We will study the lectionary texts, which follow the church calendar. It's an informal study, always open to all, at 8:30 a.m. in the New Room, just behind the church office.
Below are the lectionary reading for this week:
Habakkuk 1:1 The revelation which Habakkuk the prophet saw. 2 LORD,* how long will I cry, and you will not hear? I cry out to you “Violence!” and will you not save? 3 Why do you show me iniquity, and look at perversity? For destruction and violence are before me. There is strife, and contention rises up. 4 Therefore the law is paralyzed, and justice never prevails; for the wicked surround the righteous; therefore justice comes out perverted.(Messianic WEB)
Habakkuk 2:1 I will stand at my watch, and set myself on the ramparts, and will look out to see what he will say to me, and what I will answer concerning my complaint.
2 The LORD answered me, “Write the vision, and make it plain on tablets, that he who runs may read it. 3 For the vision is yet for the appointed time, and it hurries toward the end, and won’t prove false. Though it takes time, wait for it; because it will surely come. It won’t delay. 4 Behold, his soul is puffed up. It is not upright in him, but the righteous will live by his faith.(Messianic WEB)
Psalm 119:TZADI(The Faith of the Righteous One)
137 You are righteous, LORD.
Your judgments are upright.
138 You have commanded your statutes in righteousness.
They are fully trustworthy.
139 My zeal wears me out,
because my enemies ignore your words.
140 Your promises have been thoroughly tested,
and your servant loves them.
141 I am small and despised.
I don’t forget your precepts.
142 Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness.
Your Torah is truth.
143 Trouble and anguish have taken hold of me.
Your commandments are my delight.
144 Your testimonies are righteous forever.
Give me understanding, that I may live.(Messianic WEB)
2 Thessalonians !:1 Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, to the assembly of the Thessalonians in God our Father, and the Lord Yeshua the Messiah: 2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Yeshua the Messiah.
3 We are bound to always give thanks to God for you, brothers,* even as it is appropriate, because your faith grows exceedingly, and the love of each and every one of you towards one another abounds; 4 so that we ourselves boast about you in the assemblies of God for your perseverance and faith in all your persecutions and in the afflictions which you endure.11 To this end we also pray always for you, that our God may count you worthy of your calling, and fulfill every desire of goodness and work of faith, with power; 12 that the name of our Lord Yeshua† may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Yeshua the Messiah.(Messianic WEB)
Luke 19:1 He entered and was passing through Jericho. 2 There was a man named Zacchaeus. He was a chief tax collector, and he was rich. 3 He was trying to see who Yeshua was, and couldn’t because of the crowd, because he was short. 4 He ran on ahead, and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was going to pass that way. 5 When Yeshua came to the place, he looked up and saw him, and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for today I must stay at your house.” 6 He hurried, came down, and received him joyfully. 7 When they saw it, they all murmured, saying, “He has gone in to lodge with a man who is a sinner.”
8 Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, half of my goods I give to the poor. If I have wrongfully exacted anything of anyone, I restore four times as much.”
9 Yeshua said to him, “Today, salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save that which was lost.”(Messianic WEB)
John Wesley’s note~Commentary for:
I The prophet complains of the violence practiced by the Jews, ver. 1-4. God foretells the punishment of it, ver. 5-11. The prophet complains of the mischief done by the Chaldeans, ver. 12-17.
Verse 1. The burden - The prophet seems to speak of these grievous things, as a burden which he himself groaned under.
Verse 4. Therefore - Because the wicked go on with impunity. The law - The whole law, moral, ceremonial, and judicial. Is slacked - Is slighted, and not observed. Go forth - From magistrates, Judges, and public officers. Doth compass about - As it were besieges, with design to oppress and ruin.
Habakkuk 2:1~4
II God answers, that the Chaldeans themselves shall at length be a prey, ver. 1-8. A woe denounced against the covetous, the oppressive, the drunkards, and idolaters, ver. 9-12.
Verse 1. Upon my watch - I will stand as a watchman on my watch- tower. He - The Lord. Reproved - Called to give an account of the mysteriousness of providence; either to satisfy doubters, or to silence quarrellers.
Verse 2. Upon tables - What was of publick concern, and therefore to be published, was anciently written or engraven upon tables, smooth stones, or wood, and then hung up in a publick place to be read. May run - That none may need to stop, but every one may plainly and clearly discern what is written.
Verse 3. At the end - When the period appointed of God shall come. Shall speak - Be accomplished, and not disappoint your expectation.
Verse 4. Which is lifted up - That proudly contests with the justice and wisdom of the Divine Providence, and provides for his own safety by his own wit. The just - The humble and upright one, who adores the depth of divine providence, and is persuaded of the truth of divine promises. Shall live - Supports himself, by a firm expectation of the deliverance of Zion.
Verse 140. Pure - Without the least mixture of falsehood.
Verse 142. Everlasting - The same in all ages and places.
Verse 143. Trouble - Outward troubles and anguish of spirit.
Verse 3. It is highly observable, that the apostle wraps up his praise of men in praise to God; giving him the glory. Your faith groweth - Probably he had heard from them since his sending the former letter. Aboundeth - Like water that overflows its banks, and yet increaseth still.
Verse 4. Which ye endure - "That ye may be accounted worthy of the kingdom."
Verse 11. All the good pleasure of his goodness - Which is no less than perfect holiness.
Verse 12. That the name - The love and power of our Lord may be glorified - Gloriously displayed in you.
Verse 1. He passed through Jericho - So that Zaccheus must have lived near the end of the town: the tree was in the town itself. And he was rich - These words seem to refer to the discourse in the last chapter, ver. 24, particularly to ver. 27. Zaccheus is a proof, that it is possible by the power of God for even a rich man to enter into the kingdom of heaven.
Verse 2. The chief of the publicans - What we would term, commissioner of the customs. A very honourable as well as profitable place.
Verse 4. And running before - With great earnestness. He climbed up - Notwithstanding his quality: desire conquering honour and shame.
Verse 5. Jesus said, Zaccheus, make haste and come down - What a strange mixture of passions must Zaccheus have now felt, hearing one speak, as knowing both his name and his heart!
Verse 7. They all murmured - All who were near: though most of them rather out of surprise than indignation.
Verse 8. And Zaccheus stood - Showing by his posture, his deliberate, purpose and ready mind, and said, Behold, Lord, I give - I determine to do it immediately.
Verse 9. He also is a son of Abraham - A Jew born, and as such has a right to the first offer of salvation.
Verse 10. Matt. xviii, 11.
11. They thought the kingdom of God - A glorious temporal kingdom, would immediately appear.

