Redondo Beach, California, United States' First United Methodist Church eNews: "Kids' Performance after worship & All-Circle Potluck next week!" "This Sunday: Kids' Musical after 10:30 service!" for Thursday, 11 August 2016
From Pastor Molly: Overcoming FearAs I write this, I'm listening to the beautiful voices of our young children, rehearsing the show our BeachFaith Kids Performing Arts Camp will stage this Sunday. It's been fun to hear the strains of beloved summer songs all week, during camp.
The show they're rehearsing has a simple plot: it's a story of overcoming fear. Even on a beautiful summer day, sometimes it takes courage to put your toes in the water. With help from friends and encouragement, it's possible overcome your fears.
This is one of the things we do well as a church. We encourage and support one another as we tiptoe into deeper discipleship. As we wade into the waters of following Jesus, we don't do it alone, but in a community of care and support. Jesus asks us to do things that sometimes look scary from the outside: care for strangers, feed the hungry, even love our enemies. But we do it together, and it's good.
I hope you'll come check out the show on Sunday. It's a fun little story of a day at the beach, and our kids will make you smile as they sing songs you know and love. Maybe their story will even make you more ready to try something you find scary.
Grace and peace,[Pastor Molly Vetter]

Revelation 22:1-7
"River of Life"
Scripture Text: Revelation 22:1 Next the angel showed me the river of the water of life, sparkling like crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb. 2 Between the main street and the river was the Tree of Life producing twelve kinds of fruit, a different kind every month; and the leaves of the tree were for healing the nations — 3 no longer will there be any curses. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will worship him; 4 they will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. 5 Night will no longer exist, so they will need neither the light of a lamp nor the light of the sun, because Adonai, God, will shine upon them. And they will reign as kings forever and ever.
6 Then he said to me, “These words are true and trustworthy: Adonai, God of the spirits of the prophets, sent his angel to show his servants the things that must happen soon.”
7 “Look! I am coming very soon. Blessed is the person who obeys the words of the prophecy written in this book!”
John Wesley's Notes-Commentary for Revelation 22:1-7
Verse 1
[1] And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.
And he showed me a river of the water of life — The ever fresh and fruitful effluence of the Holy Ghost. See Ezekiel 47:1-12; where also the trees are mentioned which "bear fruit every month," that is, perpetually.
Proceeding out of the throne of God, and of the Lamb — "All that the Father hath," saith the Son of God, "is mine;" even the throne of his glory.
Verse 2
[2] In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.
In the midst of the street — Here is the paradise of God, mentioned, Revelation 2:7.
Is the tree of life — Not one tree only, but many.
Every month — That is, in inexpressible abundance. The variety, likewise, as well as the abundance of the fruits of the Spirit, may be intimated thereby.
And the leaves are for the healing of the nations — For the continuing their health, not the restoring it; for no sickness is there.
Verse 3
[3] And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him:
And there shall be no more curse — But pure life and blessing; every effect of the displeasure of God for sin being now totally removed.
But the throne of God and the Lamb shall be in it — That is, the glorious presence and reign of God.
And his servants — The highest honour in the universe.
Shalt worship him — The noblest employment.
Verse 4
[4] And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads.
And shall see his face — Which was not granted to Moses. They shall have the nearest access to, and thence the highest resemblance of, him. This is the highest expression in the language of scripture to denote the most perfect happiness of the heavenly state, 1 John 3:2.
And his name shall be on their foreheads — Each of them shall be openly acknowledged as God's own property, and his glorious nature most visibly shine forth in them.
And they shall reign — But who are the subjects of these kings? The other inhabitants of the new earth. For there must needs be an everlasting difference between those who when on earth excelled in virtue, and those comparatively slothful and unprofitable servants, who were just saved as by fire. The kingdom of God is taken by force; but the prize is worth all the labour. Whatever of high, lovely, or excellent is in all the monarchies of the earth is all together not a grain of dust, compared to the glory of the children of God. God "is not ashamed to be called their God, for whom he hath prepared this city." But who shall come up into his holy place? "They who keep his commandments," verse 14. Revelation 22:14
Verse 5
[5] And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.
And they shall reign for ever and ever — What encouragement is this to the patience and faithfulness of the saints, that, whatever their sufferings are, they will work out for them "an eternal weight of glory!" Thus ends the doctrine of this Revelation, in the everlasting happiness of all the faithful. The mysterious ways of Providence are cleared up, and all things issue in an eternal Sabbath, an everlasting state of perfect peace and happiness, reserved for all who endure to the end.
Verse 6
[6] And he said unto me, These sayings are faithful and true: and the Lord God of the holy prophets sent his angel to shew unto his servants the things which must shortly be done.
And he said to me — Here begins the conclusion of the book, exactly agreeing with the introduction, (particularly verses 6, 7, 10, Revelation 22:6,7,10 with chap. i. 1, 3,) Revelation 1:1,3 and giving light to the whole book, as this book does to the whole scripture.
These sayings are faithful and true — All the things which you have heard and seen shall be faithfully accomplished in their order, and are infallibly true.
The Lord, the God of the holy prophets — Who inspired and authorised them of old. Hath now sent me his angel, to show his servants - By thee.
The things which must be done shortly — Which will begin to be performed immediately.
Verse 7
[7] Behold, I come quickly: blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophecy of this book.
Behold, I come quickly — Saith our Lord himself, to accomplish these things.
Happy is he that keepeth — Without adding or diminishing, verses 18, 19, Revelation 22:18,19 the words of this book.

