Lightning strikes Tennessee church twice; sparks second fire
Nashville, Tennessee
By Sarah Glass for NCN News
Trinity Church of the Nazarene in Nashville, Tennessee, was destroyed by fire early Thursday morning. Witnesses reported lightning hit the church.
No one was injured.
The church experienced a previous fire in July 2012 after lightning struck the church steeple. WKRN reported the 2012 blaze was contained to a small portion of the roof, but water damaged much of the building. The congregation installed a lightning rod with a new steeple several months later.
More than 50 firefighters responded to Thursday's two-alarm fire. One firefighter was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries after falling.
Trinity Church Senior Pastor Michael Proctor was called to survey the damage.
"Well it's devastating, but again it is a building," Proctor told News Channel 5. "The church is made of the people — caring and loving for another, loving for the community. We'll bear witness to the kingdom of God. And you know, it is a building; we'll recover."
The roof was completely destroyed and services will be relocated.
The overnight thunderstorm is believed to be responsible for two other area fires.

Southern California elects new superintendent
Murrieta, California by Sarah Glass for NCN News
General Superintendent David A. Busic announced the election of Thomas "Tom" Taylor Jr. as the new Southern California district superintendent.
Elected on the 10th ballot, Taylor follows John Denney, who is retiring after 13 years in the position.
Taylor has served as senior pastor of Apple Valley, California, Church of the Nazarene since 1995. Previously, he served at the Arnold, Missouri, Church of the Nazarene; Esther-Flat River Church of the Nazarene in Park Hills, Missouri; and Gateway Church of the Nazarene in Bridgeton, Missouri.
A graduate of Mid America Nazarene College (now MidAmerica Nazarene University), Taylor earned a Master of Divinity from Nazarene Theological Seminary. He is currently pursing a Doctor of Ministry from NTS.
Tom and his wife, Debbie, reside in Victorville, California. They have two adult children, Tiffany and Derek.
Churches honor individuals, raise funds for missionary health care
Global Ministry Center
Nazarene churches honored 1,012 people last month with Memorial Roll certificates or Distinguished Service Awards, providing US$62,550 for missionary health care.
A Memorial Roll enables churches to honor deceased friends and loved ones. A certificate is given to the honoree's family or displayed in the church.
Distinguished Service Awards are presented by a church or church entity to those they want to honor for excellence in any field of ministry or service.
Nazarene Missions International processes the requests and 100 percent of the proceeds invested into the Missionary Health Care fund. The investment for a Memorial Roll is US$50 and for Distinguished Service Award is US$100.
The cost of providing insurance for Nazarene missionaries is approximately US$1.9 million per year. NMI has helped subsidize these funds since the inception of the Memorial Roll in 1919.
"All who have been missionaries or have worked closely with missionaries know how the health care fund helps to relieve many concerns about health care, which is complicated in most world regions," said Daniel Ketchum, NMI director. "Knowing their medical needs are covered by the Church, they are enabled to spread the love of Jesus without distraction of health care cost."
While many Memorial Roll and Distinguished Service Award presentations are made near Memorial Day, any individual or church may request and present these honors at any time of the year. So far this year, 3,264 individuals have been honored and $190,650 given for missionary health care. For more information visit the NMI website.--Nazarene Missions International
English Field pastors receive tablets
English Field, Mesoamerica Region
A few years ago, the Mesoamerica Region's English Field articulated a vision for the field. That vision included several holiness libraries so pastors could access ministry and training books. Leaders also came up with the plan so each pastor from the 12 districts could have this library in their hands on a tablet.
God recently answered the leaders' prayer for the 250 pastors on the field. After making a phone call about some gently used tablets and discovering the price, exactly 250 tablets were purchased. The English Field — in partnership with the Wesleyan-Holiness Digital Library, Holiness Legacy, and Redland Church of the Nazarene — was able to pre-load the tablets with a host of books and materials for the pastors to use.
"It has been exciting to see how churches, Sunday School classes, and individuals across the United States have donated so pastors who might never have the opportunity to have a tablet, now have one," said Darin Pound, Belize district superintendent. "The tablets are making an impact in their ministries and the libraries have opened up a wealth of knowledge for them. Thank you to all those who have given and helped with the tablet project for the English Field. You are a blessing!"
The following are thank you notes from pastors who now have a tablet:
Greetings! I want to take this opportunity to express thanks for the tablet I received earlier. I do take note that it was through your kind instrumentality that this was done. This device has enhanced my own pastoral ministry through the online resources, as well as through the ease to which it affords me greater control over many activities all in the palm of my hand.
Andrew Henry
Richmond Park, Jamaica East District
I would like to take this opportunity to extend my sincere gratitude to all those who helped me in obtaining this very necessary piece of tool for ministry. The tablet will assist me in communicating with the District and the region now. We are better equipped, this tablet comes to us with many of the necessary and relevant forms we use and will enhance the ability to be more effective in our service.
Regards,
Rev. Enfield Gordon
Belize District
Greetings in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour. Thank you for providing this tablet, this is a God-sent item I needed so much to do my pastoral work.
Yours in Christ,
Rev. Rick Sierra
I am grateful that such thought of generosity was extended to my colleagues and I as we serve together in the Master's vineyard. While I am still learning more each day about the device and all that it offers, the opportunity for greater access, efficiency and effectiveness is wonderful.

