2014 Attendance MugsThe United Methodist Church of the Resurrection Blue Springs in Blue springs, Missouri, United States Pastor Penny Ellwood's eNote: The season of lent has begun. for Friday, 20 February 2015
Greetings Resurrection Blue Springs,
Wednesday night we began the season of Lent. Lent signals the beginning of 40 days of prayer, self-denial and confession that culminate in Easter. It is a time of preparation, when we return to God, admitting our frailties and failings, and re-engage in the spiritual disciplines that leads us toward the new life of Christ. This period mirroring for us Christ’s 40-day temptation in the wilderness.
We began this process on Wednesday night at our Ash Wednesday service as we wrote down our confessions and gave them to God in a burning barrel of fire. Then we watched as the ash floated up into the cold night sky symbolically lifting our sins away and into God's mercy and grace. Many of you will continue this process by either given something up, by means of fasting, or taking something new on, as a way to help shape your faith during these days. We're also offering several things as a church to help you grow in your faith as we walk this journey towards Good Friday and Easter together. Tomorrow you have an opportunity to engage in a Faithwork project to put together Health Kits for Heart to Heart Ministry. These kits will go to places experiencing disasters or hardship. We'll also be starting a Lenten Bible study on Sunday evenings that you are welcome to join. I would also like to invite you to commit to being in worship every weekend during this holy season, either in person or online as part of your preparation.
This Sunday we're going to wrestle with some questions common to our faith journey. As our faith really grows from the questions we wrestle with over time, I want to engage a couple of important questions over the next two weeks. This week we'll wrestle with the question of letting go. Why is it so hard to let go? Why do we fear turning over control of our life and putting our trust in God? Life is full of moments when we have to learn what to hold on to and what to let go of. Why is it so hard for us sometimes to make these decisions? Then next week we’ll address, the question, "Once you’ve finally gotten the courage to let go, how do you maintain the faith to follow?" I hope you'll invite friends and join us this weekend and this entire season as we continue to shape our faith and build Christian community together.
Here are the details about what's coming up:
This week he'll be preaching about the window and their groundbreaking we're going to break away for our own This will be a special weekend of worship in Leawood as the stained glass window design for the new sancutary is unveiled. Adam will be preaching about God's story as it is revealed through the design for the new window. If you are interested in becoming a patron of the Resurrection window, we will have envelopes at Guest Services for anyone who would like to make a donation in honor or memory of a loved one.
