When Siblings Share the Caregiving for an Aging Parent, Will It Be Welfare or Warfare? Forbes | August 29, 2018
"Caring for aging parents is a journey many of us will take in our lives. Some will plan ahead, while others will unexpectedly become caregivers and learn as they go. Many will encounter common challenges: parents who need but refuse help, a fragmented health care system, the staggering cost of care and the daunting task of somehow finding time to juggle it all. But of all the difficulties family caregivers face, one of the biggest sources of stress is trying to get on the same page with our siblings."
Some Days, Driving the Kids to School. Some Days, Taking Mom to the Doctor.
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette | August 27, 2018
"Instead of being confined to his desk at a medical tech company in Squirrel Hill, the senior software engineer was able to work from his laptop as he sat in the gymnastics studio. Such working arrangements are becoming increasingly common as more workers are finding themselves in the 'sandwich generation' - people who are caring for both older parents and young children. This change in the workforce is putting pressure on businesses to make scheduling accommodations to ensure that caregiving workers can succeed."
Who's Caring for Caregivers as Complex Medical Needs Move Home?
The American Journal of Managed Care | August 23, 2018
"A chronic health situation may worsen or, more likely, a crisis may happen suddenly with a call in the middle of the night. Millions of Americans then find themselves as a caregiver to a loved one, and as people live longer, as well as farther away from their families, healthcare providers, healthcare systems, policy makers, and employers need to change how they recognize and respond to the growing numbers of caregivers taking care of older adults, experts in the field said."
A Late-Life Surprise: Taking Care of Frail, Aging Parents
Kaiser Health News | August 23, 2018
"'When we think of an adult child caring for a parent, what comes to mind is a woman in her late 40s or early 50s,' said Lynn Friss Feinberg, Senior Strategic Policy Adviser for AARP's Public Policy Institute. 'But it's now common for people 20 years older than that to be caring for a parent.' The implications of later-life caregiving are considerable.Turning an elderly parent in bed, helping someone get into a car...can be demanding on older bodies, which are more vulnerable and less able to recover.'"
How Caregiving Makes You Healthier, Stronger and Wiser
Next Avenue | August 10, 2018
"Numerous studies have shown that people with stronger social networks have lower rates of depression, better physical health, and longer lives. Other studies have been even more specific; one found that older people who were more socially active had significantly less cognitive decline over a 12-year period than those who were more isolated. And while everyone benefits from close social ties, when it comes to caregiving, caregivers seem to benefit even more than those they care for."
