South America youth learn, serve at ALTITUD
Portuguese - Español
Nearly 1,500 youth from across the South America Region came together October 12 through 16 at ALTITUD, the region's quadrennial Nazarene Youth International conference. Campinas Central Church of the Nazarene in Brazil hosted the conference, where students deepened their relationship with God and carried out evangelistic activities in the community.
During these four days, national and global Church of the Nazarene leaders ministered to young people in services based on an acrostic of the Spanish word ALTITUD (amor–love, libertad–freedom, transformación–transformation, integridad–integrity, testimonio–testimony, unidad–unity, and dependencia–dependence).

The event also included ministerial workshops where youth could choose their areas of interest to receive direction and develop their gifts and talents in their respective churches and countries.
#ALTITUD16 made many moments of integration possible between young South Americans, including a Copa America soccer tournament.
On the last day, attendees participated in evangelistic outreach lead by Maximum Mission. The students were sent to 14 points throughout the city to conduct recreational activities, sports, dances, and musical and theatrical performances to announce the love of Jesus, reaching 2,700 people.

A high point of the conference occurred on the last day when, soon after Communion was served, all present spontaneously raised their hands in prayer for a group of Venezuelans and prayed for a new time in that country. Though they represented many languages and cultures, the group united as one in prayer that God would heal Venezuela.
The conference opened with more than 2,600 present and closed with 3,000. To see more photos and details from #ALTITUD16, visit the JNI SAM Facebook page.[Church of the Nazarene South America Region]

MNU announces largest capital campaign
MidAmerica Nazarene University announced its most comprehensive capital campaign at the university’s 50th Anniversary Grand Celebration Dinner. "Bright Futures: the campaign for MNU" is a three-priority, multi-year campaign for $61 million.
Over the next five years, funds raised in the campaign will be designated for three priorities at MNU:
  1. Academic Programs: $6,989,043
  2. Capital Projects: $28,109,262
  3. University Support: $26,214,328
Among the most visible aspects of the campaign will be the construction of the new, state-of-the-art, 50,000-square-foot Cunningham Student Center replacing the nearly 50-year-old Campus Center building. The center will feature multi-use spaces for meeting, a larger, enhanced dining area, outdoor areas, a fitness center and the campus store, and will more than double the space of the current building. The second floor will house Enrollment Development, Student Financial Aid Services, and Student Development with space specifically designed for visiting prospective students and their families.
Other capital projects include a new athletic complex, stadium, and track. Due to lack of facilities, football and track & field have been moved off campus for “home” competitions to the Olathe District Activity Center. These new facilities will allow these teams to host activities on campus allowing for greater fan involvement. These significant building projects will greatly enhance the student experience at MNU.
"Fifty years after the start of this university, it is now our responsibility to take what our founders built to a new level of excellence,” said David Spittal, MNU president. “These capital projects are vital to MNU’s ability to appeal to, educate, and prepare students for generations to come.”
Investments in academic programs and resources, including the rapidly changing technology required to equip graduates for successful careers, will be made through the other two campaign priorities. Specifically, funding for the updated Learning Commons, the addition of career services and the expansion of academic support services has already been obtained through a five-year Title III Department of Education Strengthening Institutions Program (SIP) grant.
As the third priority, university support includes funding to bolster student scholarships and university operations. This will increase MNU’s ability to offer competitive financial aid packages for an increasing number of students. Funding for operations and maintenance will further increase the quality of the student experience for all.
“These projects are a great fit for the forward vision of MNU,” says Tim Buchanan, campaign co-chair. “They are key components to drawing more students so that we can continue fulfilling our mission to transform students’ lives.”

Mexico Field, Healing Waters International partner for clean water initiative
Para leer en español, haga clic aquí.
Mexico Field Nazarene Compassionate Ministries leaders and Healing Waters International announced a partnership at a joint training seminar for the Chiapas and Oaxaca Initiative, a strategy to implement water purification plants along with conducting health and hygiene talks and finance training.
Sebastian Ovando, Mexico HWI coordinator, said that the need for purified water is becoming more vital each day. Infant mortality figures indicate that the states of Chiapas and Oaxaca are where the highest rates of deaths occur annually, mainly caused by gastrointestinal diseases from consuming contaminated water.

