A Pastoral Letter from the Cabinet
Dear Sisters and Brothers of the California-Pacific Conference,
Grace and peace to you in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus the Christ. We, the members of the California-Pacific Cabinet, write to you today as one voice. We write to you as leaders committed to consistency and continuity in a time of unexpected change. To a person, we your Cabinet, have been excited about this coming quadrennium that holds so much promise for vital ministry. Our confidence and hope is born out of the work we have all done the past four years under the leadership of Bishop Minerva G. Carcaño to right the course of our Conference stewardship and structure. Under her tenure, the Conference budget has finished in the black the past four years, apportionments have risen each year and this past year, for the first time in many, the California-Pacific Conference fulfilled its connectional apportionment giving at 100%. In addition, we have streamlined our ministry structure and fully staffed the Conference Connectional Ministry team with called and skilled leaders. George Bernard Shaw once said, “Those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.” Bishop Carcaño has changed our minds as a Conference. We have moved from a mindset of scarcity to abundance and uncertainty to vibrancy.
Bishop Minerva G. Carcaño has been a leader who is a living witness to a deep faith in Jesus Christ. She has been a tireless driving force for excellence and Christian accountability. She has been a prophetic voice of change in the church, and inclusiveness in our communities. We thank God for her ministry in our midst and ask God’s blessing on her and the California-Nevada Conference she goes to lead. As she leaves, we her Cabinet, share the conviction that the challenges she put before us, and the standards she lifted up to us, will not fade. We are committed to continue working with the gifted clergy and lay leadership of the California-Pacific Conference to keep the wind strong in the sails of positive change here in our Conference.
Our itineracy system requires us to be ready for change, and our Bishops, like all clergy, have offered themselves to be ready when called. As Bishop Carcaño moves to her next call, Bishop Grant Hagiya arrives to lead us. We trust that God will now use the unique gifts and graces of Bishop Hagiya to bless the California-Pacific Conference. We, as his Cabinet, will partner with him to continue to move our ministry into new places, identifying new leaders, and creating new possibilities for God’s transformative work in the name of Jesus Christ.
We pray you will join us in this unified spirit as together we prepare for another year “Inspiring the world, as passionate followers of Jesus Christ; so all may experience God’s life giving love.”
The California-Pacific Conference Cabinet
Rev. John Farley, Dean, South District Superintendent
Rev. Jan Wiley, Secretary, East District Superintendent
Rev. Se Hee Han, Hawaii District Superintendent
Rev. Jim Powell, North District Superintendent
Rev. Mark Nakagawa, West District Superintendent
