Join Us In Prayer
Typhoon Mangkhut hit the northern tip of the Philippines a few weeks ago before moving toward Hong Kong and southeast China. Dozens were killed, hundreds missing, and cities are still picking up the pieces left from the storm. Let us pray and respond to this crisis.
Northern Philippines Devastated by Typhoon
An elementary classroom flooded on the PNC campus.
Typhoon Mangkhut, the world’s most intense storm this year, hit the northern tip of the Philippines early Saturday and killed more than 80 people before moving toward Hong Kong, China, where it killed four more people. About 50 people are still missing, and the death toll could rise above 100 as search and rescue missions continue.
Winds of over 127 miles per hour and gusts of as much as 189 mph tore through the landscape. Rice and corn crops worth an estimated $177 million were destroyed, and 450 homes were damaged, with flooding in nine provinces.
The village of Ucab in the Cordillera region was hit by one of 50 landslides triggered by heavy rains. Hopes of finding survivors in the rubble faded on Monday as rescuers in the region struggled to reach dozens of people feared trapped.
Philippine Nazarene College in La Trinidad sustained serious flooding. The damage at the college and at other churches and schools is still being assessed by local Nazarene Compassionate Ministries staff.
NCM staff in the Philippines are coordinating a response in Pangasinan and Benguet with local pastors. Churches are beginning to collect supplies for neighbors in need and connecting with other local organizations to further their reach.
An assessment team is being organized to visit churches in the northernmost part of Luzon — the area most impacted by the typhoon — and they will deliver Crisis Care Kits and generators as needed.

On September 8, the Church of the Nazarene Philippines-Micronesia Field dedicated and launched the Shechem Children’s Home, the first assessment center in the Philippines for victims of Online Sexual Exploitation of Children (OSEC).
Shechem Children’s Home Opens as a Refuge for OSEC Victims
Manila, Philippines – On Saturday, September 8, 2018, leadership from the Church of the Nazarene Philippines-Micronesia Field dedicated and launched the Shechem Children’s Home. The Shechem Children’s Home represents the first assessment center in the Philippines for victims of Online Sexual Exploitation of Children (OSEC). After a time of worship, the partner organizations and Shechem staff were introduced. A Memorandum of Agreement was signed to formalize the partnership between the following organizations. The Philippines Church of the Nazarene and Nazarene Compassionate Ministries will own and administrate the home. The International Justice Mission will provide all legal counsel and protection for the children and the home, along with Trauma Informed Care training for the staff. And, the Philippines Children’s Ministries Network will provide a community social worker and additional resources for the home.
Dedication Rites being read by FSC Stephen Gualberto
The Shechem Children’s Home fills a vital gap in the process of rescuing victims of OSEC. With a staff composed of a social worker, a psychologist, a counselor, a medical doctor, and nurses, critical care can be provided to survivors while professionals assess how best to aid in the survivors’ recovery and reintegration into safe settings. Philippines-Micronesia Field Strategy Coordinator Stephen Gualberto said, “The comprehensive assessments to the child and his or her family is critical in determining the permanency plan for the child, be it reunification with relatives or reintegration through another avenue such as adoption, foster care, or independent living.
Field NCM Coordinator Leody Echavez shared about the challenges of sexual exploitation in the Philippines. “We often think of sex trafficking as adults filming videos for other adults, but this problem has taken on a new face. Now parents and relatives sell sexual videos of their own children, sometimes under a year old. Over 80% of the time it involves a direct relative.” He went on to add, “The Philippines is particularly vulnerable to OSEC, not only because of poverty levels, but also because most children speak English, and can, therefore, take instructions from predators.”
Signing of MOA between Church of the Nazarene/NCM, International Justice Mission (IJM Philippines), and Philippines Children’s Ministries Network (PCMN).
