PREPARING TAXES is a waste of humanity.
I can handle paying them since we need to fund the country. But can't someone invent a better way to figure out who owes what?
By "someone," I don't mean a lawyer or a Koch brother or an oilman.
How about a railroad man? Rick Stones.
Or someone who respects dirt? Gary Tranbarger or Dave Rock.
Or someone who makes excellent peanut butter cookies? Bette Tranbarger, Linda Miller, or my Mom.
Sunday's session:
Paul, for better or worse
Sunday
We're launching a 4-week series about teachings of Paul. Some teachings that make sense to most folks today, and some that don't. Up first, guest discussion leader Rick Stones.
Session topic, "We're saved. Count on Jesus for that."
Bible passage: Romans 4:1-3; 5:1-11
Romans 4: Abraham’s faith was credited as righteousness
1 So what are we going to say? Are we going to find that Abraham is our ancestor on the basis of genealogy? 2 Because if Abraham was made righteous because of his actions, he would have had a reason to brag, but not in front of God. 3 What does the scripture say? Abraham had faith in God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.[a][Footnotes:
Romans 4:3 Gen 15:6]
5: Therefore, we have peace with God
1 Therefore, since we have been made righteous through his faithfulness,[a] we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 We have access by faith into this grace in which we stand through him, and we boast in the hope of God’s glory. 3 But not only that! We even take pride in our problems, because we know that trouble produces endurance, 4 endurance produces character, and character produces hope. 5 This hope doesn’t put us to shame, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.
6 While we were still weak, at the right moment, Christ died for ungodly people. 7 It isn’t often that someone will die for a righteous person, though maybe someone might dare to die for a good person. 8 But God shows his love for us, because while we were still sinners Christ died for us. 9 So, now that we have been made righteous by his blood, we can be even more certain that we will be saved from God’s wrath through him. 10 If we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son while we were still enemies, now that we have been reconciled, how much more certain is it that we will be saved by his life? 11 And not only that: we even take pride in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, the one through whom we now have a restored relationship with God.[Footnotes:

WANTED: THE BIBLE ON TV. If we look hard enough, we can find Bible teachings in some fun places. Like reruns of "The Andy Griffith Show," starring Andy Griffith as Sheriff Andy Taylor and Don Knotts as Deputy Barney Fife. Photo by Rogers & Cowan, Beverly Hills-publicity agency/Wikimedia.
Theology of Sheriff Andy Taylor
[This article was my blog post for today. I thought it might appeal to some in RezChat. Most of us are old enough to remember the show before the reruns.]
IT SHOULDN’T HAVE SURPRISED ME, but it did. Of all the blog articles I’ve written, the one most often repinned on the social media site Pinterest is The theology of Deputy Barney Fife.
I wrote that thing on a whim after a random thought left me wondering what I would think of Jesus’s famous Sermon on the Mount if he had a mouse-squealer of a voice like Barney Fife.
For the sake of Pinterest fans who might be interested in how Sheriff Andy Taylor might react or relate to selected Bible passages, here are a few matches that come to mind.
James 3:16, Whenever you’re trying to look better than others…things fall apart and everyone ends up at the others’ throats.
Sheriff Andy Taylor: Well Gomer, Barney’s been bitten by the green-eyed monster.
Genesis 39:7, Potiphar’s wife soon began to look at him lustfully. “Come and sleep with me,” she demanded.
Sheriff Andy Taylor: Well, would it kill the whim if I just take a shower and put on some clean socks and underwear?
Matthew 26:52, “Put away your sword,” Jesus told him. “Those who use the sword will die by the sword.”
Sheriff Andy Taylor: When a man carries a gun all the time, the respect he thinks he’s gettin’ might really be fear. So I don’t carry a gun because I don’t want the people of Mayberry to fear a gun. I’d rather they would respect me.
Song of Songs 1:12-13, When my King-Lover lay down beside me, my fragrance filled the room. His head resting between my breasts—the head of my lover was a sachet of sweet myrrh.
