Trinity United Methodist Church Daily Scripture Email Devotion "Song of Solomon"
My Beloved is mine and I am my Beloved's. (Song: 2:16)
We come this week to the most important, most underrated, under-appreciated book in the Hebrew Bible: Song of Solomon, or more correctly: Song of Songs. Why do I say this? Because, understood as Israel and the Church has generally understood it, this is a love song between Israel and God, us and God, the Church and Jesus.
Under neath the exotic (some would say even erotic) language is one of the deepest and most profound portrayals of a God of infinite, unrelenting, overflowing love; a portrayal of the God Jesus knew and incarnated.
If the world, if the Church, could capture, and be captured by this image of God of infinite love, oh my, how different the world would be! The things done in the name of Christ would be solely things done in the name of Love. I'm not getting syrupy here. The truth is that the image we have of God determines how we live, and too many people have an image of a harsh, angry God, and they live harsh, unkind lives. This is a very important book, yet so seldom read. Embrace it
with me this week, and you will be so glad you did.