Various Nazarene churches are in the process of starting this ministry on the South Pacific, South, South Border, Oaxaca, and Oaxaca Norponiente districts.
“We are confident that this initiative will be a great blessing to the communities where the Church of the Nazarene is located," said Edi Montejo, Mexico Field NCM coordinator. "We will see fruits of transformed lives in the name of Jesus and as a church we will help generate good hygiene. We were called to embody the needs of a world that cry out for the compassion of God’s people.”
Leaders also visited a water purification plant that began about 12 years ago at Las Granjas Church of the Nazarene.[Church of the Nazarene Mesoamerica Region]

Flags of the Nations: Ecuador
The red, green, and blue are the colors of South American revolutionist and adventurer Francisco de Miranda. Yellow is the color of the federation, red is said to indicate courage, and blue symbolizes independence from Spain. The centered coat of arms is topped with a condor.
Since September 1, 2009, the Church of the Nazarene's Global Ministry Center (GMC) proudly flies a flag each week of one of the many nations in which the denomination is present in ministry. Leaders were invited to send a national flag to be flown at the GMC alongside the flag of the United States*. The national flags rotate weekly, and photos of them raised are sent to the church leaders of that country.
This week: Ecuador
The Church of the Nazarene officially entered Ecuador in 1972.
Ecuador had a population of 15,868,396 in 2015. That same year, Ecuador reported 237 Churches of the Nazarene, 192 of which have been officially organized. Ecuador has 16,766 total members.
Located on the South America Region, Ecuador has three Phase 3 districts, one Phase 2 district, and two Phase 1 districts. For more information about the South America Region, visit samnaz.org.
* = The weekly highlighted flag is raised on the middle of three poles in compliance with U.S. government protocols. It flies to the left of the GMC host-nation United States flag, which flies above the host-state flag of Kansas. The Christian flag flies on the third pole.
The Global Ministry Center is the mission and service hub of the Church of the Nazarene.

Massachusetts clergywoman to be honored for fighting domestic violence
Mansfield, Massachusetts
(The Sun Chronicle, October 26) In a world where families are no stranger to domestic violence, clergy members might not be as prepared as they think to deal with a sudden crisis.
The Rev. Jossie Owens, an ordained elder in the Church of the Nazarene, is a longtime supporter of Safe Havens, an interfaith partnership that seeks to tap the both pastoral and counseling disciplines to combat domestic violence and elder abuse, and aid their victims.
“We really need to educate ourselves about the cycle of violence,” said the 30-year-Mansfield resident, who teaches at Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy.

Registration, housing now open for General Assembly 2017
Excitement is growing as Nazarenes from around the world anticipate gathering for worship, fellowship, and business next summer in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA, at the 2017 General Assembly and Conventions. Housing and event registration is now open.
The General Assembly is the "supreme doctrine-formulating, lawmaking, and elective authority of the Church of the Nazarene" (Manual, 300). The General Assembly and auxiliary conventions (Nazarene Missions International, Nazarene Youth International, and Sunday School and Discipleship Ministries International) convene every four years, bringing together Nazarenes from around the globe.
The General Assembly Arrangements Office has established a housing block of approximately 3,400 rooms near the Indiana Convention Center. This number is based upon past attendance figures, expected popularity of the site, and the Arrangements Office’s best projections for attendance. All hotels are within walking distance of the Indiana Convention Center. Hotel prices range from US$124 to $170 per night plus tax (currently 17 percent per night).
By contracting hotel rooms, the Church of the Nazarene secures the convention center at no cost and is able to be good stewards of its resources. As with any contract, there is a legal obligation with financial penalties should we not meet the agreed terms. Delegates and visitors are encouraged to stay within the housing block to ensure these obligations are met and that the church does not incur penalties.
Visitors (non-delegates) from the USA and Canada can register now for General Assembly 2017 and make hotel reservations. Registration is available at nazarene.org/ga The event will begin June 21 and run through June 30.
Visitors from outside the USA and Canada may register and make reservations through their regional general assembly coordinator. They may contact their regional office for details.
To register as a USA/Canada visitor, check hotel availability, and make a reservation, please click here or visit the General Assembly and Conventions website at nazarene.org/ga.
