From Pastor Molly: A Reason to GiveI've never forgotten the conversation I shared in a Bible study at the Rescue Mission Women's Shelter in San Diego. There, with women who had been homeless, we read the story of the Widow's Mite. In this passage, Jesus celebrates the outrageous generosity of a poor woman who had contributed two small copper coins. More than the bigger gifts others had given, he praises her small gift: she gave all she had.
Honestly, I have struggled with the message in this passage--wondering whether it is really practical or responsible to give all of what we have. But when I read it that particular morning at the Rescue Mission, several of the women testified that they had found it much easier to give away their last $20 than to give $20 when they had more.
When it's all you have, and you know that it's not enough, there's no illusion that you can make it on your own. Giving it away is a strangely empowering way to say that, even in a time of need, you choose to use what you have for more than just yourself.
This goes against many of the values I was raised with, which celebrate being able to take care of yourself. As we talked, though, I heard something that I'd missed when I read this Bible story from my assumptions about the value of pulling my own weight: we're not in it alone.
So, one reason that we give is because it reminds us that we were never asked to survive on our own. We have already received a gift of God's grace that we could never earn.
As you consider whether you are able to make a pledge of financial giving to the church for 2017, I invite you to think about how you can use what you have for the sake of God's amazing grace. May you find you've received far more than you could ever quantify!
Grace and peace,
Pastor Molly Vetter

Judges 4:12-16
Scripture Text: Judges 4:12 Sisra was informed that Barak the son of Avino‘am had gone up to Mount Tavor. 13 So Sisra rallied his chariots, all 900 iron chariots, and all the troops he had with him, from Haroshet-HaGoyim to the Kishon River.
14 D’vorah said to Barak: “Get going! This is the day when Adonai will hand Sisra over to you! Adonai has gone out ahead of you!” So Barak went down from Mount Tavor with 10,000 men following him; 15 and Adonai threw Sisra, all his chariots and his entire army into a panic before Barak’s sword; so that Sisra got down from his chariot and fled on foot. 16 But Barak pursued the chariots and the army all the way to Haroshet-HaGoyim. Sisra’s entire army was put to the sword; not one man was left.
"Unexpected Heroes"
John Wesley's Notes-Commentary: Judges 4:12-16
Verse 12
[12] And they shewed Sisera that Barak the son of Abinoam was gone up to mount Tabor.
They — That is, this people dwelling there, or his spies.
Verse 14
[14] And Deborah said unto Barak, Up; for this is the day in which the LORD hath delivered Sisera into thine hand: is not the LORD gone out before thee? So Barak went down from mount Tabor, and ten thousand men after him.
Up — Heb. arise, delay not. If we have ground to believe, that God goes before us, we may well go on with courage and cheerfulness.
Gone before thee — Namely, as general of thine army, to fight for thee.
Went down — He doth not make use of the advantage which he had of the hill, where he might have been out of the reach of his iron chariots, but boldly marcheth down into the valley, to give Sisera the opportunity of using all his horses and chariots, that so the victory might he more glorious.
Verse 15
[15] And the LORD discomfited Sisera, and all his chariots, and all his host, with the edge of the sword before Barak; so that Sisera lighted down off his chariot, and fled away on his feet.
Discomfited — With great terror and noise, as the word signifies, probably with thunder and lightning, and hail-stones, poured upon them from heaven, as is implied, chap. 5:20.
Edge of the sword — That is, by the sword of Barak and his army, whose ministry God used; but so, that they had little else to do, but to kill those whom God by more powerful arms had put to flight.
On his feet — That he might flee away more secretly in the quality of a common soldier, whereas his chariot would have exposed him to more observation.
Verse 16
[16] But Barak pursued after the chariots, and after the host, unto Harosheth of the Gentiles: and all the host of Sisera fell upon the edge of the sword; and there was not a man left.
Left — In the field; for there were some who fled away, as Sisera did.

Incidentally, the beautiful color copy of Karen Baughman's water color of our church building always reminds me of her talent as an artist. It's a beautiful rendering of our church here in Redondo Beach. It makes me want to actually move the real tree a bit.
Reminder: Friday, November 4th at 8:15 PM the Beach Cities Symphony Orchestra dedicates its free symphony concert in Memory of Mary Emerson whose estate made a bequest at her request. It takes place at El Camino College's Marsee Auditorium, Crenshaw & Redondo Beach Blvd., Torrance.
I plan to be in the foyer to greet you and then to play French Horn in the orchestra. Following the concert I will be at the special reception for members, friends, musicians and the soloist.
I wish to compliment Pastor Molly for her fall theme and sermons called "Better Together". If you haven't got in the mood of that theme yet, just let it happen and you'll feel better.
One of the benefits of 'Better Together' is at the Thursday and Sunday School Bible Study groups where one gets to hear others talking about their faith and learning about each other a bit. You'll never be sorry if you attend one of these studies. Small groups are also "Better Together".