The Zimbabwe Pastors and Leaders Conference attracted 90 participants, including delegates from the Zimbabwe East and West districts, Zambia district superintendents, the Malawi South district superintendent, and Africa Central Field Holiness and Revivalism Coordinator Wellington Obotte.
The conference was held from May 19 through 22 at Avondale Church of the Nazarene.
Key speakers included General Superintendent Emeritus Stan A. Toler and Greg Crofford, regional education and clergy development coordinator. Toler's presentation focused on leadership while Crofford's addressed spiritual gifts.
"These presentations have helped me to come out of the box," said John Shikupa, lead pastor on the Zambia Southern Pioneer District. "I will never be the same again."
The messages were well received by the participants, who hungered for more and requested Toler and Crofford be invited back to Zimbabwe for another workshop or conference.
"These teachings have made a tremendous impact on my life and I will not forget this PALCON," said Jabulani Mafodha, a pastor's wife from the Zimbabwe West District. "I will apply these teaching in my life and ministry with my husband. Please invite [the speakers] back to Zimbabwe soon."
On the last day, a meeting was held for district superintendents. Toler and Crofford provided ministry tips and Communion was served to the group.--Church of the Nazarene Africa Region via Out of Africa
GMC Flags of the Nations: Swaziland
Global Ministry Center
Since September 1, 2009, the Church of the Nazarene's Global Ministry Center (GMC) proudly flies a flag each week of one of the many nations in which the denomination is present in ministry. Leaders were invited to send a national flag to be flown at the GMC alongside the flag of the United States*. The national flags rotate weekly, and photos of them raised are sent to the church leaders of that country.
This week: Swaziland
The Church of the Nazarene officially entered Swaziland in 1910.
Swaziland had a population of 1,403,362 in 2013. That same year, Swaziland reported 151 Churches of the Nazarene, 139 of which had been officially organized. Swaziland has 14,622 total members.
Swaziland has four Phase 3 districts. It is a part of the Africa Region.

Genesis missionary rallies her church
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
Freya Galindo from Veracruz, Mexico, is among the first cohort of missionaries from the Mesoamerica Region's Genesis initiative to be deployed to one of 28 select sites to begin planting churches. Galindo will serve for the next two years in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Her many responsibilities include creating preaching points that will eventually mature into organized churches in the Church of the Nazarene denomination. She will also develop local leaders to lead the new churches.
Staff from Engage magazine sat down with Galindo to talk to about the experiences that prepared her for the role.
Engage: How did you become a Christian?
Galindo: Since I grew up in a Christian family, I made the decision when I was 13. It was during Vacation Bible School. It always feels really special ... to minister to kids because when I was a child, people impacted my life in a really special way.
Engage: How did you sense God calling you to be a missionary?
Galindo: I was going to start school in a different place, not Jalapa, but my parents didn't have the money to do that, so I was really frustrated. So I had to stay in Jalapa, which is a good university, but it's not the one I really wanted to study at. I started the college in August, but the next February some of my friends from church, they were going [to a cross-cultural orientation offered by Mesoamerica Region's mobilization team] and they were saying it's going to be fun, it's a camp, let's go. I didn't want to go, but I had the money. During the last service they made the call and it was the perfect time for God to speak to me. I was praying and I stopped and said, "Okay, I'm gonna do it."

