Please pray for:
We are requesting your prayers today for the family of Rev Gilbert Bakasa. Gilbert passed away on Monday, 28 October 2013, at University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka, Zambia, after an extended illness. He was 45 years old. Please pray for his wife Fredah and their four children at this time of deep sorrow; that God will comfort, strengthen and guide them in the days and weeks to come. Gilbert was the pastor of the Chaisa (Power of Change) Church of the Nazarene in Lusaka. The Power of Change Church planted in 2009 has grown in attendance to over 400 on Sunday mornings and has planted at least five other churches or preaching points. Gilbert also served as the Africa Central Field Nazarene Compassionate Ministries Coordinator for the past 10 years and has represented NCM at various conferences in the USA and in other locations. As NCM Coordinator he oversaw several USAID projects and was involved in medical, medical training, agriculture, and community development projects, Nazarene Community Schools, Child Development Centres as well as in other development projects. Gilbert worked for the Ministry of Finance for the Zambia government for several years, receiving training in the area of finance. During that time he felt the call of God to ministry and became a lay pastor. He was one of the first students to enrol in the Lusaka centre of extension education programme for ministerial training offered through the Nazarene Theological College of Central Africa and one of the first graduates with a Diploma in Theology. He had recently received his BTh through the online distance learning programme of Nazarene Theological College in Muldersdrift, South Africa. Gilbert was a delegate from Zambia to the 2013 General Assembly in Indianapolis, IN, USA. He served the church faithfully in many ways at the local, district, and field levels. A memorial service for the family, church family and friends from Lusaka was held on Wednesday morning at 9am at the Bakasa home. The funeral will be held in Gilbert’s home village of Siavonga in Southern Zambia on Thursday, 31 October 2013. Your prayers for the family, church family, and the other ministries of the church impacted by this great loss are greatly appreciated.
It is with heavy hearts that we ask for your prayers today for the Potgieter family. Gideon Potgieter, 25, passed away very unexpectedly on Monday, 28 October 2013, following complications from Asthma, pneumonia and flu in Ladysmith, South Africa. Gideon was a game ranger at a lodge outside Ladysmith and had gone to the hospital because he was not feeling well. Please pray for the family during this most difficult time of sadness and deep sorrow. Gideon was the nephew of Kitty Voges, Executive Secretary to the Africa Regional Director, Peet Voges, Radio Ministries Coordinator, and Anna Krog who serves in Nazarene Compassionate Ministries at the Africa Regional Office. Gideon was the youngest of six children and a good friend to both Kitty and Peet and Anna’s children. We covet your prayers for the Potgieter, Voges and Krog families today and in the days ahead.
It is with great sadness that we ask for your prayers today for the Kanenungo family. Pastor Givemore James Kanenungo passed away on Tuesday, 22 October 2013, at his home outside of Harare, Zimbabwe, while working on a borehole. The Kanenungo family has been morning the loss of Rumbidzaishe Kanenungo Dube who passed away less than two weeks earlier on 10 October. They had been together as a family for her funeral service with Givemore and his family over the weekend. The family is devastated by the loss of another family member. He was the brother of Rev Freddy Kanenungo and uncle of Simbarashe and the late Rumbi Kanenungo and the pastor of the Mutoko Church of the Nazarene in Zimbabwe. Please pray for Givemore’s wife Memory (42) and their four children: Precious (16 - who is writing exams), Ruth (11), Miriam (6), and son Passion (6 months old). Pray for Simba and all of the Kanenungo family during this most difficult time as well as for the church family. The funeral was held on Wednesday, 23 October 2013. Simba had just returned to South Africa and was not able to be present. Simba serves at the Africa Regional Office in Nazarene Compassionate Ministries. We covet your prayers for this dear family.
We are requesting your prayers once again for the North Kivu area of the Democratic Republic of Congo. DS Katambu Balibanga reports that as of 20 May 2013, war has broken out once again between the government and rebel forces. We last requested urgent prayer in November 2012.
