"Are You Forgetting to Think?" Rabbi Moffic in Highland Park, Illinois, United States for Monday, 30 May 2016 "The Book is Here"
I hope you are finding rest and relaxation during this Memorial Day. Rest and relaxation are are not simply rewards for hard work.
Rest is a way of recreating ourselves--of recharging our batteries and reigniting our critical sparks. Recreation = Re-creation
One of the wisest things a mentor said to me was "Take time to think." As a rabbi, as in other professions, we can become consumed with the everyday. The phone calls to make, the people to visit, the programs to plan. We can be eternally busy.
But as Henry David Thoreau put it, "It is not enough to be busy... The question is: What are we busy about?"
Unless we take time to pause, to take time to think, to take time for rest, we forget what we are busy about. If we keep pedaling and pedaling, but forget to make sure we are going in the right direction, our pedaling does not make a difference. We are only moving further away from our goal.
Take time for recreation. And while you're doing so, read a good book. Barbara Mahany, a noted author and writer for the Chicago Tribune, just reviewed three new books, including my own www.rabbimoffic.com/JewishJesus. Her article is here.
Sending many blessings for a meaningful start to summer,
