Moldova trafficking intervention changes lives
Work in the red-light district of Moldova is heavy, challenging, and sometimes heartbreaking, but local Nazarene trafficking intervention workers get to see the power of God’s love transform women and families in ways they may never have been able to experience on their own.
This ministry includes an intervention team and a mobile medical clinic to offer counseling, prayer, HIV/AIDS testing, and other free medical services. The team has worked with many people over the years to help bring healing and provide career resources to trafficking victims. One of those victims was a single mother named Allison* who lost her children thanks to her poor health and financial situation.
About two years ago, Allison showed up at a coffee club ministry that meets every Wednesday night. While the group discussed healthy relationships, Allison waited patiently for the study to be over.
“Afterward, Allison and our team met with a translator who is specialized in trauma counseling and has worked with trafficking victims from Moldova in the past,” said Becky Sukanen, a missionary in Moldova. “Allison said she had decided to visit our trafficking intervention clinic after first meeting us through our street outreach. She wanted to know if we could take her into our program. We listened to her painful story, shared through sobs.”
Ten years ago, Allison was young and pregnant with her first child — a son. Two years later she and her husband had a second child — a daughter. When her daughter was only 2, her husband abandoned her. As the stress of being a single mother took its toll on her, Allison began having seizures. The doctors diagnosed her with epilepsy.
Because of her seizures, she lost her job as a waitress. When she turned to her mother for financial support, her mom started to sell herself on the streets of Moldova. This was the only way she could support herself, her daughter and her grandchildren. Seeing her mother reduced to such desperation only intensified Allison’s stress, turning her hair entirely grey, although she was just in her mid-20s.
Unable to see any other option, Allison also turned to work on the street for money. She hated it so much that she stopped, and they lived in the woods for a while. During that time, she decided her children would be better off in a state orphanage — an institution she dreaded but which seemed to be the best option available.
While visiting a social worker one day, Allison had a seizure. This episode led to the approval of her children’s adoption outside of Moldova.
Allison’s situation left her a childless, broken woman, traumatized and alone with a medical condition that renders her nearly unemployable. Without clear options, she had turned again to sexual exploitation as a last resort. Despite being short on trust, she responded to the hope presented by the local trafficking outreach ministry.
Recently, team members were able to locate her children. Although they will not be reunited, she was able to see photos of them, safe and living together with a family from Switzerland. When she saw the photos, she wept, happy that they were safe.
Four months into working with her, Allison came to the team and reluctantly admitted she was pregnant and panic-stricken. The staff listened to and comforted her.
Unable to face the unbearable loss of placing another child into adoption, Allison decided to keep her baby, and the intervention team walked through the pregnancy with her. She now has a healthy baby boy named Igor*.
The team held a baby shower for him, and the team’s home church donated formula, clothes, toys, and diapers for her to use until she started to get help from the government.
Next, Allison needed help financially. The team asked her about her skills and learned she knew how to sew by hand. They bought a sewing machine with money from Living Word Church of the Nazarene in Houston, Texas, and she started sewing. To make Allison’s employment sustainable, they offered to let her pay for the machine in exchange for 36 pillows or pillow covers.
“We have seen a noticeable change in Allison, who used to blame everything on God,” Sukanen said. “She now takes responsibility for her decisions and is learning and trying new ways to sew.”
Although Allison still has a long road of healing and recovery ahead, she had come far from when the team first met her. She earns money selling her pillowcases and other crafts, and she has completed 20 of the 36 pillows to pay for the sewing machine.
“Knowing that our ministry has helped Allison, her baby, and many others to find a new future is encouraging to us and reminds us that what we do for Christ makes a difference,” Sukanen said.

Church of the Nazarene in Venezuela enters new territory
Venezuela First District Evangelism Coordinator Alfredo Gómez and his team opened a new church-type mission 11 October in the Amazon State. The mission is located in the La Florida neighborhood in the city of Puerto Ayacucho.
After months of prayer, District Superintendent Jimmy De Gouveia and Gómez decided to start the pilot church in Amazon State, which is one of the largest states in the country, with a population of 175,000. Until now, the Church of the Nazarene has not had a presence in the state.
Gómez designated Yenny Vargas as leader of the mission. She will receive training in a local evangelism program called “The Route of Hope,” JESUS film, and other evangelistic tools.
On 12 October, Vargas, Gómez, and the rest of the team walked through the community to invite the residents to a showing of the JESUS film. Of the 20 people that came, 12 made a profession of faith. That weekend, the church held its first Sunday service. (Church of the Nazarene South America) Read more

Congo West superintendent steps down after 15 years
During the 20th Democratic Republic of Congo West District Assembly on 13 October, Hermenelgilde Matungulu resigned as superintendent of the Congo West District after 15 years of service. He is passing the baton off to Dieu Merci Nzola.
