Sunday's Scripture:
2 Corinthains 13:11-13
2 Corinthians 13:11 Finally, brothers, rejoice. Be perfected, be comforted, be of the same mind, live in peace, and the God of love and peace will be with you. 12 Greet one another with a holy kiss. 13 All the saints greet you.

John Wesley's Notes-Commentary:
2 Corinthians 13:11-13
Verse 11
[11] Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you.
Be perfect — Aspire to the highest degree of holiness.
Be of good comfort — Filled with divine consolation.
Be of one mind — Desire, labour, pray for it, to the utmost degree that is possible.
Verse 13
[13] All the saints salute you.
The grace — Or favour.
Of our Lord Jesus Christ — By which alone we can come to the Father.
And the love of God — Manifested to you, and abiding in you.
And the communion — Or fellowship.
Of the Holy Ghost — In all his gifts and graces. It is with great reason that this comprehensive and instructive blessing is pronounced at the close of our solemn assemblies; and it is a very indecent thing to see so many quitting them, or getting into postures of remove, before this short sentence can be ended. How often have we heard this awful benediction pronounced! Let us study it more and more, that we may value it proportionably; that we may either deliver or receive it with a becoming reverence, with eyes and hearts lifted up to God, "who giveth the blessing out of Sion, and life for evermore."

Change (What Stays the Same)
I'm excited to be here, though, because of a spirit of grace that's alive in this community, which stays the same from generation to generation.
Nowhere has that been more visible to me than in watching our confirmation students with their mentors. We are blessed to be church together, across the generations.
We are a church that really lives toward its mission--to be a church that cares as community, that learns to grow in faith, and that responds to the needs of our community and world. Our commitment to serve the hungry a meal every Wednesday has shaped us with compassion, grace and humility. Our commitment to young people and families has set our vision toward a future with hope. Our community offers care and compassion, holds the wisdom of the aged, and is open to the Spirit's movement.
All this makes this season of Pentecost especially sweet. Even as we face questions, griefs and uncertainties, I am filled with a trust in what God is doing in our midst--and it's good.
grace and peace,
Pastor Molly
We will start our summer worship schedule this Sunday, with services at 8:30 and 10:30. I hope to see you there!

Staff Changes
With sadness and gratitude, I want to share with you two upcoming staff changes: Dr. Jeanette Yaryan and Caroline Dawes will both be leaving our staff as of the end of July.
Dr. Jeanette has been an outstanding organist/pianist, sharing in worship leadership here for nearly two years. She is on faculty at the Idyllwild Arts Academy, and has been living there full-time for the past year; the commute has grown taxing, and her responsibilities there have grown. As she departs, she offers gratitude for our flexibility in working with her, and for this creative outlet. Her last Sunday here will be July 27, and we will celebrate her ministry alongside the retirement of Linda Waterman that day at a luncheon.
Caroline Dawes came on staff as our Director of Youth Ministry 9 years ago; during her time here, she's helped build the thriving youth ministry program that inspires us today. Her decision to leave comes after much prayerful thought, with significant sadness, and with great trust that the youth group and our church are in a good place to move through this transition to a great future. Because her last days of work will be with the youth on a Sierra Service Project trip, her last Sunday in worship will be July 13, and we are working on an all-church celebration sometime that afternoon. Read more in the letter she sent to our Staff-Parish Relations Committee here.
May 23, 2014
Dear Staff Parish Relations Committee,
It is with both joy and sorrow that I submit my letter of resignation as the Director of
Youth Ministries at First United Methodist Church. I am writing this letter as a happy
employee; I love the team I work with and the church family beyond words. I am so
grateful for the opportunity to serve the youth, this church, and God through this position
and with the wonderful people here. But, simply put, it is time.
Ecclesiastes seems to say it best: “For everything there is a season, and a time for
every matter under heaven. (3:1)” In my heart I feel that my gifts and the church’s
needs met at the perfect time. Great things have been done, foundations of love and
community have been established in the heart’s of so many young people, and this
church has developed a solid youth ministry program. Now, this youth group is in a
transitioning time. It has gone from a small youth group, to a big youth group and it has
been in “maintenance” mode. It is time for some “fresh visioning” and examination of
what it needs to be for the next generation of youth coming through. Personally, I feel
that I am being called to a new season as well (a season that includes some more time
with my growing son).
I’ve always approached this position feeling very Spirit-led, and as hard as it is for me
personally to “trust the Spirit” right now, I must do so. I cannot imagine leaving such
wonderful youth and such a great position, but this was never mine...it was entrusted to
my care, and I feel I am honoring that by doing what feels best now.
I have always praised this church for the commitment that it has to young people. It will
help this youth group sustain while the next leader is found. Pastor Molly is an
incredible leader to work with, and she is the right leader to help facilitate the right
change.
I have spoken with Pastor Molly, and would like to offer a 2-month notice. It is my
current plan to for SSP to be my last week (ending July 27, 2012). I plan to work with
her regarding communication to the church and to the youth group. My only request
was that this not be made public until after the Youth Banquet so that the focus can be
on our outstanding youth.
I leave with great sadness as I have loved the opportunity to be here in ministry with
each of you. AND, I have great hope for the exciting things to come at First UMC.
With Deep Love and Gratitude,
Caroline Dawes
Our Staff-Parish Relations Committee is already at work, searching for new candidates for these jobs, as well as for the Music Director position (as Linda Waterman retires). We would be grateful if you would hold our church in prayer as we move through this time of change and transition, trusting that God is doing amazing things.(Pastor Molly)