News From Our Members
This next week, actually Friday, August 26, 2016 at 11:00 AM, our church will be the location of a Memorial Service for Mary Emerson. It's a long story, but my late wife, Ada Belle, and I have known Mary for many years. We usually sat in the second row, left during Worship and Mary did too. Mary loved my Beach Cities Symphony Concerts and after giving up driving, she organized a special van trip and brought seven or eight neighbor residents to each concert. I remember one time there were five and the van didn't show up so I and members of the orchestra drove the individuals to their homes so they wouldn't need a Taxi. Upon Mary's passing, her estate has helped the orchestra and the first concert of our 67th season will be dedicated in her memory...

SUNDAY ANOTHER POT-LUCK! Everyone is always welcome at these monthly luncheons following Sunday Worship, approximately at noon. Just bring a dish to the kitchen, join in the line selecting your favorite foods, sit down with a friend or stranger, enjoy this visit, have desert and it all will be followed by our young people showing photos and telling about their recent mission trip to Baja California, Mexico. It will be fun for all and all are invited. Didn't bring a dish? Come anyway and next time make up for it. We always seem to have plenty left over.
Last Sunday, as Pastor Molly Vetter spoke of Jesus being baptized by John in the Jordan river and God saying He is well pleased, I felt the same way. That afternoon we had a street block party in Hermosa Beach for my son celebrating his 70th birthday. There were over eighty neighbors, friends and relatives there and I, indeed, was well pleased and very proud. Isn't it great that Pastor Molly so often preaches about scripture in ways that are pertinent to our personal lives? I am proud of her, our staff, our church and our congregation. I hope you are too. (Just imagine having a 70 year old son!)
Visiting with Joe Zeiler after VBS, Vacation Bible School, he was saying how wonderful it had been and he said his entire career as a teacher, principal, etc. had been to lead youngsters and here in this case the leaders were young Grace Martens and Bryan Hwang and all he had to do was follow their orders. How life turns around sometimes. Thank you, God, for all these wonderful young leaders at our church. As Pastor Molly says, “May it be so.”
I watched people bringing boxes and bags of stuff to store in the basement beneath our Choir Room for the fall Rummage Sale. In talking with some women who operate this huge activity, they said they like to sort it out early and appreciate your donations now. If too much comes in at the last minute it makes their work even more difficult. They sort, classify it with other donations of the same ilk, hang it up and get ready for the big deal. You'll help by donating now, either Sundays or at the office.

Coming this Fall: Better Together
It's a church theme, a sermon series and more! All fall, we will be celebrating how we're Better Together, remembering how God works in the lives of communities and in our relationships. As the writer of Ecclesiastes said, "And though one might prevail against another, two will withstand one. A threefold cord is not quickly broken." (Ecclesiastes 4:12)
It goes much deeper, too--we come to know about God because of the people in whom we have seen God at work. Our faith and love make sense when we live them out with other people here on earth.
There's much more to say, and we hope you'll be a part of this whole meaningful season.
Book Club: Our next book is a work of fiction titled "The Language of Flowers: A Novel" by Vanessa Diffenbaugh. We will meet Tuesday, September 27 at 7pm in May Day Parlor.

Hillsong Church is a Pentecostal megachurch based in Sydney, Australia. Founded by Brian and Bobbie Houston in August of 1983, the church grew to the point where the word “megachurch” is utterly redefined by them, with campuses in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Newcastle, Gold Coast and Noosa. In addition, they have international churches in London, Bermondsey (Greater London), Oxford, Guildford, Kent and Newcastle (United Kingdom), Cape Town and Pretoria (South Africa), Kiev (Ukraine), Paris, Lyon and Marseille (France), Konstanz and Duesseldorf (Germany), Stockholm, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Barcelona, Moscow, Buenos Aires, São Paulo, Los Angeles, New York, New Jersey and 3 campuses scheduled to open this year in Arizona.
The band Hillsong United was formed in 1998 from close friends within the Hillsong youth ministry (called “Powerhouse Youth”). So many songs were being written within the youth ministry that it was suggested they make an album. The songs One and Everyday were recorded and released with the annual Hillsong worship album in 1999. They both achieved gold sales status in Australia, and the band has gone on to win five Dove Awards in 2014 and were nominated for an American Music Award and won the Billboard Music Award Top Christian Artist in 2015. Their song Oceans was released in 2013 and was certified Platinum – 1,000,000 copies sold.
This Sunday we are being serenaded by our own Tuuholoaki Family Singers. The Tuuholoaki family hails originally from Tonga, and, following in the great Polynesian tradition, has so many singers in the family that they create their own choir. They often sing music from the Tongan tradition, and it’s a treat to have them bring their musical heritage to us.
Next week, we’ll be joined by the McCandless family singers. Rick is a leader and soloist in the tenor section of our choir, and his family, who will show up periodically to serenade the Shared Bread diners, sing as well as most professional ensembles and even have a couple of in-house arrangers. They’ve also been with us during the Christmas season, and in past years were the backbone of the handbell choir.
