In This Issue:
- What Percentage Get Involved?
- Raise the Level of Your Performance
I met with leaders of a church last week and asked them what percentage of their new attendees were not serving in some way (hospitality, children’s ministry, set-up/tear-down, small group leadership, etc.). The question seemed to surprise them. They said that at least 95% of new people who stay at the church serve in some capacity!
This number is awesome and so much higher than in the vast majority of churches. Here is how they do it.
- Build it into the culture. The church offers a four session gathering called Growth Track. It tells people about the church, covers what it means to have a personal relationship with Jesus, connects them to other people in the church and explores their gifts and personality and helps them find a place to serve.
- Talk about it often. Serving is talked about regularly from the platform in the sermon. The message is clearly communicated that to be a Christian includes serving.
- Celebrate it. The annual Vision Sunday lifts up the ways in which people have served over the past year and the ministries in which the church has invested. The annual Serve Team Appreciation Banquet is a special gathering at a nice restaurant to which only those who have served in the previous year are invited to enjoy a great free meal and be served instead of serving.
- Thank people. Team leaders regularly thank those who are serving. What is really interesting is that those who serve often thank the leaders for inviting them to serve and allowing them to serve. Service is supposed to be “something I get to do” instead of “something I have to do”.Want to see more people serving in your church? Let’s create a plan to make it happen.
Two weeks ago another pastor contacted me about entering into a coaching relationship. A Skype conversation and an email later, he said that he felt heard, the focus was clearly on the issues he wanted to address and he had been asked several questions which were helpful. He is committed to raising the level of his performance.
Coaching is a proven method for helping us break through barriers, clarify our goals, better understand our current reality, think through a variety of options and implement specific changes. Athletes have lots of coaches. Outstanding business leaders use coaches. A growing number of pastors (and non-pastors) are experiencing the value of having a skilled coach. What about you? You are worth the investment and so is the ministry to which you have been called.
Here are some options for you to gain the benefits of having a coach:
- Individual or Group – we can work with you in a 1:1 setting or you can gather others and we will work with the group
- Online or In-person – we can meet via an online platform such as Skype or we can meet face-to-face
- Start Today or Later – you can get started today or set a start date for some point in the future (like this summer or fall)
- Pay-in-full or Make Installments – you can cover the investment up front or you can make payments over time Contact Don today to take the next step –don@dnacoaching.com
