Daily Scriptures from Reverend Dan Johnson ~ Monday, 4 November 2013 ~ “6th Commandment”
You shall not murder (Exodus 20:13).
It is nearly impossible for us to imagine the huge ADVANCE the 10 Commandments brought to civilization, and especially is this true with regard to these last five commandments - the ones that deal with how we live with other human beings.  The principle behind commandments 6 - 10 is the "preciousness of life."  Believe me when I say that that wasn't always the case!
Prior to Moses and Mt. Sinai, life was cheap.  And in many societies it remained so for way too long!  I'm almost finished reading a fascinating book by Gilbert King.  It's called:  The Devil in the Grove:  Thurgood Marshall, the Groveland Boys, and the Dawn of a New America.  Our Bishop recommended it to me, and I recommend it to you. It recalls a time in Groveland, Florida, and many parts of our country where, depending on the color of one's skin, life could be terribly and terrifyingly cheap, and justice was often a misnomer for prejudice.
Hopefully, the 10 Commandments and the Commandments of Jesus have and will continue to prevail.
