Dear Resurrection Family,
I have some fun and exciting things to share with you today, including a cool picture I received from Judson Studios, a cruise on the Journey’s of Paul, our new youth CD, an opportunity for you to honor your mom by sending her pic and having it show up on the video screen, and more.
This weekend I’m preaching on Three Driven Men – men that Jesus encountered in his ministry who were each driven by something that led to them missing God’s will for their lives, and tragic consequences; yet to each, Jesus offered a second chance. As a part of this we’ll look at personality types and the Enneagram – a personality profile tool used by some to understand both the potential strengths as well as the possible dark side to their personalities. I believe this sermon will speak to everyone, but particularly to men, as we consider the question, “what drives us?”
Next weekend, May 8/9, is Mother’s Day Weekend and my sermon will focus on moms we read about in the gospels. We’re going to celebrate Moms in a host of other ways as well – we’ll have a photo booth in the narthex so that you can have pictures taken with your mom or your kids. We’ll have breakfast treats served all morning. We’re also including a montage of pictures of mothers on the video screens at various points in the service. The photo montage will be different at each campus and each service. Please send photos of your mom (dad’s you might want to do this for your wives) to mothersday@cor.org and be sure to tell us which campus and which service you plan to attend next weekend. We’ll try to get all of the pictures up on the screen at some point during the service. Photos must be submitted by this Sunday, May 1.
If you're looking for a special Mother's Day treat, The Leawood Stage Company will present the musical, My Fair Lady, in the Leawood sanctuary on Thursday, May 5 - Saturday, May 7, at 7:30 pm each night. The production is directed by Kevin Bogan, our traditional music worship leader. Tickets are $10 for adults/$5 for students and those 65 and older, and you may purchase them in the Narthex this weekend.
I want to apologize to parents of small children. Last weekend I preached on the “sinful woman” – a prostitute to whom Jesus offered grace and compassion. We also talked about human trafficking and women who have been caught in, and escaped from, prostitution today. This was uncomfortable for some of our parents who had small children with them in worship. When addressing sensitive topics like this my aim is to give a heads-up about this the week before (which I did but was not as clear as I should have been). I announced at the beginning of the 9 am service the topic so parents could take their children to Sunday School instead of worship, but I forgot to do so at the other services. If you were with your children during worship and felt uncomfortable with the topic, please accept my apologies. These topics do not come up often in sermons, but I’ll give you advance notice next time, and I’ll let our campus pastors know in advance as well.
Speaking of our children’s ministry, you can play a part in helping kids explore their faith this summer by volunteering in our Children’s Ministry. No experience is necessary – just be ready to have some fun with the kids. We are looking for parents, youth and other adults who would be willing to serve on several weekends or at one of our summer camps. To learn more, visit our children’s ministry website: www.cor.org/leawood/kidscorand click on the "volunteer" tab on the left.
This Sunday morning at the Leawood campus come to worship hungry! We’ll have Chris Cakes pancakes and sausage for breakfast before and after worship. Proceeds from the breakfast will support our youth summer mission trip to Honduras where our teens will help with the construction of our partner churches and assist in leading Vacation Bible School for children. Purchase tickets in the Narthex from one of our youth.
Inside the new sanctuary the sheetrock is going up on the interior “sails” – the tall vertical roof elements. The exterior glass on the sanctuary will be completed in the next two weeks. This week Judson Studios sent me this picture of 15 of the 160 stained glass window panels as they are preparing to complete them. These panels are from the lower center section of the window. Each piece of glass is carefully inspected on light tables to ensure it works with the other pieces around it and that its light transmission is correct before the windows are leaded.

This week our Leawood youth bands released their first CD called BLOOM. I’m listening to it as I’m writing this e-note. It is AWESOME!!! These youth are amazingly talented. You can download it on iTunes by clicking here, or purchase it in the Well this weekend. It would make a great Mother’s Day gift. If you heard these songs on the radio you would never know this was not a professional band that has been playing for years. Congratulations to Cory Ryan and our youth! I am so proud of you. This Saturday night the band will debut their album in concert in the Student Center at 6:30 pm.
This coming Tuesday night I will speak at the Central Library of the Kansas City Public Library, 14 W. 10th Street downtown KC as part of their “Cradle of Entrepreneurs” series. Crosby Kemper III will conduct the conversation and we’ll talk about everything from how the church started, to leadership lessons, to our campuses and the new Leawood sanctuary. This is a great opportunity to bring a friend who is not involved in church. RSVP at 816-701-3407 or online here.
In the fall of 2017 I’ll lecture on my book, The Call: The Life and Message of the Apostle Paul on an Educational Opportunities Journey’s of Paul Mediterranean cruise that includes stops at the amazing archaeological sites at Ephesus, Athens, Corinth and Rome as well as the first century Roman ruins of Pompeii. The trip is on the newly refurbished Jewel of the Seas, part of the Royal Caribbean cruise line. It also includes plenty of sightseeing with stops at the islands of Mykonos, Santorini and Sicily. Sign-ups will begin a week from today – Friday, May 6. This is not just a Church of the Resurrection trip, but is a part of EO’s national offering of biblical trips and will be offered to United Methodists across the country. Resurrection members are receiving a one-week advance opportunity to sign up before registration begins nationally. Official registration for everyone else starts a week later. This will be an amazing trip! Click here to read the brochure and, if you are interested, plan to register early. EO anticipates that this cruise will sell out.
On a personal note, tonight I’m babysitting Stella for the first time alone. I’m a bit nervous but mostly excited. LaVon is out of town visiting her family in Illinois and Stella’s parents are heading out for a date. Watch for a pic or two on Facebook tonight – my page is an organizational page you can find and like by clicking here.
Looking forward to seeing you this weekend in worship as we talk about three driven men and what drives each of us!
