The God Pause from The Luther Seminary in Saint Paul, Minnesota, United States for Tuesday, 24 July 2018 - Psalm 145:10-18
Psalm 145:
10 All your creatures will thank you, Adonai,
and your faithful servants will bless you.
11 They will speak of the glory of your kingship,
and they will tell about your might;
12 to let everyone know of your mighty acts
and the glorious majesty of your kingship.
13 Your kingship is an everlasting kingship,
your reign continues through all generations.
14 Adonai supports all who fall
and lifts up all who are bent over.
15 The eyes of all are looking to you;
you give them their food at the right time.
16 You open your hand
and satisfy the desire of every living thing.
17 Adonai is righteous in all his ways,
full of grace in all he does.
18 Adonai is close to all who call on him,
to all who sincerely call on him.

Every night I tell my children I love them before they go to bed. Once my daughter asked me how she could trust that this really meant that I loved her. I explained that ultimately she simply had to believe that I did. I added that I hoped she knew by the way I treated her, fathered her, supported her, etc. that she would not have a hard time knowing that. She nodded and seemed to grasp that concept.
Our psalm today affirms the reality that God is indeed faithful, caring, empathetic and giving, yet does not give any reason why we should believe that. Yet, we do. We trust. We believe. We know. We know because this God we love and worship turns twenty loaves into enough for one hundred people. We know because this God we love and worship regularly hears our prayers and meets us where we are. We know because this God we love and worship comes through again and again--walking with us through our struggles and lifting us up in our despair while also buoying us up in our celebrations. God is faithful--even when we stray. God does not leave us. And for that we simply say thanks! Lord of all creation, you promise to walk with us through all that life throws at us. Right now, it seems that life is throwing too much in the direction of many of us--help us. Meet us in our despair, our wondering, our lack of faith and strengthen us so that we can move forward knowing you go with us, always. Amen.

14 The Lord upholds all who are falling,
and raises up all who are bowed down.
15 The eyes of all look to you,
and you give them their food in due season.
16 You open your hand,

17 The Lord is just in all his ways,

18 The Lord is near to all who call on him,
to all who call on him in truth.
