Leawood, Kansas, United States - The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection eNote with Pastor Adam Hamilton for Friday, 29 August 2014
Dear Resurrection Family,
Each morning the last two weeks I start my day reciting our key verse in this sermon series, Ephesians 4:29 - I know many of you are doing the same, "Let no evil talk come out of your mouth, but only what is useful for building up, as there is need, that your words may give grace to those who hear" and our prayer from Psalm19:14"Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer." Reciting these verses daily makes a difference in the words I chose and in the thoughts I entertain.
Nowhere is it harder to apply these verses than to the area of politics. This weekend I'll preach on Religion and Politics as we continue in our series on The Power of Words. We'll consider how, in our polarized and divided country, these scriptures above might hold the key to a better way of practicing our politics. In the message we'll consider what's wrong with our political rhetoric today. We'll hear from SenatorJack Danforth (who served 18 years in the Senate and as US Ambassador to the UN all the while retaining his ordination as an Episcopal priest) on how Christians should bring their faith to bear on politics. Finally, we'll turn to Paul's first letter to the Corinthians where Paul wrote a very divided congregation and provided important keys to healing the divide in their congregation.
If you are in town, don't miss worship this weekend. If you are out of town, join us online at www.rezonline.org - our 10:45 am and 5 pm Sunday services are web streamed live.
On another note, we had 308 people join Church of the Resurrection last weekend! Their names are listed below. This included 168 adults and 72 children at Leawood, 37 adults and 26 children at Resurrection West, 3 adults and 2 children at Resurrection Blue Springs. New members, if you are in town this weekend please arrive five minutes early to church - at the beginning of the service we'll officially welcome you into the membership of the church. Welcome! We're so pleased to be your church family!
This week was our fall blood drive. You donated 610 pints of blood this week! This includes 547 at Resurrection Leawood and 63 pints at Resurrection West. We had 48 first time donors this time around as well. Thank you for giving the gift of life!
Congratulations to Doug Spencer who won the drawing for the Honduran Mission trip at the missions fair last weekend! The missions fair at Leawood was a huge success with hundreds of people signing up for mission trips around the world and mission service here in Kansas City!
As we celebrate Labor Day our nation celebrates those who often work behind the scenes, and play an often unsung yet huge role in the quality of our lives. At Resurrection there are many people like this, among them are the folks who work in our technical arts ministry helping with lighting, sound and video in all of our services. This weekend we're giving tours right after worship at Leawood of the tech arts spaces - the video control room, the recording studio, light and sound boards. Do you have an interest in volunteering as a part of one of these teams? We're looking for volunteers who are 15 years and up. Plan to stick around after worship. Meet at the steps that lead up to the balcony on the east end of the Narthex ten minutes after worship is over, or contact Frank Gentile atfrank.gentile@cor.org for more information.
Our staff and volunteers are gearing up for the 16th annual Leadership Institutehere at Resurrection. We'll have 2,000 pastors and church leaders from across the country joining us for this event, September 24-26. Our aim each year is to inspire, encourage and equip church leaders to lead their congregations. We offer 80+ workshops, several exciting plenary sessions and pre-institute intensive workshops. We have three busses of people coming from the Dakotas and Minnesota. Arkansas currently has the most registrants with 243 though Texas is not far behind. We have pastors coming from Russia, and Cuba, and several other parts of the world, and we'll have participants from almost all 50 states. I believe this will be our best ever. Early bird registration discount ends at midnight on September 3. If you have friends or family in other churches across the country, tell them about this event and share this link with them: http://li.cor.org.
Finally, I'd love to invite you to join me for the Sacred Steps 5K Run/Walk and Kids Fun Run on Saturday, September 20 at 8 am at the Leawood Campus. This is a great time of fellowship and fun and the proceeds are used to drill wells to bring clean drinking water to various parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo. This really is a blast. Sign up by clicking here, http://www.cor.org/index.php?id=6447.
See you in worship (or online!),
Adam
