psalms 90:12, NIV) and live a no-regrets life, to the glory of God![Download 24 Hours to Live - By Dr. Jerry Porter as PDF]

Southeast Asia

We often saw her as we turned into the alley that led to the boys home. The pastor had built his home here, in a squatter community. Her house was at the end of the alley and there she sat through the day, grumbling, spitting, cursing at anyone who would talk to or even look at her.
She was an angry and much forgotten woman, living in a run down shack no more then 2 meters by 2 meters in floor space, with a roof that was caving in. Now the rainy season was upon her.

NO ONE EVER CARED FOR ME UNTIL THAT YOUNG FATHER CAME…
Southeast Asia: We often saw her as we turned into the alley that led to the boys home.
That young pastor went to see his mentor/mother, who was also a pastor.
“We have to do something for her,” He said.
The band of local Christians gathered the equivalent of two-hundred US dollars. It would have to be enough.
The youth group of that local church plant used the materials that this could purchase to fix her roof and fix up her home. It didn’t take too much time for their good deed to be carried out and not long after, the woman came to the young pastor’s house…
The pastor’s mother was there that day and met her.
“No one ever cared for me until that young father came.”
The woman said, “No one ever cared for me until that young father came.” It seemed she assumed he must be a priest!
It was by chance that I heard the story about what our people had done for this one on the margins of society. Although I see the kids weekly and there are many opportunities to boast it is not their habit.
The story above also explains why more recently, when we turn up the alley to visit our young pastor we see her, the previously bitter old woman, sitting in front of her home… she waves big, smiles broad and points at the sky nodding.[Download No One Ever Cared For Me Until that Young Father Came... as PDF]