Matungulu is a respected leader on the district. He continually trained local leaders and planted many churches throughout his ministry.
“Rev. Matungulu, we honor you for your years of service to God and the Church,” said Jill Fothergill, a missionary on the Africa Central Field. “We pray God’s richest blessings upon you as you continue to follow Him and serve Him. May you continue to share your testimony and lead others into a right relationship with Christ.”
Jill also had words of encouragement for Matungulu’s successor.
“Rev. Nzola, we congratulate you,” Fothergill said. “May the Lord grant you wisdom, vision, and strength as you lead God’s people in DR Congo West District. May the Lord’s face shine upon you as you shepherd multiple pastors, evangelize, and take on new responsibilities within the Church.”
She went on to ask the district to continue supporting and encouraging new leaders in Africa as they have in the past.
“To the DR Congo West District, we implore you as dearly loved brothers and sisters in Christ, may you know the love of Christ and be ready for the future ahead,” Fothergill said. “We are so grateful for the amazing example given by the West Congo District and are hopeful that other districts will follow suit when it comes to leadership transition and empowering the next generation.” (Church of the Nazarene Africa) Read more
Nepal
A long-term plan: Continued earthquake recovery in Nepal
On the foothills of the Himalayas, overlooking a valley dotted with rice fields and small-scale farms, sits a newly constructed earthquake-resistant classroom where 60 children are silently engrossed in their books. Sitting on the floor in small groups scattered around the large room, they complete their homework, receive tutorials, play games, and eat together.
All of these children are from families affected by the devastating 2015 earthquake that struck near the capital city of Kathmandu. It left approximately 9,000 dead, destroyed hundreds of thousands of structures, and left vast numbers of people displaced.
Following the initial emergency response phase in the first few months after the disaster, Nazarene Compassionate Ministries Nepal has focused on long-term rehabilitation. The project is mainly focused in some of the hardest hit rural communities in the Okhaldhunga and Sindhupalchok districts — remote areas many hours’ drive from Kathmandu. These villages had some of the highest numbers of casualties from the earthquake as well as the highest percentage of destroyed buildings. For this reason, they were chosen by the local church to reach the most vulnerable.
In these villages and in Kathmandu, the church has been implementing a comprehensive project designed to assist families as they rebuild their lives. The project aims to impact the family as a whole — focusing on education, nutrition, and economic empowerment. Right now, 188 families across five communities in Nepal are directly impacted by this project.
Part of the project are the seven child development centers now serving hundreds of children with tutoring and educational classes every day of the school week. The purpose is to provide a fun, safe, and nurturing space for children to thrive — nutritional education is also part of the curriculum. The extra educational support complements their regular schooling.
Other pieces of the plan include self-help groups for women and men that have started in four villages, where families save money on a monthly basis and make small loans to each other out of their savings. The purpose of these loans is to support the start-up of small businesses, purchase tools or seeds, or meet other immediate needs that families face. Additionally, agricultural training has been offered to families to accompany the seeds they receive and plant in their home gardens and farms. Throughout these communities, children and families are working toward a future where they are more stable and less vulnerable than before the earthquake.
When disasters occur, people often only think of those who are in immediate desperate need; those who have lost loved ones, whose homes have been destroyed, or those who do not have access to food and water. But people often forget that the need continues for weeks, months, and years after a major disaster. The great benefit of the church is that it exists before the disaster, during, and long after. The church is present and serving as people get back on their feet long after the disaster strikes.
The earthquake rehabilitation project in Nepal is a five-year initiative with the aim of supporting lasting change in the lives of these families. It aims to address the needs of the whole family by creating chances for both children and parents to thrive educationally, nutritionally, and financially. Florida senior apartment complex celebrates 50 years
The Nazarene sponsored senior living complex, Lake Worth Towers, celebrated its 50th anniversary last week with church and government officials in Lake Worth, Florida.
Lake Worth Towers is an eleven-story complex of 195 apartments, providing affordable housing for over 200 moderate-income seniors 62 years of age and older. The facility was initially sponsored by the Lake Worth First Church of the Nazarene and opened in 1968. It is the tallest and largest structure in the city, which is located in south Florida near West Palm Beach, just across the street from the church.
General Superintendent David Graves represented the global Church of the Nazarene at the event.
“On behalf of the Board of General Superintendents we are proud of what has been accomplished over these 50 years through Lake Worth Towers,” Graves said. “The care and dignity given to seniors through this remarkable facility has provided a model for all of us around the world.”
Lake Worth Towers was built through the determined vision of C. R. Moore, the founder of both the Lake Worth Church of the Nazarene and Lake Worth Towers. The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded a 50-year loan of $2.4 million to purchase an entire residential block and fund construction of the facility. In the past 50 years, over 2,500 seniors have lived in Lake Worth Towers.