DS Balibanga wrote, “Many of our members have run away from their houses and are sleeping in some of our schools and others in the church building in Goma. Two primary schools, Bora Primary and Nazarene Primary school are full of displaced people from Nyiragongo, Muja, Mutaho. and Kibati. The situation in Goma is very catastrophic. For three days now all the activities are disturbed. Please pray for those Nazarene and others who are suffering because of the war. The general secretary of UN, Ban Ki-Moon and the President of World Bank will visit Goma 23 May and try to find a solution for this problem.”
Please join with us in prayer for fellow Nazarene’s in the DRC who are in life threatening conditions. Pray that in the chaos, disorder, confusion, instability, and suffering that the people would turn to the Lord for strength and hope. Pray for our leaders, that they will continue to be strong as they minister to those who look up to them for help. Pray that the Lord will protect the people of North Kivu against these evil and brutal elements. Pray that the Lord will help those who are in positions to negotiate, that they will find a solution and end to this war and that peace will be restored.
Pray for God to intervene in this situation so the fighting will stop and that peace will be restored to the area. Please pray for God’s protection and provision for His children in the midst of this situation. Pray that the hearts of all those involved in the conflict will be turned to God and find His salvation and healing in their lives and in their nation. Pray for fellow Nazarene’s in Rwanda also, as refugees flee from the war to that country.
Family of Methode Kabengele: Methode Kabengele, pastor of the Rubaya Church of the Nazarene on the North Kivu District of the Democratic Republic of Congo, passed away on February 28, 2013, following a vehicle accident. Kabengele was studying for the certificate in Biblical Studies through the Institut Théologique Nazaréen (ITN) at the Masisi Centre. The funeral was held on March 1 in Goma, DRC, where he was raised. Please pray for his family, his church, and also the ITN Masisi at this time of sadness and sudden loss. Pray that God will comfort them in their sorrow and give them strength, peace, and guidance for the days and weeks ahead.
Africa Regional Leadership: Pray for wisdom and clarity of vision as Africa regional leadership work on a strategy to establish the church in areas of the continent that we have not yet entered. There are many unreached people groups in Africa who need to be given the opportunity to hear the Gospel. Some of these people groups live in troubled areas where it is very difficult to receive permission to preach the Word of God.
NCM Africa: Pray that Nazarene Compassionate Ministries - Africa will continue to make a great impact in communities that do not have clean water. NCM Africa is mobilizing resources to provide or construct solar-powered and hand pumps for boreholes. This will provide clean water to communities that have lived for many years without water or with access to only dirty water that causes disease.
JESUS Film Teams: Pray for the JESUS Film teams facing opposition. Pray that they will see God’s hand in their work for His Kingdom.
Relief from Disasters Around the Globe: Every day we hear of natural disasters and the result to lives disrupted or destroyed. Many people around the world continue to experience trauma. Pray for people who are affected by circumstances out of their control and that Christians will offer compassion and the hope of Christ to those who are hurting.
NMI Ministry: Please pray that every NMI ministry around the world will be led by the Holy Spirit to encourage local churches to have an active heart for mission - in their Jerusalem, their Judea, their Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

Extraordinary Prayer Request: Every Nazarene Local Church experiencing a real movement of the Holy Spirit -
by Don Gardner
Tears sprang into his eyes and ran down his cheeks as the retired pastor asked, "Why don't we see the Holy Spirit moving today, as we saw Him so long ago?"
I believe and scripture reveals that God wants to bless His church and His people with a fresh fire and a fresh movement of the Holy Spirit. I also believe few are ready to make the kinds of self-sacrifice that it will take for this to happen.
My greatest burden for the church is to see God's people overcome with His Holy Spirit. If pastors, DSs, laymen and leaders could humble themselves, pray, and seek His face, turn from their wicked ways, I believe we would see an incredible outpouring of the Holy Spirit that would sweep into a movement that would not only change us, but would change the world. God promised it.
It is time to pray!
"If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land." 2 Chronicles 7:14

merchandise items for the convenience of churches in fulfilling their mission.
A major function of this office is the translation of Christian literature into multiple languages of Africa. Translation committees are in place on each of the six fields in order to serve the needs of the church in this capacity and also to print and distribute literature that is not only necessary, but cost effective for ministry.