On Sunday, July 27, we will have a lunchtime party honoring Linda Waterman at her retirement, and honoring Dr. Jeanette Yaryan as she moves on to next adventures.
Besides sharing lunch together, we're planning some good, musical fun--including an opportunity for anyone to "join the choir" as we sing through a couple favorite anthems.
Everyone's welcome to be a part of the fun!!

Join us for these exciting upcoming Sundays:
June 15 - Celebrating Dads and Grads on Father's Day, plus a special message about Imagine No Malaria and our LemonAid project.
June 22 - Caroline Dawes will be preaching on God's light, and Pastor Molly will be baptizing a young child at 10:30.

Worship Helpers: If you would like to participate in worship as a reader or communion server, please email the office. We know summertime schedules are almost set for many of you, so please let us know when you can help. Readers at 8:30 & 10:30 am help serve communion and collect the weekly offering. For 10:30 worship we also need two additional communion servers. Junior and Senior High youth are encouraged to help out, too! We always need videographers in the balcony and sound/computer operators downstairs.

This summer the youth are asking the congregation to help support their Sierra Service Project trip by purchasing "stock shares" of $25, $50, or $100 (or more). We'll be officially selling stock for the next 3 Sundays. Anyone who purchases a share will receive a postcard from our trip as a "dividend!" Each youth pays the SSP participation fee; funds raised will cover transportation and scholarship costs. This is a GREAT INVESTMENT!

Welcome to our Summer Interns in Children and Family Ministries
Our Staff-Parish Relations Committee is very pleased to announce that we have hired two summer college interns: Mele Tuuholoaki and Luke McCandless. Both are members of our congregation.
They have already begun their work--both will be with us part-time through the summer, helping support and shape ministry with young people and families, and across our generations.
Luke McCandless just completed his first year at California State University - Long Beach, where he is studying Mechanical Engineering. His optimism is contagious, as he stretches himself into service in new areas. He brings great gifts in music, as well as a deep love of the church.
Please help us welcome Mele and Luke to these roles in our congregation!

An Auspicious Beginning by Bob Peterson
Wasn't last Sunday special? First, we had a full sanctuary (not jammed) thanks to the confirmation class of Middle School kids, their families, friends and Mentors. The music was great, the sound systems all worked, thanks to Trey, and Pastor Molly kept things going as usual.
Then, the Fellowship Hall was filled for the great luncheon, as planned by our staff and youth leaders. It was a meaningful celebration of 20 young confirmands and one high school graduate. When all this comes together and all ages are represented, it's a good feeling and shows how God's spirit is moving within our congregation. May it continue for this and many more years.
Between Caroline, Molly and Meagan, every detail was planned to perfection and went off without a hitch. I, for one, was inspired, impressed and very proud of the young people and all of us who were there. It was an auspicious beginning for our new time schedule this summer. Remember, we have two services this Sunday, Father's Day, one at 8:30 AM and one at 10:30 AM.
I heard that Jim Howard, Arnie and others sold parking spaces Memorial Day to raise funds for our church and that they may be doing this again during our Fourth of July week-end. This special fund raising helps our income (over $800 Memorial Day) so if you wish to park there on the Fourth, plan ahead and get there early. Every bit of undesignated money helps with our expenses. Perhaps you have an idea the Trustees can use for fundraising. Talk to their Chair, Don Burrows.

The Klinger/Potter families are helping the Nihei/Fredrickson family in Northern CA find a bone marrow donor for their son Baylor, age 7. He is currently hospitalized with leukemia; to survive he needs a donor within three months. The donor must be half Asian, half Caucasian, ages 18 to 44. The Asian-Caucasian database of 400,000 has been searched but no one matches. Baylor's family would appreciate help publicizing two websites to locate a donor. Faith UMC in Torrance will be organizing a donor drive.