City of Lake Worth Mayor Pam Triolo shared her gratitude for what Lake Worth Towers represents in the community.
“Lake Worth Towers is a lovely beacon and icon in our city,” Triolo said. “It could only have been built through a lot of prayer. Because Lake Worth Towers cares for our families and seniors, it is really the heart of our city.”
During the ceremonies held in the church Family Life Center, Lake Worth Towers Administrator Robert Spear gave an oversized check to Towers’ Board President Dennis Moore, the son of Lake Worth Towers Founder C. R. Moore, and the rest of the board. The check represented the final payment for the 50-year HUD loan.
“Satisfying this 50-year loan from the federal government is huge for Lake Worth Towers as we plan how to best provide quality and dignified housing for huge increases in the number of seniors expected now and in the future,” Dennis said.
Palm Beach County Commissioner David Kerner also spoke at the event.
“I am reminded of the amazing things that can be accomplished at the intersection of faith, community involvement, and the government working together,” Kerner said. “This symbiotic relationship has enabled Lake Worth Towers to have a remarkable impact on the community and in particular those who reside here.”
Chuck Russ is the current pastor of the Lake Worth First Church of the Nazarene and serves on the Towers’ Board. The Southern Florida District Superintendent Brian Wilson was the Master of Ceremonies at the 50th Anniversary event and also serves on the Towers’ Board. More information can be acquired about Lake Worth Towers at lakeworthtowers.com. (Lake Worth Towers via NCN News submissions, Stories to share? Send an email to news@nazarene.org.) Read more

Guyana pastor couples seek healthy marriages through seminar
The Guyana Central District held its first Marriage Enrichment Seminar from 18-21 October in Georgetown, Guyana. Nearly 30 pastor couples participated in the event led by Miguel and Irene Garita of the Mesoamerica Region Family Care Ministry.
“It was a blessed time with good participation from those who attended,” Irene said. “The attitude of the group was a joyful one, and they shared special times at the altar during the worship services.”
Some of the topics they covered were “What We Bring into the Marriage” and “Healthy Communication.” The Garitas helped the couples analyze how their marriages functioned in order to identify areas where they could grow. In the evenings, they held public worship services where approximately 100 people attended.
“We are grateful for our excellent translators, Rev. July McKeithen and Dr. Faith London, and District Superintendent and Field Strategy Coordinator Dr. Alphonso Porter and his wife, Teil, who organized the event,” Irene said. (Church of the Nazarene Mesoamerica) Read moreOaxaca, Mexico
Oaxaca Northwest District holds Cross-Cultural OrientationApproximately 30 people participated in the Cross-Cultural Orientation held by the Oaxaca Northwest District 18-20 October at the Etla Church of the Nazarene in Mexico.
Etla church Pastor and District Communications Coordinator Josué Barrera said the event is part of the district’s goal to encourage church growth where there is no Nazarene presence.
“It was a challenging time, a time of learning, and it made a great impact in the lives of the young people who attended as well as the local church which helped with the event,” Barrera said.
Global Missions and Genesis Coordinator Scott Armstrong, Nazarene Missions International Coordinator Ana Maria Crocker, and South Mexico Field Global Missions Coordinator Claudia Cruz Martinez each led different workshops at the event.
Participants were trained to see the needs of those around them and to reach out to those who have not heard the gospel.
“They were encouraged to let go of their own comfort and their normal methods in order to present the gospel in creative ways,” Barrera said.
Crocker was one of the presenters at the event. She spoke about the importance of the local church as a support for missions around the world. The orientation closed with a message from District Superintendent Elias Betanzos on the call to “Be a generation that makes a difference — that does something for God.” (Church of the Nazarene Mesoamerica) Read more

Flags of the Nations: Canada
The Maple Leaf is a flag consisting of a red field with a white square at its center, in the middle of which is featured a stylized,
11-pointed, red maple leaf.
Since September 1, 2009, the Church of the Nazarene's Global Ministry Center (GMC) proudly flies a flag each week of one of the many nations in which the denomination is present in ministry. Leaders were invited to send a national flag to be flown at the GMC alongside the flag of the United States*. The national flags rotate weekly, and photos of them raised are sent to the church leaders of that country.
This week: Canada
The Church of the Nazarene officially entered Canada in 1902.
Canada had a population of 35,623,680 in 2017. That same year, Canada reported 162 Churches of the Nazarene, 145 of which had been officially organized. Canada has 12,493 total members.
Canada has four Phase 3 districts and one Phase 1 district. It is a part of the USA/Canada Region. For more information about the USA/Canada Region, visit usacanadanazarene.org.
* = The weekly highlighted flag is raised on the middle of three poles in compliance with U.S. government protocols. It flies to the left of the GMC host-nation United States flag, which flies above the host-state flag of Kansas. The Christian flag flies on the third pole.
