Sunday's Scripture:
Luke
12:22-28
Luke 12: Steep Yourself in God-Reality
22-24 He continued this subject with his disciples. “Don’t fuss about what’s on the table at mealtimes or if the clothes in your closet are in fashion. There is far more to your inner life than the food you put in your stomach, more to your outer appearance than the clothes you hang on your body. Look at the ravens, free and unfettered, not tied down to a job description, carefree in the care of God. And you count far more.
25-28 “Has anyone by fussing before the mirror ever gotten taller by so much as an inch? If fussing can’t even do that, why fuss at all? Walk into the fields and look at the wildflowers. They don’t fuss with their appearance—but have you ever seen color and design quite like it? The ten best-dressed men and women in the country look shabby alongside them. If God gives such attention to the wildflowers, most of them never even seen, don’t you think he’ll attend to you, take pride in you, do his best for you?
John Wesley's Notes-Commentary:
Luke 12:22-28
Verse 22
[22] And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on.
Matthew 6:25.
Verse 25
[25] And which of you with taking thought can add to his stature one cubit?
Which of you can add the least measure — It seems, to add one cubit to a thing (which is the phrase in the original) was a kind of proverbial expression for making the least addition to it.
Verse 28
[28] If then God so clothe the grass, which is to day in the field, and to morrow is cast into the oven; how much more will he clothe you, O ye of little faith?
The grass — The Greek word means all sorts of herbs and flowers.

DATE CHANGE for Mary Circle meeting: We are postponing our meeting until Monday, September 29 at 7:00pm in Epworth Lounge. |
Another Trip Around the Sun
It's my birthday week, which
always makes me a bit reflective about my life. It's been a good
year--including things I have wanted and worked hard for, and things I'd have
never guessed would come. Frustrations, joys, blessings and more.
Ann Gallagher was here at
church today, doing some gardening--pruning roses, she brought some lovely
little pink blooms into my office. "Here are some flowers for your
birthday. Be careful of the thorns," she said. Isn't that how it
goes--flowers and thorns. Beauty and caution.
Tuesday, Jim Raycroft was
here for much of the day, sorting and filing in the Choir Room, and taking
inventory of the handbells. I'm catching his energetic and passion for making
use of the rich resources and musical tradition here. He's got plans for a
little polish and tuning for the bells, so they ring even more beautifully. I
am grateful for a colleague with the vision to see what a difference some
polish and care will make to the beauty of our worship. I suppose that's how
it goes, too--we are well-served to remember that we seek after a God who
sees our potential and works with us to make us sing ever more beautifully.
grace
and peace,
Pastor Molly

From the Lay Leader,
Johnna Kosnoff
bi-weekly thoughts and
reflections from our church Lay
Leader
Let's have a party!
"Okay...maybe not a party.
Let's have a bible study class and call it a party! In case you've missed the
news, Pastor Molly and I will be co-leading a 7-week course, "Animate
Bible," meant for all age groups (yep, youth to elder). This won't be
the type of study where you read the bible and answer questions. Instead,
we'll have a 10 minute video from a leading Christian speaker to help spark
discussion about the Bible: how it came together, what we find included and
not included in it, why it is important to us today and how we apply it to
our lives. Your "study guide" is also a journal to allow you
freedom for imaginative and critical thought to enable better understanding
of the bible and our Christian History, which, is exactly what ¶105 of our
Book of Discipline tells us we should be doing on an ongoing basis (well, I
paraphrased a tiny bit). If you don't believe me though, look it up on page
81 in our Book of Discipline. We Methodists are supposed to be thinking and
studying about our scriptures and traditions..."

Okay…maybe not a party. Let’s have a bible study class and call it a party! In case you’ve missed the news, Pastor Molly and I will be co-leading a 7-week course, “Animate Bible,” meant for all age groups (yep, youth to elder). This won’t be the type of study where you read the bible and answer questions. If you don’t believe me though, look it up on page 81 in our Book of Discipline. We Methodists are supposed to be thinking and studying about our scriptures and traditions.
¶105 defines Theology as our effort to reflect upon God’s gracious action in our lives. It challenges us to test, renew, elaborate and apply our doctrinal perspective so that we may spread scriptural holiness in our world. Our theological task is to be both critical and constructive. We are called to ask the right questions in order to receive the gospel promises in our troubled and uncertain times. We are challenged to study and discern individually, in order to be effective disciples. However, we are also called to study communally, in order to bring and sustain life to our congregation. Our theological inquiry helps clarify our thinking and presses us to pay attention to the world around us so that we may better understand the truth given in Jesus Christ and be prepared to share it with the world.
Our hope is that this class will help you ask and answer the questions needed to better understand the bible and what it means for your spiritual journey. I want it to help you reflect on God’s gracious action in your own life. Please contact the church office and sign up today!