Doing mission well: Mobilization by Howard Culbertson for Engage magazine
Some missionary heroes of the past are notable for more than their cross-cultural ministry. They have also been good mobilizers of the church back home.
Sadly, I have heard missionaries grumble about having to speak in lots of mission services in churches. In my opinion, they were thinking far too narrowly about their missions call. World evangelism mobilization should be seen as part and parcel of a missionary call. Indeed, in the long run, mobilizing the church at home contributes greatly to Great Commission fulfillment.
Indeed, people call William Carey (1761-1834) "the father of the modern missionary movement" in part because he was a terrific mobilizer as well as a pioneer missionary to India.
In its early decades, the Church of the Nazarene was blessed with an effective global missions mobilizer in Susan Norris Fitkin. Growing up in Canada, Susan felt that God wanted her to be a foreign missionary. However, serious health issues prevented that.

General superintendent emeritus donates sermons to NNU Wesley Center
Nampa, Idaho
Northwest Nazarene University's Wesley Center recently hosted a dinner in honor of Jerald D. Johnson, Church of the Nazarene general superintendent emeritus, and his wife, Alice. Members of their family and representatives from the Wesley Center Office for Applied Theology gathered to celebrate Johnson's gift of an extensive set of sermons to the center.
The sermons span Johnson's entire career as pastor, pioneer of the work in West Germany, district superintendent, director of the denomination's World Mission Division, and general superintendent. The sermons, including many in German, were catalogued chronologically by the family.
The collection will soon be digitized and made available as part of the extensive library of Wesleyan-Holiness materials available through NNU's Wesley Center Online. The idea to catalog these sermons in an electronic format came from George Lyons nearly two decades ago. Lyons was the founding director of the Wesley Center Online.
"This collection reflects not only Johnson's faithfulness in proclaiming the gospel around the world, but also his creative and visionary leadership throughout his various assignments in the Church of the Nazarene," said Fred Fullerton, Wesley Center director. "We are honored to house this collection at NNU and to soon make it available to the global Nazarene family."
The Johnsons' commitment to ministry in Idaho's Treasure Valley is reflected in two pastorates. First, they pastored at the Nampa College Church of the Nazarene prior to Johnson's administrative assignments with the denomination. Following his retirement, he led the Meridian Valley Shepherd Church of the Nazarene in a relocation effort that included the building of a new church facility. Johnson is a 1949 graduate of NNU.--Northwest Nazarene University

MNU website wins national award
Olathe, Kansas
MidAmerica Nazarene University's website won a national Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Circle of Excellence Bronze Award for Best Institutional Website. MNU is the only college or university in the state of Kansas to receive a Circle of Excellence award in any category in the 2014 awards.
Kim Campbell, MNU's director of Marketing, said the university was recognized alongside larger institutions. More than 3,000 entries were judged in all categories.
MNU's website was developed entirely in-house by the university's marketing team.
"We are very honored for our in-house project to be recognized with a group of well-known schools within this category, including University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Kenyon College, and Davidson College," Campbell said.
In January, MNU won six CASE awards at the District VI conference in Kansas City, Missouri, including a gold award for the MNU website. All six winning projects were developed by the internal marketing team at MNU.
MNU Provost Mary Jones said the level of national recognition received with the latest award is significant due to the peer review aspect of the Circle of Excellence awards.
"When professionals at other institutions judge your work to be superior it lends real weight to the award," Jones said. "More importantly, we feel this award affirms our hard work to communicate with our audience in ways that resonate with them and represent the best practices in web design for higher education."

Trevecca receives grant for archives digitization
Nashville, Tennessee
Tennessee Secretary of State Tre Hargett presented a check for $2,500 in fulfillment of a SNAP Grant from the State of Tennessee to Trevecca Nazarene University's Waggoner Library on June 3.
Andrea Fowler, Trevecca archivist, applied for the grant to digitize much-used library resources. Fowler hoped to post the digitized files online so resources would be available to anyone with computer instead of limited to those who could visit Trevecca's Archives.
Waggoner Library staff members, Trevecca employees, and staff from Secretary Hargett's office witnessed the presentaion. Trevecca alumni in attendance included Ray Thrasher, retired director of Waggoner Library, and John and Jeanne Sugg. Jeanne worked for the secretary of state when Hargett served as the librarian and archivist for the State of Tennessee. Organizations in Tennessee can apply for a State and National Archival Partnership (SNAP) Grant "to preserve and provide access to Tennessee's historical records, to educate and train records custodians, and to support archival program development and enhancement."
The digitization of Trevecca's yearbooks and the Centennial Series of books is complete. Fowler will be adding digitized copies of other books related to Trevecca's history.
Interested persons will soon be able to access the digitized files via Waggoner Library's pages on trevecca.edu. In the meantime, the files can be accessed by clicking here.--Trevecca Nazarene University