Dear Friends,
The St. Mark's 2014 stewardship campaign, called "Generations of Generosity," launched last Sunday in worship
with four generations--Ray Waite, Dan Zeller, Debbie Abbott, and Matthew Tommasino--speaking briefly about what the church means to them. It was a memorable and meaningful moment. And this Sunday, we'll hear from a most illustrious personage from our past.
It can be hard for us to admit how much trouble we have with generosity. It's a word without a specific, measurable definition. We are usually left to decide for ourselves if we are being generous or not. This is complicated even further when we encounter Bishop Richard Schnase's term Extravagant Generosity. It may seem foreign, inappropriate, or outside our bailiwick--especially because many of us are taught to avoid extravagance as prideful or wasteful or at least unnecessary.
Ironically, the fact that Extravagant Generosity seems almost irrational is exactly the reason why it is one of the practices of "fruitful churches," and "fruitful living" (more Schnase terms). It seems irrational because it is an authentic and most-appropriate response to something we can only begin to grasp--the unfathomable depth and breadth of God's grace in our lives. By practicing extravagant generosity, we show ourselves and others that God is present for all of us, here and now.
-----
Also on Sunday, we will celebrate All-Saints Day. Everyone attending will have the chance to light a candle in memory of someone important to them. We will share communion, and remember those members of St. Mark's who have passed away in the last year. After worship, we will dedicate new plaques in the Memorial Garden.
Are you and avid video-gamer? Have you never played a video game, but are curious about them? Youth Director Spencer Topham recently told me that the heavily-advertised new video game "Grand Theft Auto 5" generated more than $1 billion in sales in its first three days of release! We're talking big business.
On Sunday after worship and our Memorial Garden dedication, Spencer will lead a discussion about current video games, and their non-technological counterpart, good old board games--which are enjoying a renaissance. If you want to know more about games and gaming, plan to stay for a bit. All are invited!
See you in church.
Craig

Or maybe you have a friend who is grieving and you don't know how to help them through this season. You are not alone with your pain and your questions. Grief is tough - and even tougher when it seems that no one wants to see it, acknowledge it, or talk about it.
Come for a conversation, facilitated by Mary Evelyn Harris, Marriage and Family Therapist. Grief can be a gift when we fully mourn in safety, in truth, and with hope. Come and let others support you on your journey to discover your unique path to good grief.

Puzzled By Video Games
As we approach the holiday season many of you will be receiving Christmas wish lists from kids, grand kids, nieces, and nephews which will contain requests for strange and confusing items from Pokemon to Xboxes and Nvidia cards to Steam Keys.
These, and many other items like them are part of the $10 billion video gaming industry, and they are a part of many people's everyday lives.
In order to help you better understand games and the people that play them, as well to help you make wise purchases for the gamers in your lives, St. Mark's Youth Director and life-long gamer, Spencer Topham, will be hosting a special info session after worship on Sunday, November 3 in the Social Hall.
Join us for a brief overview of gaming terms and culture, upcoming game and hardware releases, info on game ratings systems and sources of gaming information, as well as tips on effective ways to engage with gaming youth.
And as a bonus Spencer will talk a bit about one of his favorite topics, board and table-top gaming, for families interested in starting their own family game nights at home.
Bluegrass Concert
A Bluegrass Concert is scheduled for Sunday, November 17, 2013, 4:30 p.m. in the St. Mark's United Methodist sanctuary.
What is "bluegrass music"? It's a form of American roots music, a sub genre of country music and is inspired by music of Appalachia. It has mixed roots in Irish, Scottish, Welsh, and English traditional music and was also later influenced by music of African Americans through the incorporation of jazz elements.
Bring your family and friends to hear old favorites and some new "bluegrass" music performed by San Diego's best bluegrass musicians. The Youth will be serving dinner after the concert.
