Global classroom links Arkansas, Romania high school students by Richard Gammil for Engage magazine
Students from Batesville, Arkansas, High School meet with Romanian high school students through Skype.
A brainstorming session between two Nazarene friends resulted in a ground-breaking, globe-spanning experiment. It united two groups of students from Batesville, Arkansas, and Sighisoara, Romania, to solve community needs. The project has provided an opening for a Nazarene Romanian pastor to mentor youth in the Sighisoara high school.
The story unfolded when Dr. Roberta Bustin asked her friend, “What can we do to reach out to the youth in my city? After almost 20 years of ministry, we still have not found the answer.”
Roberta is a volunteer with Nazarene Mission Corps, the mission-sending arm of the denomination that matches willing volunteer missionaries with ministry opportunities around the world. Before going to Romania in 1997, Roberta taught chemistry at Lyon College in Batesville. For nearly 20 years, she has had a “boatload” of mission assignments: teaching, preaching, church planting, and more.
Her friend, Jeanne Roepcke, is a teacher at Batesville High School.
“I have an idea,” Jeanne told Roberta. “It is something that has never been done before, but I think we can make it work.”For the rest of the story, see Engage magazine. Read more

Her friend, Jeanne Roepcke, is a teacher at Batesville High School.
“I have an idea,” Jeanne told Roberta. “It is something that has never been done before, but I think we can make it work.”
Jeanne is the facilitator for the EAST program in her high school. EAST is the acronym for “Environmental and Spatial Technology.” It began in 1996 and has expanded to nearly 250 schools across Arkansas and four other U.S. states. A unique model in modern education, it is a project-based, service-learning program. The classes use high-end technology obtained from the most progressive fields in the world. Jeanne is leading seven of these classes in her high school.
“EAST is designed to enable my students to tackle a new problem, take a team approach and come up with their own solutions,” Jeanne said. “We will take the program to Sighisoara and see what develops.”
Jeanne’s school and the Batesville community enthusiastically adopted her proposal. The first step was to establish and equip a laboratory for the high school in Sighisoara. A $5,000 grant preceded financial and material donations from the business community. People donated thousands of dollars worth of supplies, including three laptop computers, a 3-D printer, and a projector.
Back in Sighisoara, Roberta advertised the venture as an opportunity for students to further their knowledge and use of English. School authorities approved the concept and 10 students signed up. The facilitator would be Relu Cristurean, local Nazarene pastor.

In September 2015, Jeanne went to Sighisoara with two Batesville students and two technicians to open the laboratory. In the first year, instructors focused on teaching the students to use the software, develop three-dimensional animation, use Adobe Photoshop software, create three-dimensioned objects, and more. Ten Romanian students come to the Nazarene church at least twice weekly and meet with the Arkansas students by way of Skype, working around the eight-time-zone separation.
"This may not sound so different from some American classrooms, said Amanda, a Batesville student. “Yet, it highlights the way in which EAST can meet educational needs anywhere and prove transformative, regardless of borders or cultures.”
Her classmate Emma added, "Our Romanian classmates are very smart kids, really nice kids, too, and you can tell they really want to learn."
Pastor Relu is there to work with them.
“Participating in the EAST program is something new for me,” he said. “I get to build relationships with these 10 students. This is a good experience. The students are very bright and eager to learn. We talk about many things and I tell them about Romanian history and geography. I also have opportunity to talk about what it means to be a Christian. One student asked me for a Bible.”
The Romanian population is more than 70 percent Eastern Orthodox and, thus, virtually everyone identifies culturally as Christian. Pastor Relu says, “I tell them having religion won’t help you. You must have a relationship with Jesus Christ.”

A couple of last year’s students have graduated. One of them wants to return and help Pastor Relu teach the new term. Through the classroom partnership that Roberta and Jeanne established, this young pastor with three children has found a way to build relationships with the youth of his community.
This year the EAST program will expand to the nearby Romanian village of Tigmandru, a poor village that provides its children with limited education. As the EAST students wrestled with the extreme needs in the village, they focused on a single priority. Food becomes scarce during the bitterly cold winters, shutting down even the indoor greenhouses. Weeks of discussions between Batesville and Sighisoara students led to an innovative project.
The Batesville students designed small, three-level hydroponics growing units to be installed in private homes, using available materials such as soda bottles. With the 3-D printer, they designed nozzles, valves and other components. The classes in both Sighisoara and Tigmandru plan to employ the same technology in the coming academic year.
The Batesville community has gathered and shipped the materials needed for the in-home “farms,” including vegetable seeds, pumps, tubing, zip ties. The Romanian communities are gathering soda bottles and other available materials.

