Week Two: Disturbances
Reflection for the Week: Ask disturbing questions and consider unexpected ways we share the Gospel story. Wow! These are pretty powerful claims – a “Royal Priesthood?” I grew up being taught of Christian humility and service. I can remember having a baby sitter stay with us for a week or two at a time as my parents went on mission trips with the youth of the church. As a teenager, I remember doing paper drives, and recycle drives to raise money for the poor. I remember being picked up every Thursday from my high school to go to Pacoima and tutor kids who were struggling. I don’t remember ever being given a cape, a staff and a high hat like the Pope. So, what is the message for us?
It is a challenge. We are not to think highly of ourselves, but we are to think highly of what we do and who we represent. We must cherish the Christian witness as a sacred trust, a calling we are intended to respond to with our lives. This is a call to all Christians, not just the ordained ministers. To shy away from this call to faith and action is not humility; it is a lack of devotion.
This text from 1 Peter is not a complement to who we are. It is a challenge to whom we must become.
Prayer: Lord, let my faith in you be strong enough to respond to your call and work toward your kingdom. Amen.
