Laity Sunday
June 29 has been declared "Laity" Sunday by Pastor Craig. As your Lay Leader I've been asked to write this week's musing and also preach, as a pair with George Mitrovich, this coming Sunday.
Our scripture lesson is from Luke 10:1-12, and it talks about the Lord appointing 70 and sending them in pairs to every place and town where He would go. This scripture troubles, yet, intrigues me. If you take 70 and divide by two, that's only 35 pairs to go forward to spread the word of the Lord. That's not very many people to send forth to prepare for Jesus' arrival.
Jesus instructions seem harsh---"go like lambs into the midst of wolves. Carry no purse, bag, no sandals and greet no one on the road." WHAT? Go into the midst of wolves with no purse, bag, or sandals! I, for one, would be hard pressed to follow those instructions! And, those that know me would laugh at me actually not greeting anyone I meet on the road! Yet, I know God has sent me to gather in the least, the lost, and the lonely, to help prepare them for Jesus' coming. He's given me special talents and gifts to help others. He's commanded me to not be just a "park-it" on Sunday morning!
Come Sunday and hear George and me share our experiences of being sent by God into ministry. See You Sunday.
Blessings,
Lynette Williamson

Luke 10:1-12
Daily Devotional
Text to read: Luke 10:1-12
Luke 10:1 Now after these things, the Lord also appointed seventy others, and sent them two by two ahead of him[Luke 10:1 literally, “before his face”] into every city and place, where he was about to come. 2 Then he said to them, “The harvest is indeed plentiful, but the laborers are few. Pray therefore to the Lord of the harvest, that he may send out laborers into his harvest. 3 Go your ways. Behold, I send you out as lambs among wolves. 4 Carry no purse, nor wallet, nor sandals. Greet no one on the way. 5 Into whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace be to this house.’ 6 If a son of peace is there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you. 7 Remain in that same house, eating and drinking the things they give, for the laborer is worthy of his wages. Don’t go from house to house. 8 Into whatever city you enter, and they receive you, eat the things that are set before you. 9 Heal the sick who are therein, and tell them, ‘God’s Kingdom has come near to you.’ 10 But into whatever city you enter, and they don’t receive you, go out into its streets and say, 11 ‘Even the dust from your city that clings to us, we wipe off against you. Nevertheless know this, that God’s Kingdom has come near to you.’ 12 I tell you, it will be more tolerable in that day for Sodom than for that city.

John Wesley’s Notes-Commentary:
Luke 10:1-12
Verse 3
[3] Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves.
Matthew 10:16.
Verse 4
[4] Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way.
Salute no man by the way — The salutations usual among the Jews took up much time. But these had so much work to do in so short a space, that they had not a moment to spare.
Verse 6
[6] And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall turn to you again.
A son of peace — That is, one worthy of it.
Verse 7
[7] And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house.
Matthew 10:11.
Verse 11
[11] Even the very dust of your city, which cleaveth on us, we do wipe off against you: notwithstanding be ye sure of this, that the kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.
The kingdom of God is at hand — Though ye will not receive it.

Wednesdays, June 25 - Aug. 20 | 10:30 AM & 6:45 PM | (10:30) Linder 2 and (6:45) Linder Lounge
John records seven self-revelatory comments by Jesus. In that time and cultural context, these comments would have had a much more obvious meaning to his audience than to us. Yet, these statements still remain powerful and provocative. Pastors Jessica Strysko, Elbert Kim and Greg LaDue will examine each of these statements as to what they mean to us in understanding who Jesus was and is.
