HOLY WEEK SERVICES Palm and Passion Weekend is March 24 & 25.
We celebrate the Triumphal Entry of Jesus into Jerusalem and anticipate the events of Holy Week, which culminate in the Cross and Resurrection.
Maundy Thursday, March 29 at 7:00 PM, remembers that last supper of Jesus with his disciples, where they had their Passover Meal together and Jesus gave the Love Commandment.
Good Friday Services will be at Noon & 7PM.
Each will be based around the music of the Resurrection Symphony, Mahler’s Second Symphony and amazing words written as program notes for this performance.
Each will be about an hour and 20 minutes.
Saturday’s 5 PM Easter service will immediately follow the Kid’s Easter Egg Hunt and Party and will celebrate the Resurrection of Christ in a format that kids and families will love.
Easter Sunday Sunrise service at 6:30 AM.
Easter Services at our regular Sunday service times, 9:00 and 10:45 AM.
Pastor Brian’s Faith Works
Why we need each other’s photo… So many times we almost remember each other’s names. Like who’s that guy that has the cute kids who talks a lot? He’s really nice and worth knowing and everything. Has a cool accent? I know, let’s look in the directory. Not here. Not here. Not here. There he is! Drew Davis! I knew he looked familiar! But if you are not in the directory, we would have to ask everybody in the church to find you. We need you. You are a part of this community, whether you are an official church member or somebody who shows up. We need you. Really.
Go to our website at hopeumc.com and push the directory button. Sign up. Show up. You’re in the directory. I will be so grateful
Pastor Brian Kent
HOPE NEEDS YOUR PICTURE
Do you still need to have your picture taken for the Church Directory? Have you been wondering who the new face sitting in church with you on Saturday night or Sunday morning is? Have you asked yourself who was that person you met at Gathering Spot between Sunday Services? Pictures in the directory can answer these questions and more. What a wonderful way to remember all the people that come to church every weekend. Remember you do not need to be a member to have your picture taken and included in the directory. Please sign up through the church’s website www.hopeumc.com, bottom right hand corner (in the blue area), click on Directory Photo Sessions and sign up for one of the available times on the days listed below:
Thursday, March 8: 12:10-8:50 (last session is booked at 7:50) Saturday, March 10: 10:00-6:40 (last session is booked at 5:40) Sunday, March 11: 10:00-6:20 (last session is booked at 5:20) Monday, March 12: 12:00-8:20 (last session is booked at 7:20) Tuesday, March 13: 12:00-8:40 (last session is booked at 7:40) Wednesday, March 14: 12:00-8:40 (last session is booked at 7:40) Sunday, March 18: 10:00-6:20 (last session is booked at 5:20) 3 MISSIONS CORNER
“The beginning and end of every solution is the love of God lived through the people of God.” — Feb. 25 worship bulletin, Hope UMC What do you think about that quotation? Does it describe, for you, our calling as the church and as individuals? How are we, individually and collectively, living out the love of God in our own lives, in our nation, and in our world? The Missions/Outreach Committee is one avenue through which our church seeks to respond to God’s calling to us. Thank you so much to everyone who has responded to our Mission Moments in worship, where each month we highlight a special mission/ministry area we support. February’s focus was on disaster relief, for which we received over $1700, and can still receive more donations now to send to the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). Hope members are planning their yearly trip to Salt Lake City the week of April 15, where they will put together and pack health kits to be distributed through UMCOR West. There is still room for others to go on this trip, please contact Cindy Gleason by March 14 if you wish to be part of that missions team. Also please watch for a list of needed health kit supplies to bring to church for Sunday School children to pack for the team to take to Salt Lake City; any questions contact Carrie Jacques or Cindy Gleason. Thank you for food donations for the Good Neighbor Center which are brought to the new food cart. Please note: expired food or opened containers cannot be used. Please check the date on canned goods and refrain from donating items that have been opened, are perishable, or are expired. Thank you so much for being part of God’s outreaching love in the world through your generous support of Hope UMC’s missions activities! You are making a difference, in ways large and small, for the good of those we seek to serve, thank you! (Carol Millspaugh, Missions chair)
FOR OUR TROOPS
The Mission/Outreach committee is sponsoring a collection of items for troops deployed to Baghdad. The time to collect these items is short — just a few weeks. Put the items in the marked tub on the patio near the food cart. Thank you! • Full size shampoo • Full size body wash • Small hand lotion or moisturizer • Quality disposable razors • Unscented solid deodorant If you would like to help pack the boxes for shipping on April 7th, please contact Norma Dahlvig at 858-484-3397.
DISASTER RELIEF THANKS YOU!
Thank your for your donations to the Monthly Mission for Hope Disaster Relief Team. We will be sending over $2,000 to UMCOR-West to buy supplies. Starting Sat April 7th, and continuing throughout April, we will be collecting supplies and health kits to be forwarded to UMCOR-West.
A health kit is 1 hand towel, 1 washcloth, 1 large comb, 1 packaged toothbrush, 1 bar of soap (non-moisturizing soap), 1 nail file or clippers, and 6 regular sized bandages. More information will be in the April TOH.
PATIO BENCHES
Three of the eight patio benches have now been purchased for memorial tributes. We want to remind the congregation that the benches can also be purchased for honorariums. A cement bench is a lasting way to honor or memorialize your loved ones, and the only means at Hope of having the name of the honoree on a publicly displayed plaque. For more information or to reserve a bench, contact Terry Badger

