Saint Paul, Minnesota, United States - Lutheran Seminary's God Pause "Moved by the Promise" for Sunday, 3 August 2014 "Be Thou My Vision" ELW 793
1. Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;
naught be all else to me, save that thou art:
thou my best thought both by day and by night,
waking or sleeping, thy presence my light.
2. Be thou my wisdom, and thou my true word;
I ever with thee and thou with me, Lord.
Thou my soul's shelter, and thou my high tow'r,
raise thou me heav'nward, O Pow'r of my pow'r.
3. Riches I heed not, nor vain, empty praise,
thou mine inheritance, now and always:
thou and thou only, the first in my heart,
great God of heaven, my treasure thou art.
4. Light of my soul, after victory won,
may I reach heaven's joys, O heaven's Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
still be my vision, O Ruler of all.
My wife and I have different gifts. She, for example, remembers how to get somewhere she's been before and understands directions intuitively. I do not have this gift! So, if she's not in the car with me, I am dependent on my phone's GPS. I can't figure out how to get where I'm going on my own; I need a vision! I find this to be true for my faith, too. Without a picture or a map, I start to focus on other things. I get lost. I turn inward and close myself off to God and neighbor. Thanks be to God that we have been given a vision! In the Incarnation the Father has sent the Son to become our way, and our truth, and our life. We see in him God's intention for our lives, and we see in him what God has done to restore us to life.
Thank you, God, for showing me the way. Thank you for being the way! Turn my eyes from fear and worry and help me to focus on you alone. Amen.
