From Pastor Molly:Remembering
In our final week of this month's film-based sermon series, we get to Coco. Though it's a Disney cartoon, Coco tells a beautiful story that has powerful things to say to people of all ages. A beloved song from the film, "Remember Me," won the Oscar for best original song this year; it names the power of memory.
At the center of the sacrament we share every week, Holy Communion, is Jesus commanding us to share the bread and cup "in remembrance of me." Each week, we remember the gift of profound, divine love and self-giving sacrifice that is at the heart of the church. This remembering is much more than intellectual recall--it is a powerful remembering that forms and transforms us.
I look forward to sharing that sacrament, and other stories of divine love, with you again this Sunday.
with gratitude,
Pastor Molly

Ephesians 3:14-21Ephesians 3:14 For this reason, I fall on my knees before the Father, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth receives its character. 16 I pray that from the treasures of his glory he will empower you with inner strength by his Spirit, 17 so that the Messiah may live in your hearts through your trusting. Also I pray that you will be rooted and founded in love, 18 so that you, with all God’s people, will be given strength to grasp the breadth, length, height and depth of the Messiah’s love, 19 yes, to know it, even though it is beyond all knowing, so that you will be filled with all the fullness of God.
20 Now to him who by his power working in us is able to do far beyond anything we can ask or imagine, 21 to him be glory in the Messianic Community and in the Messiah Yeshua from generation to generation forever. Amen. (Complete Jewish Bible).
Ephesians 3:14-21
Verse 15
[15] Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named,
Of whom — The Father. The whole family of angels in heaven, saints in paradise, and believers on earth is named. Being the "children of God," (a more honourable title than "children of Abraham,") and depending on him as the Father of the family.
Verse 16
[16] That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;
The riches of his glory — The immense fulness of his glorious wisdom, power, and mercy.
The inner man — The soul.
Verse 17
[17] That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,
Dwell — That is, constantly and sensibly abide.
Verse 18
[18] May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height;
That being rooted and grounded — That is, deeply fixed and firmly established, in love. Ye may comprehend - So far as an human mind is capable.
What is the breadth of the love of Christ — Embracing all mankind.
And length — From everlasting to everlasting.
And depth — Not to be fathomed by any creature.
And height — Not to be reached by any enemy.
Verse 19
[19] And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.
And to know — But the apostle corrects himself, and immediately observes, it cannot be fully known. This only we know, that the love of Christ surpasses all knowledge. That ye may be filled - Which is the sum of all.
With all the fulness of God — With all his light, love, wisdom, holiness, power, and glory. A perfection far beyond a bare freedom from sin.
Verse 20
[20] Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,
Now to him — This doxology is admirably adapted to strengthen our faith, that we may not stagger at the great things the apostle has been praying for, as if they were too much for God to give, or for us to expect from him.
That is able — Here is a most beautiful gradation. When he has given us exceeding, yea, abundant blessings, still we may ask for more. And he is able to do it. But we may think of more than we have asked. He is able to do this also. Yea, and above all this.
Above all we ask — Above all we can think. Nay, exceedingly, abundantly above all that we can either ask or think.
Verse 21
[21] Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.
In the church — On earth and in heaven. (John Wesley’s Explanatory Notes).

August Sermon Series: Jesus Loves the Earth
His teaching is full of stories and metaphors that draw lessons from the natural world. He spoke of farmers and fishermen, of mother hens and fig trees, inviting us to think deeply about the world around us.
We believe that Jesus' teachings have a lot to say to us as we try to navigate our ecological responsibilities today.
Join Pastor Molly for this five week sermon series, starting August 5.
Mid-summer Sermon Series
All July, our sermon series will be taking us to the movies, as we connect Christian theology to these from recent films. They're all on video or available streaming, so we hope you might pop some popcorn and watch them, too. For this final week, we'll talk about Coco.
Join us for the Baja Recap!

Remember me
Though I have to say goodbye
Remember me
Don't let it make you cry
For ever if I'm far away
I hold you in my heart
I sing a secret song to you
Each night we are apart
Remember me
Though I have to travel far
Remember me
Each time you hear a sad guitar
Know that I’m with you
The only way that I can be
Until you’re in my arms again
Remember me
Que nuestra canción no deje de latir
Solo con tu amor yo puedo existir (recuérdame)
Que nuestra canción no deje de latir
Solo con tu amor yo puedo existir (recuérdame)
Si en tu mente vivo estoy (recuérdame)
Mis sueños yo te doy
Te llevo en mi corazon
Y te acompañaré
Unidos en nuestra canción
Contigo ahi estaré
Recuérdame
Si sola crees estar
Recuérdame
Y mi cantar te irá a abrazar
Aun en la distancia
Nunca vayas a olvidar
Que yo contigo siempre voy
Recuérdame
If you close your eyes and let the music play
Keep our love alive, I'll never fade away
If you close your eyes and let the music play
Keep our love alive, I'll never fade away
If you close your eyes and let the music play
Keep our love alive, I'll never fade away
Remember me
For I will soon be gone
Remember me
And let the love we have live on
And know that I'm with you the only way that I can be
So, until you're in my arms again
Remember me
Que nuestra canción no deje de latir