ANP is part of the Regional Office and is located in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Education
The Church of the Nazarene has always placed a strong emphasis on education. Primary emphasis in education across the Africa Region is given to the training of pastors and leaders for the work of the church throughout the continent. Nazarenes support two universities, Africa Nazarene University and Southern Africa Nazarene University, as well as theological colleges and seminaries, extension systems, distance learning, and institutions for technical training in Africa. For a complete list of educational providers, visit the Education section on this site.
Outreach to the Continent
Nazarenes are passionate about making a difference in the world by taking the Good News of Jesus Christ to people everywhere. Today there are missionaries and volunteers serving throughout Africa. The Church of the Nazarene ministers in many vernacular languages and dialects or tribal languages and has produced literature in many of these African languages. This missionary enterprise is made possible by the contributions of the global Nazarene family. Nazarenes also engage in starting new churches and congregations by praying, giving, and supporting worldwide volunteers and contracted missionaries.
Theology
The Church of the Nazarene is the largest denomination in the classical Wesleyan-Holiness tradition. The doctrine that distinguishes the Church of the Nazarene and other Wesleyan denominations from most other Christian denominations is that of entire sanctification. Nazarenes believe that God calls Christians to a life of holy living that is marked by an act of God, cleansing the heart from original sin and filling the individual with love for God and humankind. This experience is marked by entire consecration of the believer to do God's will and is followed by a life of seeking to serve God through service to others. Like salvation, entire sanctification is an act of God's grace, not of works. Our pursuant service to God is an act of love whereby we show our appreciation for the grace that has been extended to us through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Government
The government of the Church of the Nazarene is a combination of episcopacy and congregationalism. Six elected representatives serve on the Board of General Superintendents. This board is charged with the responsibility of administering the worldwide work of the Church of the Nazarene. The Board of General Superintendents also interprets the denomination's book of polity, the Manual of the Church of the Nazarene.
The General Assembly serves as the supreme doctrine-formulating, lawmaking, and elective authority of the Church of the Nazarene, subject to the provisions of the church constitution. Comprised of elected representatives from all of the denomination's regular districts globally, the General Assembly meets once every four years.
The General Assembly elects the members of the Board of General Superintendents and considers legislative proposals from the church's 428 districts. Topics under consideration may range from the method of calling a pastor to bioethics.
The General Assembly also elects representatives from around the world to the General Board of the Church of the Nazarene. The General Board carries out the corporate business of the denomination.
General Board members elected for Africa Region serve on the Regional Advisory Council which meets each year to discuss and action items specific to ministry of the Africa Region. The Regional Director for Africa, Field Strategy Coordinators (6), Regional Education Coordinator, and one other representative appointed by the Regional Director serve on this governing committee.
Compassionate Evangelism
Nazarenes are a compassionate people who believe in serving others. This is expressed locally through the services of members to their communities. Contributions from Nazarenes make possible the administration of Nazarene Compassionate Ministries/Helping Hands Africa(NCM/HHA). Following the example of Jesus, NCM/HHA seeks to educate, clothe, shelter, feed, heal, and ultimately empower those who suffer under oppression, injustice, violence, poverty, hunger, and disease. Through compassionate ministry centers and volunteer efforts, Nazarenes have been instrumental in assisting people in every part of sub-Saharan Africa who have been affected by war, famine, hurricane, flood, and other natural and man-made disasters.
The worldwide network of Nazarene churches makes it possible for the denomination to serve as a conduit of assistance to hurting nations. Nazarenes provide money for food, medical supplies, clothing, and other items to persons in a number of countries where there are pressing needs. In addition, the denomination’s missionary infrastructure is often used by World Relief and similar agencies when they need assistance in getting supplies to people in remote or troubled areas.
Nazarenes also offer their time and services on volunteer Work & Witness and Youth in Mission teams to build churches, schools, and clinics and to share the Good News of Jesus Christ.
The Church of the Nazarene reaches out to persons around the globe through the power of technology. Through the Internet, radio broadcasts in 33 languages, and video and printed materials in 95 languages, we share the message of hope in Jesus Christ and educate constituents and interested parties about people, programs, news, and events of interest in the life of the church.

Only the building was destroyed - The Church remains - by Jill Fothergill
Last November, with the first rains of the rainy season, the church building in Kafubu, a small village outside Lubumbashi, was destroyed. Since then, they have been meeting under a large mango tree. Despite their setback, this church has remained faithful and continued on as the church, without a building.
