Scholarship for survivors of human trafficking is building hope in our community
The Beauty for Ashes Scholarship Fund grew out of the University's belief that a college education is one of the most important steps toward providing opportunities for survivors of human trafficking to heal and thrive.
This month, Channel 10 news reporter Kimberly Hunt featured the Beauty for Ashes Scholarship, interviewing Dr. Jamie Gates and aspiring PLNU student and survivor, Ebony Jones. The Fund supported five students this academic year, and we are working hard to grow it to sustain up to eight students who are pursuing their bachelor's degrees at PLNU.
Survivor Ebony Jones shares her story of pain and hope. Ebony is a community leader, advocating for more awareness of sex trafficking in our region and offering mentoring and hope to other women who are wanting to get out of "the life".CJR Intern Lauren Perez: Embracing the Complexity
Sophomore Lauren Perez is an intern at the CJR, and has focused on supporting HT-RADAR. The Human Trafficking Research and Data Roundtable was founded by Dr. Jamie Gates and is now funded through the County of San Diego and coordinated by Bernadette Winter-Villaluz, CJR Research Associate. Lauren is also helping mobilize students around fair trade.
Being an intern at the CJR has greatly impacted Lauren. She says, "the most important thing that I've learned is that all difficult issues, whether it be human trafficking, race relations, or border issues, just to name a few, are multi-dimensional and can be viewed from many differing perspectives. My knowledge of these social problems has grown considerably during my time with the CJR. I've realized that it is both my duty and my privilege to view these complex issues through a Christian lens, and engage them without hesitation."
After graduating from PLNU with a degree in Criminal Justice and a Spanish minor, Lauren hopes to attend law school, possibly focusing on immigration law. We are so thankful for Lauren!
