Weekly eNote from Senior Pastor Adam Hamilton from The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, Kansas, United States for Friday, 10 June 2016
Dear Resurrection Family,
As you read this I am speaking at the auditorium at Grove City College in Grove City, Pennsylvania to 1,600 pastors and church leaders from the Western Pennsylvania Annual Conference. Would you pause right now and pray that God will use me to inspire, encourage and equip the pastors and lay leaders here? I’d be grateful for your prayers for me and for them. I finish speaking tomorrow morning and will be back in Kansas City Saturday night. I’m looking forward to being in worship, as a worshiper, Sunday morning and being back in the office this week.
In worship this weekend, Pastor Scott will conclude the sermon series “Unsettled” at Leawood and Downtown, Pastor Jason will conclude “Adventure” at Resurrection West, and Mark Maschgerwill conclude her series, “Livin’ in the Mess” at Blue Springs. As always, in addition to great messages we’ll have inspiring music that speaks to your soul. I hope you will be in worship every weekend that you’re in town this summer, and when you’re out of town, that you will join us online on Sundays at 10:45 am and 5 pm or at various times during the week.
More than 1,000 children will fill the Leawood campus this coming week for Vacation Bible Camp. It’s going to be a blast as the VBC theme this year is “Meet the Royals.” Picking up on Royals fever, the kids will study the various kings and queens of the Bible with music, dramas, crafts and games. I’m told that the KC Royals mascot Slugger might even show up for the fun! The week will culminate with our family night Royals game – I’m looking forward to being at the game with my own kids and granddaughter next Friday night along with 1,200 of you!
On June 17 we begin our annual Bless the School project, this year at Garfield Elementary. This is a new school partnership for us, and an important one. Garfield is a Kansas City, MO neighborhood school that serves over 500 students (K-6th grade) in the northeast community. It serves a very diverse population made up of students from over 15 countries representing a wide variety of cultures. Bless the School will restore and refresh the classrooms, grounds and common areas (auditorium, art room, gymnasium, office, library, etc.) and we will construct a new playground for the school. We’ll need 650-700 volunteers between June 17 and 24 to complete the projects at Garfield. Could you serve for a part of a day? Or a full day? We have morning, afternoon and evening shifts. LaVon and I will serve one evening that week. Do you have a small group, neighbors or co-workers you could invite to join you? This is a fun way to do something that truly will bless these students and teachers. You can register for a shift online at cor.org/blesstheschool.
Another way you can bless low-income students is through our annual school supply and uniform drive next month. With growth and redistricting, enrollment in our five partner schools in KCMO and KCK will increase 30% (or 500+ students) in the 2016-17 school year. Meeting the commitment we have with our existing schools will require greater effort and generosity. I think we’re up for the challenge! Watch for donation details in July. I’m hoping each of you will join LaVon and me in providing school supplies and/or a uniform for a child in one of these schools.
Each summer we have a number of mission teams go out from Resurrection to minister, serve and learn in other parts of the country and around the world. These include youth, choir, adult and family mission trips. One of our family mission teams was in New York City this week serving and learning and having a great time together. This week we also had an adult mission team in Honduras. They are the sixth international mission team from Resurrection so far this year. You can follow our international teams on the global impact blog. Take a look at the international trip rosters at the end of this eNote and if you know any of these folks, ask them to share their experience. I hope that each member of our congregation will consider going on a mission trip either in the US or internationally. It truly is a life-changing experience.
On June 18/19 I’ll kick off a two-week series we’re calling “The Gospel According to Dogs: Spiritual Lessons from our Four-Legged Friends.” This is going to be a light-hearted series with profound spiritual truths. This is a great series to invite your dog loving friends to. We’ll kick off the series on Father’s Day weekend, plan to bring your dad – or your kids and grandkids!
Speaking of Father’s Day, if you send us your favorite “Dad” photos, we’ll share them Father’s Day weekend. Just email your photo to fathersday@cor.org. Make sure you include which campus you attend and the service time you will be attending on Father’s Day. We need your photos by 8 am on Wednesday, June 15.
I look forward to being back in KC tomorrow, back in the office this coming week and back in the pulpit on Father’s Day weekend!
Adam