We were fortunate to see the large piece of property they are using as a farm. They are growing cabbage, corn, tomatoes, zucchini and a few green leafy vegetables eaten by many in Congo. This is great for the village, not only in supplying food for themselves, but also to sell and use as income.
This church has also begun a literacy program for women. Many women have not had the opportunity to go to school. In fact, here in Lubumbashi, school is not free. You must pay to attend school. The ladies in the church were very excited to show what they had been learning. Using the chalkboard, each woman took a turn writing a new word she had learned to write, as well as her name. It's beautiful to see their confidence and excitement.
We were privileged to help with the feeding program they have for kids. We filled up bowls with fufu, fish and linga linga (a green leaf vegetable).
God is so good! They have begun to build a new church, with their own means and hope to begin building a school soon; giving every child the opportunity to be educated. Bonne Samaritan Church of the Nazarene, in Kafubu is carrying out the mission of the church.
"You are the people of God; he loved you and chose you for his own. So then, you must clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Be tolerant with one another and forgive one another whenever any of you has a complaint against someone else. You must forgive one another just as the Lord has forgiven you. And to all these qualities add love, which binds all things together in perfect purity. The peace that Christ gives is to guide you in the decisions you make; for it is to this peace that God has called you together in the one body. And be thankful. Christ's message in all its richness must live in your hearts. Teach and instruct each other with all wisdom. Sing psalms, hymns, and sacred songs; sing to God with thanksgiving in your hearts. Everything you do or say, then, should be done in the name of the Lord Jesus, as you give thanks through him to God the Father." Colossians 3:12-17

Profile of a military chaplain: Veronica Mnyanda
FUNDISWA VERONICA MNYANDA serves as a chaplain with the South African Defence Force. She is single and lives with her son and two teenage grandsons.
Share about your decision to follow Christ.
I gave my life to Jesus at the age of 24, which was the 6th of April 1986, during the Sunday morning church service. I cannot recall what the message was about because my mind used to be far away even though my body would be in the church. The only words I heard the pastor say were, 'SIYAHAMBA THINA SIYA EZULWINI UZOSALA WENA NGOBA UTHANDA ISONO.' This means, 'We are going to heaven leaving you behind, because you love sin.' It seemed as if I was sleeping and woke up, I questioned myself, 'What is sin that I would not go to heaven because of it? That was the day I made a decision and gave my life to Jesus, I was truly born again, as I am still enjoying that blessing even today, I experienced something that I never experienced before, and my heart was overflowing with unspeakable joy. I love my Lord wholeheartedly as He saved and sanctified me. Before sanctification, which is regarded as the second work of grace, I was struggling a lot with my spiritual life, until I received this baptism of the Holy Spirit.
Share about your childhood.
I grew up in a Christian home, the whole family attended the Wesleyan Methodist Church for many years until my late beloved mother; Nowandile Phildah Mnyanda joined the Church of the Nazarene in 1982. She played a very important role in my life, in fact to all her children. She used to quote
It was not very long after I gave my life to Jesus at the First Church of the Nazarene Zone 11 Mdantsane East London that I sensed God's call in July 1986. I began my theological studies in January 1987 at Africa Nazarene Theological College Port Elizabeth. I did three years there, and my final year at Nazarene Theological College (NTC) when the four Nazarene colleges in South Africa merged together. I graduated in 1990.
How did you become a chaplain?
After graduation, I started pastoring. While I was still in Kimberley, something started to bother me every time and everywhere I saw soldiers in uniform; they were like a sheep without a shepherd. The pain and the passion to preach to them grew in my heart, but I did not know the 'how' part.
I applied to the South African National Defence Force in 2002, but I was only appointed as a regular military chaplain in February 2006. I was placed in Bloemfontein at 1 South African Battalion. It was a training and deploying unit, hence I deployed with my soldiers in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in 2008. Since, I have been transferred to different units gaining more experience.
What does a military chaplain do?
As a military chaplain, my job and ministry is to preach the gospel to the soldiers during the scheduled church services. I also have opportunities for personal soul winning during counseling sessions. Another opportunity is when soldiers are sick in hospitals and at homes where I can introduce them to Christ.
