issue coverThe Upper Room Daily Devotional from Nashville, Tennessee, United States “BRINGING THE GIANTS DOWN” for Tuesday, 26 July 2016 with Scripture: 1 Samuel 17:31 David’s words were overheard and told to Sha’ul, who summoned him. 32 David said to Sha’ul, “No one should lose heart because of him; your servant will go and fight this P’lishti.” 33 Sha’ul said to David, “You can’t go to fight this P’lishti — you’re just a boy, and he has been a warrior from his youth!” 34 David answered Sha’ul, “Your servant used to guard his father’s sheep. When a lion or a bear would come and grab a lamb from the flock, 35 I would go after it, hit it, and snatch the lamb from its mouth; and if it turned on me, I would catch it by the jaw, smack it and kill it. 36 Your servant has defeated both lions and bears, and this uncircumcised P’lishti will be like one of them, because he has challenged the armies of the living God.” 37 Then David said, “Adonai, who rescued me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, will rescue me from the paw of this P’lishti!” Sha’ul said to David, “Go; may Adonai be with you.”
-------
David said, “The LORD, who saved me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, will save me from the hand of this Philistine.”[1 Samuel 17:37 (NRSV)]
David was a young boy whose job was to protect his flock of sheep from predators. He wasn’t a mighty warrior. But what he lacked in size he made up in faith. Now he was ready to face the biggest challenge of his life so far — a giant. David didn’t cower in Goliath’s presence; he was ready to fight him face-to-face with only a slingshot and a few smooth stones. He didn’t need anything else because God was there in the fight with him.
We all face challenges. Some are small, and we easily work through them. Others become more difficult and seemingly life-altering. But we can stand firm and face them because God is with us.
No matter what giants we face — unemployment, health issues, loss of a loved one — we can take our focus off the overwhelming situation and turn it to God. Then we may overcome the obstacle in an unexpected way. God helped David defeat Goliath with a few smooth stones, and God can show us how to overcome our situations and be victorious.

I have been a daily devotional reader for decades, but it was only a few years ago that I started writing my own, when a family member was diagnosed with cancer. I wanted to do something special and decided to send her daily inspirational thoughts with a short joke at the end to bring lightness to a serious situation.
Soon after, I found other instances of friends who needed assurance and guidance for what was happening in their life. In each case I would send them a devotional to help heal their hurting heart and spirit. Family and friends appreciated what I had to say and told me how my words had touched them.
Through my writing group, I was encouraged to seek publication for my inspirational ideas. I began writing and submitting monthly. Though my submissions weren’t always accepted, I still kept submitting. My daily devotionals have now been included in multiple magazines, guides, and even an anthology.
I’ve often been asked where I come up with the ideas. My answer is always the same: it’s all part of God working in my life. I’ll see or hear something and think, “God is so amazing.” That inspires me to write down my thoughts and how they tie in with God’s words in the Bible.
I’ll still keep writing devotionals for publications, but I’ve also began putting together a new group of devotionals for my own book to help people going through a crisis.
