"Giving employee caregivers time and space to be with their loved one and figure out what's next is a great starting point. Companies like Microsoft, Starbucks, Bristol-Myers Squibb and Facebook all offer paid time off for employees to care for sick family members. Facebook even offers 10 to 20 days of bereavement leave, which provides much-needed time for caregivers to focus on self-care."

"In particular, caregivers who developed health problems around the time of their spouse's increased need, had a steep decline in their own healthover the study period. Surprisingly, caregivers with longstanding health problems seemed more resilient to the increased caregiving burden, the study team reports in Age & Ageing."

"What newcomers have entered the market? Besides 'longevity market new media' like Stria that provided a splash of cold water for startups and investors in the older adult space. Although there is little evidence that any investors are bullish about the general older adult market, innovators continue to create new offerings to help older adults live better lives. Here are five recent and soon-launching offerings to help."

"Call them adult foster homes, board and care homes, residential homes, group or adult care homes. Regardless of the moniker, these small-setting, family-like environments blend neatly into local communities, and are a viable housing option for older adults who may need help with daily living basics, but not the clinical care or amenities of traditional assisted living facilities and nursing homes."
Caregiving Policy Updates
Americans overwhelmingly support the idea of paid family leave, whether to care for a new child, one's own illness, or a sick family member. Republicans and Democrats have come a long way toward finding agreement on this issue, but Congress has yet to turn that growing consensus into actionable, bipartisan policy. On July 18, BPC's Task Force on Paid Family Leave began a bipartisan conversation about why we need bipartisanship on paid family leave, why the country needs a federal approach, and how the lack of paid family leave is impacting American families and children. The forum included a conversation with Ivanka Trump. Watch the forum HERE.
Late last month, the CCD Task Force on Financial Security, along with 159  Ally organizations, sent a sign-on letter to Congress, urging them to pass the ABLE Age Adjustment Act (S. 817/HR 1874). The Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Age Adjustment Act would amend Section 529A(e) of the Internal Revenue Code to increase the eligibility threshold for ABLE accounts for onset of disability from prior to age 26 to prior to age 46. ABLE accounts are tax-favored accounts that are designed to enable individuals with disabilities to save for and pay for disability-related expenses. Read the letter HERE.