Sheriff Andy Taylor: Nature’s been good to you. I mean real, real, real good. I can’t remember when I’ve seen nature spend as much time on one person.
Luke 16:10, If you’re not honest in small jobs,
who will put you in charge of the store?
Sheriff Andy Taylor [singing to tune of Clementine]: …Oh my Barney
Oh my Barney
had a jail but couldn’t lock it
had one bullet for his pistol
had to keep it in his pocket.

Class elections
IN JUST ONE MORE WEEK, at the Second Sunday Social, we'll be discussing if not settling on class officers for the next year.
Class leader Bill Fitzherbert has asked that if any of you are willing to lead any of the teams for the next class year, which begins on March 1, please let us know.
Terry Bahadur is tossing his hat in the ring for Class leader.
If you're ready, willing, and able to help lead a team or even simply serve as a team member, hit the Reply button on this email and send me a note. I'll pass it on to Bill. Or you can corner him at church.
Gary Tranbarger made a pass at abbreviating the team leader job descriptions. I've tried to pull together what Gary suggested along with a couple of notes from others and a few thoughts of my own.
Team leaders serve for 12 months, beginning on March 1.
Here's what we have as of this draft:
RezChat Bible Study mission statement:
Build a Christian community where non-religious and nominally religious people are becoming deeply committed Christians by studying the Bible, discussing their questions about the Christian faith, and putting their faith into action.
Class leader, Bill Fitzherbert
[Gary T. suggests dropping one line item about making sure team leaders are doing their job. Steve would like to suggest it would be helpful to keep some version of this so someone maintains general oversight of the class. See the following suggestion:
1. Monitor team leaders and arrange to help any who are having trouble fulfilling their ministry responsibilities.]
2. Either lead or arrange for someone else to lead the classes opening each Sunday: welcome, introductions, prayer requests, praises, prayer. Then turn session over to discussion leader.
3. Arrange to send class e-mail updates about general class news and upcoming events
Class treasurer: Linda Miller
[Gary T. suggested making this a separate team. Actually, it has been, I think. We’ve just gotten in the habit of keeping Linda Miller and Tim Edwards as the co-treasurers because they both have their names on the bank account, I think dating back to when Tim was class leader for a year.]
Curriculum team, Steve Miller and Cris Bahadur
1. Create a curriculum track of lesson topics for 12 months
2. Arrange for discussion leaders to direct each class session
3. Survey the class at least once a year for evaluation and for ideas about how to make the sessions more meaningful
4. Create an atmosphere that encourages everyone to participate in class
5. Find ways to engage the interest of people
6. Try to make sure everyone sees how the study topic applies to our lives today
Publicity team, Tim Edwards
1. Update slides for presentation to run before and after church.
2. Each year discuss the following:
• Explore ways to make everyone in the church aware of the RezChat Bible study class
• Keep the RezChat promotional info on the church web site up to date
• Invite promotional ideas from others in the class
Hospitality team, Karen Fitzherbert
1. Fill out the attendance book
2. Have first-time guests provide contact information
3. Send first-time visitors a card or e-mail
4. Contact class members who have been missing a week or two when no one knows why they have been absent
5. Contact class members who have been missing for an extended time
6. Direct the signups for Sunday morning chewables and café
[Gary T. suggested combining Social and Mission teams. But the current Social and Mission team leaders prefer the separation and are willing to continue for another year. Linda Miller likes working with the social side of things. Lisa Rock prefers the mission. With that in mind, I adjusted the team descriptions, following Gary’s advice for the content, but separating the responsibilities into 2 teams.]
Social team, Linda Miller
1. Plan each Second Sunday Social
[Steve would also suggest:
2. Plan other social events throughout the year, as the class shows interest]
Mission team, Lisa and Dave Rock
1. Schedule class to participate in one Mega Mission Project together
[Steve would suggest adding 2 more:
2. Arrange for the class to prepare and serve a meal at Central United Methodist Church as the schedules allow
3. Plan other mission events, as the class shows interest]
I don't do numbers very well. So wish me luck as I try to organize a wheelbarrow of them for the CPA.
