"Meditation – 60 Days of Prayer" from The Upper Room for Friday, 12 August 2016

"Meditation – 60 Days of Prayer" from The Upper Room for Friday, 12 August 2016
As we continue to use the prayer Dr. Scott Hughes offered us on Wednesday
, we are also invited to consider the following “prayer action.”
The first step to remedy our fears of engaging in difficult conversations is to view conflict as advantageous. When we encounter conflict, we have the opportunity for growth and learning.
A second step is drop the illusion that unity will be the result. What if instead of seeking unity, we as the church, pursued a culture of listening that demonstrates compassion and mercy? In the Gospel, Jesus frequently asked, “What do you want me to do for you?” He also made it clear that his followers would be known by the intentional way they put their love into action (John13:34).
In your next conversation, be intentional about listening (which is much more than simply waiting your turn to speak!). Say as little as possible. Listen deeply to the other person. What does he/she need you to hear and understand? Compassionate listening will allow you to discover how God would have you to pray for this person. Then, commit to praying for them in your personal prayer time.
