From Pastor Molly: In This Place
This Sunday, we'll celebrate World Communion Sunday; during 10:30 worship, we will use music and worship language from Hawai'i to worship God in Redondo Beach. There are two things I hope this will help us remember:
-That the church is bigger than our congregation or the culture we are most familiar with. When we gather at the communion table, it is Christ's table, and it extends to people all around the world, so gather to experience the same life-changing grace. We have our own particular traditions and songs, but they are not the only faithful ways to worship God: God is bigger than them all. Sometimes, the words and ways people worship help us see things in a new light, and understand God more deeply.
-And, that our worship should help connect us to our own place. God's love, especially as it comes through Jesus Christ, is meant to help us understand God's deep love for this world and its people, including all the specific places where we live. Never in the history of the earth has it been more important of us to stand up to take care of God's creation. As Ched Myers wrote in a recently article about "Watershed Discipleship," "Only love for specific places – what native Hawai'ians call aloha ‘aina – can motivate us to struggle on their behalf." We are invited to let God's love for our world focus our own love for this place. We are connected together with others and other creatures in our own region, and we are invited to love and care for this place.
The beauty of our beach community makes it easy to care about, but the invitation extends beyond the "beautiful" places, too; we are invited to see God's presence in places of beauty and joy, as well as in places of struggle and sorrow. In it all, Christ is present.
Grace and peace,[Pastor Molly Vetter]

World Communion Sunday
Daniel 3:19-30
"Not Alone"
Rev. Molly Vetter, preaching
Scripture Text:
Daniel 3:19 N’vukhadnetzar became so utterly enraged that his face was distorted with anger against Shadrakh, Meishakh and ‘Aved-N’go. He ordered the furnace made seven times hotter than usual. 20 Then he ordered some of the strongest men in his army to tie up Shadrakh, Meishakh and ‘Aved-N’go and throw them into the blazing hot furnace. 21 So these men were tied up in their cloaks, tunics, robes and other clothes, and thrown into the blazing hot furnace. 22 The king’s order was so urgent and the furnace so overheated that the men carrying Shadrakh, Meishakh and ‘Aved-N’go were burned to death by the flames. 23 These three men, Shadrakh, Meishakh and ‘Aved-N’go, fell, bound, into the blazing hot furnace.
24 Suddenly N’vukhadnetzar sprang to his feet. Alarmed, he asked his advisers, “Didn’t we throw three men, bound, into the flames?” They answered the king, “Yes, of course, your majesty.” 25 But he exclaimed, “Look! I see four men, not tied up, walking around there in the flames, unhurt; and the fourth looks like one of the gods!” 26 N’vukhadnetzar approached the opening of the blazing hot furnace and said, “Shadrakh! Meishakh! ‘Aved-N’go! You servants of El ‘Elyon! Come out, and come here!” Shadrakh, Meishakh and ‘Aved-N’go emerged from the flames. 27 The viceroys, prefects, governors and royal advisers who were there saw that the fire had had no power on the bodies of these men — not even their hair was singed, their clothes looked the same, and they didn’t smell of fire.
28 N’vukhadnetzar said, “Blessed be the God of Shadrakh, Meishakh and ‘Aved-N’go! He sent his angel to deliver his servants who trusted in him. They defied the royal order to the point of being willing to give up their bodies, in order not to serve or worship any god but their own God. 29 Therefore I herewith decree that anyone, no matter from which people, nation or language, who says anything to insult the God of Shadrakh, Meishakh and ‘Aved-N’go is to be torn limb from limb, and his house is to be reduced to rubble; because there is no other god who can save like this.”
30 Then the king gave Shadrakh, Meishakh and ‘Aved-N’go higher rank in the province of Bavel.
John Wesley's Notes Commentary for: Daniel 3:19-30
Verse 20
[20] And he commanded the most mighty men that were in his army to bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, and to cast them into the burning fiery furnace.
To bind — What did he think these three men would have refused? Or that their God would defend them from his power, or that if he had, his mighty men could have prevailed? None of all this was the case; for God purposed to shew his power when the king did his worst, and in the thing wherein he dealt proudly, to be above him.
Verse 23
[23] And these three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, fell down bound into the midst of the burning fiery furnace.
Fell down — All this is exprest with emphasis, to make the power of God more glorious in their preservation; for that shame that slew the executioners, might much more easily have killed them, even before they fell down.
Verse 25
[25] He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.
No hurt — See how the God of nature can when he pleases control the powers of nature! The Son of God - Probably he had heard David speak of him. Jesus Christ, the Angel of the covenant, did sometimes appear before his incarnation. Those who suffer for Christ, have his gracious presence with them in their sufferings, even in the fiery furnace, even in the valley of the shadow of death, and therefore need fear no evil.
Verse 26
[26] Then Nebuchadnezzar came near to the mouth of the burning fiery furnace, and spake, and said, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, ye servants of the most high God, come forth, and come hither. Then Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, came forth of the midst of the fire.
And spake — With a milder tone than before, God having abated the fire of his fury. Now he could at once acknowledge the true God to be the most high above all gods, and the three worthies to be his faithful servants.