Things look clear in black and white
The living color tends to dye our sight
Like dynomite
Just imagine my surprise
When I looked into your eyes and saw
Your disguise
If we dare expose our hearts
Just to feel the purest parts
That's when strange sensations start to grow
We are not alone
Find out when your cover's blown
There'll be somebody there to break your fall
We are not alone
'Cause when you cut down to the bone
We're really not so different after all
After all
We're not alone
Flying high above the sky
The battles down below look simplified
With no place to hide
But on inspection of the dust
I came upon this thing called trust
It helps us to adjust
Just imagine my surprise
When I looked into your eyes
I knew right then I'd never let you go
We are not alone
Find out when your cover's blown
There'll be somebody there to break your fall
We are not alone
'Cause when you cut down to the bone
We're really not so different after all
After all
We're not alone
Not alone
After all
Not alone
If we dare expose our hearts
Just to feel the purest parts
That's when strange sensations start to grow
We are not alone
Find out when your cover's blown
There'll be somebody there to break your fall
We are not alone
'Cause when you cut down to the bone

We are not alone
Find out when your cover's blown

Last Sunday we, unknowingly, had a very unusual serendipity happen during worship. You who attended heard a unique musical piece during the offertory as arranged by our Director of Music, Jim Raycroft. He explained the piece, “O Sifuni Mungu”, sung by seven singers who were led by Aleta Braxton, our guest soloist for the day. Each singer had their own part and sang it in the Swahili and English languages as was intended. Naturally I didn't get any of the Swahili and almost none of the English, but the back up band with its rhythms being pounded out, made it a most interesting piece to be heard.
Now, to the serendipity. After the worship service I was visiting with Janine Shors, daughter of June Shors, who has been serving the U.S. State Department in Afghanistan for the past year and will soon be in Tanzania for her next assignment and for the the best news, her husband and daughter will be with her for this coming year. Knowing nearly nothing about her new location, I asked her what the language was spoken there. She answered, “Swahili” and added how interesting it was the she came on the Sunday where a song was sung in that language. What are the odds of that happening? We have been remembering Janine with a lighted yellow candle on the altar for this past year.August, 2018 will soon be here and you should plan to be a part of all that is going on. The McCandless family have been stalwarts of FUMCRB. Kathy and Rick have sung in church choirs nearly their whole lives. They sang in the two children's choirs (Crusader Choir for boys, and Carol Choir for girls). In those days they had a large youth group and so the church also had a high school age choir. They both sang with the Chancel choir until they moved to Long Beach, and joined the California Heights choir there. Kathy stopped singing with that choir about 10 years ago. They moved back to Redondo Beach in 2010 and Rick was invited to be the Tenor Section Leader by the previous music director at FUMCRB, Linda Waterman.
Their children have always been musical. The two oldest, Dan and Kelly, as well as the youngest, Luke, have sung in church, middle school, high school, and college. Colleen sang in middle school choir but chose drama in high school. She has performed as a lead in three musicals. Pretty early on they discovered that they all could sing, had four parts covered...

Colleen sang in middle school choir but choose drama in high school. She has performed as a lead in three musicals. Pretty early on they discovered that they all could sing, had four parts covered, and sometimes could switch parts between each other. As a side note, Kathy and Rick were members of the first bell choir at FUMCRB and rang handbells starting in 1980 and going through 2010. Several of the kids also played bells. Kelly is now studying composition at CSU Long Beach, and is one of the “in-house” arrangers for the family band.
Pepper Choplin is a composer and conductor based in Raleigh, North Carolina, who has literally hundreds of anthems in his catalogue. With a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, he went on to earn a Master of Music degree in composition from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Currently, he serves as Minister of Music at Greystone Baptist Church in Raleigh, a position he’s held for over 22 years. His a cappella anthem We Are Not Alone was written in 2005 and is one that he personally considers to be “one of my most enduring anthems”. We actually have it in our library, as well.
Remember Me is the Academy Award winning song from the Disney movie Coco. It was the 2nd Oscar for the songwriting team of Robert Lopez and Kristen Andersen-Lopez, who also won an Oscar for Best Original Song for Let It Go from the movie Frozen. The song is sung twice in the movie, once by the young star Miguel, who sang it to Mama Coco as a ballad, which is how it was originally intended, and sung to young Coco, by the true composer, Coco’s father, Hector. It is also sung as an uptempo “ranchero” style showpiece by Ernesto de la Cruz, who ultimately is discovered to have stolen the tune from his good friend Hector (with friends like that….). Later, in the end credits, it’s sung as a duet by Miguel (Anthony Gonzales) and Natalia Lafourcade. It is a unique song for the style, in that it has a very creative harmonic structure (most songs of this genre tend to be a bit more harmonically simplistic) and has a lovely, lyrical melody. When we saw Cocoin the theatre, I told Eileen as we were walking out to the car that it was going to win the Oscar, and it did. Disney was very careful to make sure that virtually all of the creative team involved was Hispanic and that the music was performed by authentic Mexican performers (lots of them), much of it being recorded in Mexico. As the Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a distinctly Mexican celebration (Mexico City actually created a Dia de los Muertos parade for the opening scene of the James Bond movie Spectre), they wanted to be sure that there was no possibility of charges of “whitewashing”.
