FireworksToday we will celebrate the 238th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, a document through which the thirteen colonies proclaimed they would no longer accept the rule of the British Crown and would instead become an independent nation. The American Revolution was a long and fearful struggle to secure our freedom and to make the principles laid out in the Declaration a reality. These principles— the equality of all people and our right to "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness" — are now virtually synonymous with the American ideal and serve as a model for democratic nations around the world.The patriots who signed the Declaration risked their freedom, their fortunes, and even their lives to form a government "of, by and for the people." These founding fathers left us with both a proud legacy and an obligation to honor their sacrifices by fully participating in and defending the freedoms we enjoy. As your elected representative in the State Assembly, I am proud to carry on the traditions of our great democracy.
I wish each of you an Independence Day with your family and friends that celebrates that spirit of independence. With each burger on the grill or fireworks display, let us each reflect on the freedoms that have their roots in our nation's birth 238 years ago.