If you happen to see any member of our church UMW (United Methodist Women) scurrying upstairs or into the Fellowship Hall this week, it's because the Rummage Sale is upon us. They have been working six months or more for this week-end Rummage Sale, Friday and Saturday, October 7th & 8th. If you don't visit the church Fellowship Hall, Epworth Lounge and May Day Parlor this coming week end, you'll not only miss seeing a lot of your church friends and staff, but you may miss out on a good sale for something and even more important, a great lunch Friday Noon, served by the UMW Naomi Circle in the Epworth Lounge (by the parking lot). They have been working hard and it all comes together at 9:00 AM Friday. Experienced Rummage shoppers arrive a bit early to get preferred access numbers and they are expert at locating bargain items. Most shop quickly and get out quickly. Later shoppers can plow through selections and take their time locating their specialties. There are many ways to find stuff , and lots of stuff you've never seen before, but the best items are the brand new clothes from some estate that fit and probably have never been worn, or perhaps just once. You be the judge. Hope to see you there Friday, October 7th all day.
The above hard working church women often get so tired at these Rummage Sales they say they may never work one again. However, they keep coming to work these activities twice a year, and the show goes on.
Many of us really appreciated Pastor Molly's substitute preacher, Rev. Nicole Reilley, who is actually a member of our church as well as contributor and supporter. Prior to Pastor Molly being assigned here, Rev. Nicole was part of a few interim Pastors, so she is well known here. Her sermon, titled "Better Together: Forgiveness & Reconciliation" used Bible verses Genesis 25:19-28 as read by Pat O'Blenes, and was well received last Sunday. We'll hear Rev. Nicole preach again this fall.
A beautiful photo of Pastor Molly Vetter was recently part of a national women's publication mentioning her recent participation in the Portland, Oregon United Methodists Bishops event last month. The photo caption failed to mention her being Senior Pastor at RBUMC.

Coming at Church
This Fall: Better Together
It's a church theme, a sermon series and more! All fall, we will be celebrating how we're Better Together, remembering how God works in the lives of communities and in our relationships. As the writer of Ecclesiastes said, "And though one might prevail against another, two will withstand one. A threefold cord is not quickly broken." (Ecclesiastes 4:12)
It goes much deeper, too--we come to know about God because of the people in whom we have seen God at work. Our faith and love make sense when we live them out with other people here on earth.
There's much more to say, and we hope you'll be a part of this whole meaningful season.

Hawaiian music has a sound and history that is completely unique, and only our prelude, Beyond The Reef, will come from the repertoire of popular music. Beyond the Reef was written in Hawai'i by Canadian composer Jack Pitman in 1948, and was first performed by Hawaiian artist Napua Stevens in 1949. It has since been covered by such artists as Bing Crosby, whose version peaked on the Billboard charts at #26 in 1950, Andy Williams, Vic Damone, Elvis Presley, Burl Ives, Marty Robbins and The Venturers.
The Queen's Prayer was composed by Queen Lili`uokalani, March 22, 1895, while she was under house arrest at Iolani Palace. This hymn was dedicated to Victoria Ka`iulani, heir apparent to the throne.
The Hawaiian hymn E Malama, Ho'omaika'i – The Lord Bless You and Keep You – was a collaboration. The Hawaiian lyrics were written by Annie Kalahele and the music was composed by Eliza K. Osorio.
Ekolu Mea Nui is based on I Cor 13:13 "And now abideth faith, hope and love, these three; but the greatest of these is love". This himeni (hymn) was composed for the Congregational church's hoʻike (an exhibition or public event) in Maui about 1925, by Robert Nawahine (1868-1951) an outstanding musician and leader of the central Maui churches.
Hawai'i Aloha is one of the most beloved songs written by Rev. Lorenzo Lyons, also known as Makua Laiana, was taken from an old hymn I Left It All With Jesus composed by James McGranahan (1840-1907). Rev. Lyons arrived as a missionary in Waimea, Hawai'i, July 16, 1832. He translated more than 900 hymns, became a citizen of Hawai'i and died in Waimea, Oct. 6, 1886. Today, residents of Hawai'i consider it to be the unofficial "national anthem" of Hawai'i, and when they gather for almost any reason – clubs, events, etc. – at the end of the gathering they stand, join hands, and sway from side to side as they sing this song.
Lot Kapuāiwa, King Kamehameha V, wanted a gift of music for his people and asked Kaiser Wilhelm I of Germany to send a bandmaster to Hawaiʻi. Henri Berger arrived June 5, 1872, and organized the Royal Hawaiian band who perfomed June 11,1872, after 5 days of practice. This first performance of the Royal Hawaiian band introduced Hymn to Kamehameha I which Berger re-wrote for the first celebration of King Kamehameha Day. The melody was based on the Prussian hymn originally titled Heil Dir Im Siegerkranz. The words by King David Kalākaua was set to the Hymn to Kamehameha I in 1874, and was first sung by the Kawaiahaʻo Church Choir, on King Kalākaua`s birthday, Nov. 16, 1874. Shortly thereafter, the King proclaimed it to be the National Anthem. The Hawaiʻi legislature proclaimed Hawaiʻi Ponoʻi the state anthem in 1967.
Aloha Oe, the song of farewell between two lovers is the most famous of Queen Lili'uokalani's compositions. Written in 1878. the tune of the verse resembles The Rock Beside the Sea, composed by Charles Crozat Converse and published in Philadephia, 1857. The melody of the chorus is remarkably close to the chorus of George Frederick Root's composition, There's Music In The Air, published in 1854. There is a manuscript of Aloha Oe in Queen Liliʻuokalani's handwriting in the Bishop Museum. Lahilahi Webb and Virginia Dominis Koch tell of a visit by the queen and her attendants to Maunawili Ranch, the home of Edwin Boyd on windward Oahu. As they started their return trip to Honolulu on horseback up the steep Pali trail, the queen turned to admire the view of Kaneohe Bay. She witnessed a particularly affectionate farewell between Colonel James Boyd of her party and a lovely young girl from Maunawili. As they rode up the steep cliff and into the swirling winds, she started to hum this melody weaving words into a romantic song. At the top of the pali, a cloud hung over the mountain peak and slowly floated down Nu`uanu Valley. The queen continued to hum and completed her song as they rode the winding trail down the valley back to Honolulu.