So, briefly, chaplains preach, counsel as needed and lead presentations and discussions about certain topics that have to do with value-based living - how soldiers can behave and conduct themselves respectfully. As a chaplain, I do hospital visits and home visits. Even when the soldiers are deployed internally and externally, I need to visit their families. Before the soldiers are deployed or attending long courses, the chaplain must conduct the resilience program, for both soldiers and their families, to prepare them as they will be separated for a longer period. The chaplain also has opportunity to deploy with the soldiers, hence I also deployed in Mussina (internal deployment) along the border between South Africa and Zimbabwe.
The next Out of Africa will have stories from Veronica's work as a chaplain and what she asks of you.

An Extra-ordinary Year- by Audrey Mhlongo, Extravaganza Coordinator
What a blessing for women, men, pastors, district superintendents, Africa South Field and Regional Staff to grace the Nazarene Women Extravaganza with full attendance and words of encouragement from August 8th to 11th at Good News Convention Centre. A total of 1188 members registered. A nice and extra-ordinary surprise was the feature of five women from Zimbabwe who heard of the Extravaganza and took a giant step to make history by being the first members from our neighboring field (Africa Central Field) to attend.
This was indeed a "different year" for the Extravaganza with various innovative activities that lifted all participating members to higher spiritual realm. A talent session revealed that there is indeed great potential in the Church of the Nazarene when members praised God with poems, speeches and songs from their recorded albums. Evangelist Grace Masilela challenged members in a historic Holy Communion on Friday evening to re-live the Last Supper of our Lord Jesus and his disciples. Rev Samantha Chambo, had an opportunity to gather the women Pastors in a Women Clergy meeting.
What a blessing to see members dancing to the Lord as they flocked to the front with their offerings to Him! Since it was a competition, the Extravaganza members were surprised by the South Eastern District, one of the smallest districts in Africa South Field, who obtained position one. From the free-will offerings, the Extravaganza Council donated a large amount to the Nazarene Theological College. Field Strategy Coordinator Collin Elliott showed his support by declaring that the Africa South Field would match the offering. The Principal of NTC was moved by this offer and indicated that this money will be used to tile the college library.
The guest speaker, Pastor Jackie Joseph from KwaZulu Natal District was used mightily of God in the conference theme: Holy, Living Sacrifice. She reminded members that since God gave us the Word, we can face all challenges. She challenged members to let God transform their lives to be holy in speech, in dress, in conduct, keeping their bodies pure as the temple of the living God.She reiterated that we have one Father, but it is ironical that His Word that has power to transform lives seems to have no effect in our lives. Pastor Joseph challenged all members to live according to God's word. She was a blessing to all members!
The Nazarene Women Extravaganza will continue to be an annual event to minister to members and encourage them to be steadfast in faith, lifting up the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen!
Transforming the world one child at a time - by Carol Mosiany
In late August, Africa Nazarene University hosted high school beneficiaries of Education For All
Children at the main campus in Ongata Rongai. EFAC is a non-governmental organization that sponsors and mentors high achievers from primary school for their post-primary education. The primary school alumni are drawn from the different parts of Kenya from humble backgrounds.

ANU hosts the EFAC Secretariat and also provides mentoring support through its students and staff who also double up as facilitators. In addition to the scholars, EFAC has a team of 45 high school graduates, two of whom joined Africa Nazarene University during the September 2013 trimester.
The university community welcomed the students for the 4-day seminar where they experienced great warmth and hospitality. ANU demonstrated its value of community by providing mentoring and leadership guidance. Vice Chancellor, Prof. Leah Marangu officially opened the workshop and in her keynote address emphasized the essence of servant leadership to the youth.
The forum covered various topics which included careers, reproductive health, entrepreneurship, goal setting, peer pressure and relationships. The keynote speakers included professionals who imparted their knowledge and skills to the ready-to-learn teenagers. The speakers included FARGO Courier Founder -Gai Cullen and ANU alumna and entrepreneur - Ms. Lucy Macharia among other ANU staff. The ANU/EFAC student mentors served as ushers and engaged the teenagers in extra-curricular activities. The students gained knowledge and competencies to add to their lives.