Coming at Church
Better Together: an invitation to giving
We invite you to consider making a pledge of financial support to our church for 2017. When you make a pledge of giving to the church, at least two things happen. It helps put your faith at the center of your financial decisions, because giving to the church is something you plan from the beginning. (Scripture speaks of this as “first fruits”—that we give to God first, not just what’s left over.) It also helps us as a congregation, to make more strategic plans for ministry for the coming year. We hope you will give prayerful thought to whether this is a step you are willing to take.
On Sunday November 6, we will dedicate our pledges during worship. We encourage you to come ready to make a commitment then!-Your 2016 Stewardship Team: Gary Baughman, Deirdre Briese, Grace and Jon Saari, Holly Walters, Stephen Hale and Pastor Molly Vetter
You can read more about our church budget, and also submit a pledge online, here.

Responding to the World's Needs
Redondo Beach First supports various missions throughout the year and we have come up a way for all of us to help. Just bring your plastic bottles and aluminum cans to church every Sunday. By recycling we can support the following missions: Corazon, Crop Walk, Habitat for Humanity and United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). UMCOR provides 100% of the funds donated for relief and aid around the world. Some of these programs are Syrian refugee relief, emergency response to Katrina and Haiti catastrophes. They also support programs to eradicate hunger, treat water, end malaria and fight HIV/AIDS. In 2014, UMCOR spent $58 million in support of these various programs. Please bring your cans and bottles.

A Mighty Fortress is our God (in the original German Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott) is one of the best known hymns written by reformer Martin Luther (who wrote many hymns). One of the best loved hymns of the Lutheran tradition, and among Protestants in general, it’s been called “The Battle Hymn of the Reformation”. Luther composed the lyrics and melody sometime between 1527 and 1529. A Mighty Fortress is our God (in the original German Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott) is one of the best known hymns written by reformer Martin Luther (who wrote many hymns). One of the best loved hymns of the Lutheran tradition, and among Protestants in general, it's been called "The Battle Hymn of the Reformation". Luther composed the lyrics and melody sometime between 1527 and 1529. There are several theories regarding the reason for its composition, and the original version of the melody (we have the manuscript with Luther's autograph on it) is heavily syncopated and is very different from the tune we all know and love. Over the years, it has been used extensively, from Bach's cantata #80 and Christmas Oratorio, organ settings by Buxtehude and Pachelbel, and Mendelssohn's Symphony #5 to Wagner's Kaisermarsch (Emperor's March) and the grand opera Les Huguenots by French composer Meyerbeer. More recently, it's been used by Ralph Vaughn Williams for the soundtrack to the movie 49th Parallel, in an episode of The Simpsons (Brother, Can You Spare Two Dimes), as the theme song for the children's television series Davey and Goliath and in an episode of The Gilmore Girls. The translation in our hymnal was translated in 1853 by Fredrick H. Hedge and is less literal, but is the most familiar version in this part of the world.
This week's anthem is a setting of Psalm 135 by Tchaikovsky. It is #8 in his All Night Vigil, Opus 52, written between 1881 and 1882. He had stated years before his disapproval of the increasingly Italian influence in Russian sacred music and had called for a return to the Old Russian style. After his setting of the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom was banned by the powers that be from being performed in church, he nevertheless began work on his All Night Vigil, having told a friend in an 1877 letter that he loved the vespers – "all this is infinitely precious to me! One of my deepest joys!" He drew upon a huge body of traditional Slavonic chants for the work. It was completed in Naples in March of 1882 and was debuted in Moscow in June of that year.
Wind Beneath My Wings (sometimes titled Hero) was written by Jeff Silbar and Larry Henley in 1982. They recorded a demo of the song, which they gave to Bob Montgomery, who recorded his own version. It was shopped to several artists, eventually being released in 1982 by Roger Whittaker. It was subsequently recorded by Colleen Hewett, Lou Rawls, Gladys Knight and the Pips, and Gary Morris. The version we all know and love is the version recorded by Bette Midler in 1988 for the soundtrack to the movie Beaches, which was then released as a single in early 1989. It spent 1 week at #1 on the Billboard Hot Singles chart in June of that year, and went on to win Grammy Awards for both Record of the Year and Song of the Year in 1990. In 1991, Bette's version was certified Platinum, selling over one million copies.
One Thing Remains is a song that was written in 2010 by Brian Johnson, Jeremy Riddle and Christa Black Gifford. It was recorded and released as part of the live album Come Away, which was recorded at the 2010 Jesus Culture Encounter Conference. The Jesus Culture Conference began as part of the youth group of Bethel Church in Redding, California, with the first conference being held in 1999 and attracting 500 attendees. Since then, it has grown into a musical force for worship with a full time staff of dozens and a discography that numbers 33 albums. It recently expanded to Sacramento, where they meet at Folsom High School. One Thing Remains has been covered by numerous artists, including Kristian Stanfill, Israel Houghton and Chris Tomlin.