MUSIC NOTES
This Month in worship ... Lots of Music! The choirs just finished an awesome concert with the Rancho Bernardo High School choral department on March 4, and it was so much fun! On March 10, the SNA band will feature Marcia Roberts singing, “I Hope You Dance,” and Wendy Kallen & Bill Mingst singing “Born Again.” On the 11th, come hear Montage, our wonderful women’s ensemble singing, “Bow the Knee.” The Hope Ringers bell choir has been rehearsing a challenging piece called, “Festive Rondo,” which they will share in worship on March 18. Then Holy Week begins! The SNA band is working on a new song for Palm Saturday, “Amazing Grace, My Chains Are Gone.” The Axios Youth Choir and Joyful Noise Children’s Choir will join forces and sing together on Palm Saturday and Sunday, March 24/25, while bringing in the palms! The Holy Week Choir will sing all through Holy Week: Three pieces on Palm Sunday, featuring Beth Jones on piano, guest organist Susan Caudill, and a string trio, closing with “Lacrymosa” from Mozart’s Requiem. Hear a wonderful piece called “O Wondrous Love” on Maundy Thursday. The Choir will sing four pieces on Easter morning ... 2 pieces with the Select Brass quintet, a beautiful arrangement of “How Great Thou Art,” and one other very fun song called, “The Stone is Rolled Away.” We will end with the Hallelujah Chorus, inviting anyone who has sung it to come join the choir and sing along! We will have music for you! After Holy Week and an invitation ... Finally on April 8, the 10:45 Voices of Hope Choir will finish the Lenten cantata, Our Father, with the final movement. Love to sing? Play an instrument? Love to bake, usher, take pictures, or help with receptions? Come! We invite you to join the music ministry! A Shared Stage became a Shared Community ...
A HUGE THANK YOU to everyone involved! The March 4 choral concert was fabulous! A big thank you goes out to our “Loaves and Fishes Kitchen”! Dee Tenney, Suzanne Vigilia, and members of the concert series committee were tremendous in preparing food for 200 guests! There were over 300 people at the concert, and it was grand to see our community come together through music ... Thank you to all the choirs, Hope staff, Lea Schoenwetter, the concert committee, and everyone who helped make this concert possible, successful, and memorable! What an incredible church family we have! One more short-term choir opportunity! Come sing with the CCS choir for 5 weeks, April 26-June 3. This choir will learn 6-7 songs, written and conducted by the guest composers of our June festival — Lloyd Larson, Joel Raney, and Joseph Martin. You will receive music and a practice CD, you rehearse for 5 weeks, and you will get to sing in the concert on June 3 with our guests! It’s fun, inspiring, educational, and your stomach may hurt from laughing a lot ... Contact Ginny Lorenz, our choir manager, for more information. 858.354.3939

Bring your friends and neighbors — this is a community event! We welcome the donation of eggs filled with wrapped candy; bring them to the party. The fun will end in time for you to attend our casual Resurrection Saturday Family Easter service at 5:00pm in the Sanctuary. Children and youth will enjoy attending this service with their families; childcare will be provided in the Nursery for infants and toddlers.
EASTER EGGS
Spring is around the corner, which means our annual Easter Party & Egg Hunt will be Saturday, March 31. This is always great fun for our children and a wonderful outreach event for your friends and family who do not attend Hope. However, in order to make this party a success we need donations of plastic eggs filled with wrapped candy.
Please bring your donations (marked “Church Egg Hunt”) to church on weekends or to the church office during the week.
Thank you in advance for your help! 5

HOPE UMC BIBLE STUDY
Living as Easter People What does it mean to be “Easter people”? How do we live that way, and is it different from normal, everyday life? Especially in a world of school shootings, combative politics, and personal challenging times, how can we live as people of the Resurrection? Like Jesus’ first disciples, how do we find a way forward even in dark times? Does Easter make a daily difference in our lives? How can it? Come be part of a short-term Bible study where we will explore how to live as Easter people in an often Good Friday world. The class will meet for four Monday afternoons from 1-2:30 in the Jones Building, watch the bulletin for more specifics.
THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!
Dear Hope Family, Thanks so much to all those donating aluminum can pop tops. Ronald McDonald House is so appreciative of every delivery I make. A few dollars at a time adds up. Please keep putting them in the box in the Narthex, or give them to me. (Cathy Steele)
