From Pastor Molly: big promisesIt was such a joy to share in the baptism and confirmation of six of our youth last Sunday; this week, we will share Confirmation with two other youth.
Whenever I read the vows we ask at baptism, I'm reminded of how big these promises are: they're a commitment to loving God with our whole selves. With all of our lives. Some days, I'm overwhelmed with what they demand of me. (God wants me to resist evil, injustice and oppression in whatever forms they present themselves? I'm comfortable trying to be a generally good person, but that's a tall order!)
Other days, I'm blown away that God would trust me with this kind of responsibility. (God is giving ME freedom and power?!? Jesus asks ME to put my whole trust in his grace?!?)
Always, it comes to me as an invitation to take up a life that is bigger than me.
In these promises, we claim a faith that is lived out in daily life. With faith we go--to work, to family, to advocate, to comfort, to heal, to grieve, to serve. It sends us out from our comfortable places, and gives us a bold new identity. May it be so.[Pastor Molly Vetter]
This week our Children's Ministry is starting a 4-week summer Fun-Day School! The kids will start in worship, then leave after the Children's Time to do an activity together. They'll join us again for Communion and the end of worship. Please invite friends!
This week I start a three week sermon series: Go. Each week, I'll share a story from Luke's gospel, where Jesus sends us out into lives of action and faith.

Luke 9:51-62
Rev. Molly Vetter, preaching
Scripture Text: Luke 9:51 As the time approached for him to be taken up into heaven, he made his decision to set out for Yerushalayim. 52 He sent messengers ahead of him, who went and entered a village in Shomron to make preparations for him. 53 However, the people there would not let him stay, because his destination was Yerushalayim. 54 When the talmidim Ya‘akov and Yochanan saw this, they said, “Sir, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to destroy them?”[Luke 9:54 2 Kings 1:9–16] 55 But he turned and rebuked them.[Luke 9:55 Some manuscripts have verses 9:55b–56a: . . . and he said, “You don’t know what Spirit you are of; 56 for the Son of Man did not come to destroy people’s lives, but to save.”] 56 And they went on to another village.
57 As they were traveling on the road, a man said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” 58 Yeshua answered him, “The foxes have holes, and the birds flying about have nests, but the Son of Man has no home of his own.” 59 To another he said, “Follow me!” but the man replied, “Sir, first let me go away and bury my father.” 60 Yeshua said, “Let the dead bury their own dead; you, go and proclaim the Kingdom of God!” 61 Yet another said, “I will follow you, sir, but first let me say good-by to the people at home.” 62 To him Yeshua said, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and keeps looking back is fit to serve in the Kingdom of God.”
John Wesley's Notes-Commentary for Luke 9:51-62
Verse 51
[51] And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem,
The days are fulfilled that he should be received up — That is, the time of his passion was now at hand. St. Luke looks through this, to the glory which was to follow.
He steadfastly set his face — Without fear of his enemies, or shame of the cross, Hebrews 12:2.
Verse 52
[52] And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him.
He sent messengers to make ready — A lodging and needful entertainment for him and those with him.
Verse 53
[53] And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem.
His face was as though he would go to Jerusalem — It plainly appeared, he was going to worship at the temple, and thereby, in effect, to condemn the Samaritan worship at Mount Gerizim.
Verse 54
[54] And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did?
As Elisha did — At or near this very place, which might put it into the minds of the apostles to make the motion now, rather than at any other time or place, where Christ had received the like affront.
Verse 55
[55] But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.
Ye know not what manner of spirit — The spirit of Christianity is. It is not a spirit of wrath and vengeance, but of peace, and gentleness, and love.
Verse 57
[57] And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.
Matthew 8:19.
Verse 58
[58] And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.
But Jesus said to him — First understand the terms: consider on what conditions thou art to follow me.
Verse 61
[61] And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house.
Suffer me first to bid them farewell that are in my house — As Elisha did after Elijah had called him from the plough, 1 Kings 19:19; to which our Lord's answer seems to allude.
Verse 62
[62] And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.
Is fit for the kingdom of God — Either to propagate or to receive it.

Special Music: "I Will Follow Him" by Franck Pourcel and Norman Gimbel, sung by guest soloist Caroline McKenzie and Chancel Choir; "Come Sunday" by Duke Ellington; and a big, fabulous surprise organ postlude!"I Will Follow Him" by Franck Pourcel and Norman Gimbel
I love him, I love him, I love him,
And where he goes I'll follow, I'll follow, I'll follow
I will follow him
Follow him wherever he may go
There isn't an ocean too deep
A mountain so high it can keep me away
I must follow him
Ever since he touched my hand I knew
That near him I always must be
And nothing can keep him from me
He is my destiny
I love him, I love him, I love him,
And where he goes I'll follow, I'll follow, I'll follow
He'll always be my true love, my true love, my true love
From now until forever, forever, forever
I will follow him
Follow him wherever he may go
There isn't an ocean too deep
A mountain so high it can keep, keep me away
Away from my love
I love him, I love him, I love him,
And where he goes I'll follow, I'll follow, I'll follow
He'll always be my true love, my true love, my true love
From now until forever, forever, forever
I will follow him
Follow him wherever he may go
There isn't an ocean too deep
A mountain so high it can keep, keep me away
Away from my love
(And where he goes I'll follow, I'll follow, I'll follow)
(I know I'll always love him, I love him, I love him)
(And where he goes I'll follow, I'll follow, I'll follow)
(I know I'll always love him.............FADE)

Last Sunday was Fathers Day, and as I watched people enter church I noticed a large family group entering our sanctuary. Later I approached the tall, black suited father and jokingly said he got the prize for bringing the most people into our congregation. He was Rev. Paul Henshaw, Megan French's father, a retired Pastor, who along with his wife, Barb, live in Pleasanton, California. After the worship service he handed me a handwritten note which I wish to share with you.
“Bob – You said I got the prize for bringing the greatest number of family members this morning. My children, Megan and Jason, planned this Fathers Day weekend as a surprise to me and so I am thankful for my wife Barb, who gave me the opportunity to be a father - for Megan and Jason, who tried so patiently to teach me how to be a better father – for Megan & Eric and Jessica & Jason for promoting me to Grandfather and most of all for Sydney, Joshua, Jacob and Miller for allowing me to be Papa in their lives. I'm so grateful. (signed) Paul Henshaw”
The confirmation class was honored last Sunday, as well, and we applauded and reaffirmed our faith along with them as they were honored along with their mentors and Pastor Molly and staff. What outstanding youth we have in this church.
I had a brief visit with our church custodian Arnie Sachs who attended our Men's Breakfast last Monday. In talking with him I learned of his plans for many improvements and maintenance of our campus. It surely is an ongoing effort to keep our facility looking as good as it does and things in good repair. Never fear, he has lots of work planned when and if he gets the time and help to do it.
By the way, there is a planned pot-luck lunch July 10th

Response to the Attack in Orland, from Bishop Carcaño
This morning we woke up to the atrocity of the mass shooting in Orlando, Florida, the worst mass shooting in the history of the United States. We mourn with the families and the loved ones of those who were murdered and injured. We are so aware of the moral injury that such an expression of hate and prejudice inflicts upon us all. ...Read the whole message here
