Pastor Brian’s Faith Works
What do you want to be and what are you doing today to make that happen?
Actually, the Christian disciple version of this question is:
“Who does Jesus want you to be and what are you doing to cooperate?”
For instance, if I believe that Jesus wants me to be a person of love and integrity, what am I doing to cooperate with what Jesus is doing?
Am I practicing love the best I know how?
Am I taking some risks in the direction of more complete love?
Am I actively looking for ways to practice God’s love?
Am I refusing to nurture hate?
Am I turning over every sinful thought and action to Jesus?
Am I practicing the kind of love that only makes sense if I am following Jesus?
Who are you called to be? What does the best “you” look like?
Remember the Fruit of the Spirit, which we are studying and meditation on this summer: “... the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.”
(from Galatians 5:22-23)
Another question that we get to ask throughout our lives, is “Jesus, what do you want me / us to do?” It is easy to get tied into a knot on this question, but the “Be” question guides the “Do” question. If you are a person of God’s love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, then there is a whole lot you can “Do” that flows right out of that.
Blessings and peace. Be in Christ. Do what flows out of that.

Adults matter in our youths’ lives!
Did you know research has shown that each
child/youth needs to have five significant adults participate in their lives on a regular basis to keep them plugged into their faith? Are you one of those five for someone? It can be as simple as taking the time to have a conversation at the Gathering Spot
with one of our young people. Interested in doing a little more? We have openings for Sunday School assistants. Once a month you can come share in the lives of our youth.
The youth also share dinner together on Wednesday evenings. Sign up to bring dinner and join us.
Come see what they’re engaged in and learn about this amazing next generation. It’s easy to sign up for dinner, and you can make a difference through

CAVE QUEST VBS WAS A HIT!
We had a wonderful time at CaveQuest VBS in
June. Thank you to everyone who helped make it happen: Youth and adult volunteers who worked as Station Leaders and Crew Leaders; Ginny Lorenz and her Morning Sign-In workers who also served as Hope Ambassadors; Nancy Hulak, Dave Andrews, and Zack Askins who ran video and sound; Dee Tenney, Elizabeth Dyson and their wonderful helpers who worked in the kitchen and organized our Sunday Celebration Lunch; Kathy Askins and Marsha Skarupa who helped organize behind the scenes and who also got the kids pumped up every morning to learn about God; Kirk Rummel and his crew who built our awesome set; Pastors Brian and Drew who were good sports about being slimed on Wednesday; and last but not least, all of the people who prayed for us.
We had 141 children in attendance this year and we’ll be reaching out to them this month to invite them back to Hope for the start of our new Christian Education year. VBS will come around again next summer, so if you missed out on the fun this year we’ll put you to work next year!
“BUCKS FOR BOOKS”
CHILDREN’S OFFERING
The second weekend of August — the 13th &
14th — the children will be collecting offerings from the congregation as they exit the Sanctuary after Time with Children. These offerings will be combined with those collected by the children in worship in June and July and during Vacation Bible School and will be used to purchase new books (in English) for the children of Fiji whose
school libraries were destroyed by Cyclone Winston this past February. 100% of the funds collected will be used to purchase books through the online source BetterWorldBooks.com which will then ship them to Fiji for free.
All books are being sent to our United Methodist Missionary Rev. Jerusha Neal, who is on staff at the Davuilevu Theological
College in Fiji. (Jerusha and her husband Wes
were the pastors at Santee UMC about 8 years ago, so they’re part of our San Diego family!) The college will see to it that the books are distributed to the schools and libraries throughout the island.
Thank you in advance for helping our children
share God’s love with the children of Fiji!
WATER SLIDE AT NOON ON
SUNDAY, SEPT. 11!
Our new year begins the weekend of September
10-11. That’s when we’ll return to our traditional curriculum and age-level classes for our Saturday night Kids Alive classes and our Sunday morning Sunday School classes. That Sunday we’ll have a Ministry Fair and lunch following the late service and to make it even more fun, we’ll have a water slide for the children! So kids, wear your bathing
suits under your church clothes and bring a towel along. Invite your neighborhood friends so they can see what a great place Hope is for families to journey in faith together!
WANTED: ADULTS WITH A LOVING HEART FOR GOD AND KIDS!
Would you like to connect with the younger
generation at Hope? We’re looking for loving
adults who would like to assist in children’s Kids Alive (Saturday night) and Sunday School (9 & 10:45) classes roughly once a month. Assisting is easy and requires no prep work; you are there to support the lead teacher and help the children follow instructions. Contact Carrie in the office for more information about this fun way to serve God: 858.485.5840 x103.