“There’s a continuum of care for victims of online sexual exploitation,” said Atty. Reynaldo Bicol Jr., Manila Field Office Director for the International Justice Mission. “The recourse now is to rescue a child and immediately bring them to a shelter, regardless of the situation. With the assessment center, our hope is that [Shechem] will serve as a model on how to properly care for children who are being rescued.”
The board and staff of Shechem ask for continued prayer as they seek physical needs for their ministry, and as they seek financial partners who are willing to participate in this valuable ministry.Read More.

Dr. Dick Eugenio continues his "The Human Jesus" series by reminding us that temptations can come from the most unexpected avenues. If Jesus was tempted like us in every way, then he too experienced the multi-faceted and multi-colored temptations of daily mundane existence that is influenced by our environments or from our minds.
The Human Jesus – Part 2: Tempted Like Us in Every Way
The writer of Hebrews is very clear: Jesus “was tempted in every way, just as we are” (4:15). The only obvious accounts of Jesus being tempted were those when he was in the wilderness, immediately after his baptism at the Jordan River, being tempted by the devil himself (Matt 4:11). However, we must recognize that the whole life of Christ is a life face-to-face with temptations. We must realize that temptations do not only take the more common obvious forms. We face temptations when we wake up in the morning, when we sit idly or busily, when we walk, when we talk, when we minister, when we ride the public transport, when we watch the television, when we go to the mall, when we order food at McDonald’s, when we give, when we plan, when we respond and react to someone or something, when we arrive home from work, when we deal with our spouses and children, up to when we lie down and close our eyes in bed. If Jesus, according to our passage, was tempted like us in every way, then he too experienced the multi-faceted and multi-colored temptations of daily mundane existence.
Temptations can come from the most unexpected avenues. It is true that temptations can come from outside. They can come from the devil, whose tricks and schemes know no limit. They can come from even your friends and colleagues when we are faced with social conformity. They can come from our boyfriends and girlfriends when they are starting to be touchy and endearing. They can come from our family members and loved ones when they begin to become hindrances to our commitment to God and his work. They can come from strangers when their dresses are quite revealing. They can come from children when they are testing our patience. They can come from non-living things, like TVs, billboards, magazines, newspapers, computers, internet, tablets, cell phones, etc. Temptations can come from anybody and anything.
But temptations can also come from within us. Being human itself, with our inherent constitution as psycho-somatic beings, can become avenues of temptation. For example, to be hungry and to thirst are a part of being human. These are good human experiences because they keep us alive. But these basic and inherently good emotions and desires can be corrupted and turned by the devil as avenues of temptations. Hunger and thirst can lead someone to steal, kill, or hurt other people. Even sexual desire is good because it is necessary for the fulfillment of God’s command to Adam and Eve to reproduce offspring (Gen 1:28). But sexual desire can become an avenue not to produce life, but actually to take life and to make the lives of others miserable. Even the experience of love, which is a reflection of God’s own nature in our human constitution, can become the source of jealousy, bitterness, envy, and even to hatred. The ability to think is also a gift of God, but it can become the source of pride, arrogance, and conflict.
So when John wrote that “Jesus Christ has come in the flesh” (1 John 4:2), or when Paul wrote that “God sent his own Son “in the likeness of sinful flesh” (Rom 8:3), it meant that Jesus fully experienced what it meant to be human, and therefore also faced the same temptations that we face daily. The writer of Hebrews wrote that in Jesus Christ, “we have one who has been tempted in every way–– just as we are” (Heb 4:15). But because of this, Jesus truly is able to “empathize with our weaknesses.” Having been tempted like the rest of us, He is able to be merciful. When He was the cross, He prayed, “Father forgive them for they do not know what they are doing” (Luke 23:34). Instead of condemning us for our sins, because He understands our human weakness, He “is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us” as our High Priest (Rom 8:34). (Rev. Dick O. Eugenio is the Academic Dean of Asia-Pacific Nazarene Theological Seminary and SDMI Field Coordinator of the Philippine-Micronesia Field.) Read More.