This is the first international project done by an EAST class. It is providing more recognition in the two Romanian communities for the Church of the Nazarene. And the residents appreciate Pastor Relu for his significant involvement in working with the students who are learning teamwork and technology as they meet community needs.

Ambrose University appoints new chancellor
The Ambrose University Board of Governors appointed Roland Laing as chancellor.
Laing has worked as barrister in a wide range of contexts since 1971 and he brings a depth of legal and leadership expertise to the position. His experience across provincial and federal courts, including the Supreme Court of Canada, is complemented by his disposition as a seeker of solutions.
He also has a long history of serving Ambrose: Laing served as advisor to the president from 2001 to 2007. In 2008, when Ambrose moved from its temporary campus in downtown Calgary, Laing played an instrumental role in securing the university's current 40-acre campus in Springborough. As the new campus has developed, Laing has continued to serve as chairman of the Campus Master Plan Committee.
Laing follows Riley Coulter in the position. Coulter retired in June after 26 years with the university.[Ambrose University] Read more

Prayer is requested for Michigan District Superintendent John Seaman, who was recently diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor.
Seaman was hospitalized last week in Tennessee while visiting family. He has since returned home to Michigan and underwent surgery Wednesday.
That night, John’s wife, Linda, released the following information:
John is out of surgery and in the recovery room now. He is recovering very well at this time. He will be monitored closely in the ICU tonight. The Lord gave us peace as we waited all day to see him come out of surgery. We appreciate your prayers and please continue to pray for John's recovery.
John was elected superintendent of the Michigan District in 2003. Prior to serving as district superintendent, he and Linda served as missionaries to Martinique and Côte d'Ivoire from 1976 to 2003. He is also a member of the Church of the Nazarene's General Board. Read more

The event ended with a worship service attended by more than 50 people. The sanctuary is small, so people participated while still outside.
"It was a very blessed time because there were people who reconciled with the Lord," said Estefania Amador, district Global Mission coordinator.

Flags of the Nations: Canada
The Maple Leaf is a flag consisting of a red field with a white square at its centre, in the middle of which is featured a stylized,
11-pointed, red maple leaf.
Since September 1, 2009, the Church of the Nazarene's Global Ministry Center (GMC) proudly flies a flag each week of one of the many nations in which the denomination is present in ministry. Leaders were invited to send a national flag to be flown at the GMC alongside the flag of the United States*. The national flags rotate weekly, and photos of them raised are sent to the church leaders of that country.
This week: Canada
The Church of the Nazarene officially entered Canada in 1902.
Canada had a population of 35,099,836 in 2015. That same year, Canada reported 176 Churches of the Nazarene, 153 of which had been officially organized. Canada has 12,991 total members.
Canada has four Phase 3 districts and one Phase 1 district. It is a part of the USA/Canada Region. For more information about the USA/Canada Region, visit usacanadanazarene.org.

Trevecca creates music building from former trucking site
Last fall, Trevecca Nazarene University announced a plan to repurpose existing buildings on the former Volunteer Express Trucking site to create a state-of-the-art music building.
Construction on the new building, The Center for Music and Worship Arts, officially began in January 2016. Barring delays, construction should be completed by the close of the year, though classes will not be held in the building until early 2017.
A grand-opening celebration is planned for spring 2017.
The cutting-edge building will provide additional instructional and rehearsal space for Trevecca’s growing School of Music and Worship Arts. The 25,509-square foot structure will house three traditional classrooms, five teaching studios for faculty to use for private instruction, and seven practice rooms, as well as additional spaces for choral and instrumental instruction and rehearsal. School of Music students and faculty will also continue to use instructional space in the Wakefield Fine Arts Building on Trevecca’s campus.
“The Center for Music and Worship Arts is designed to provide flexible instructional, administrative, and performance spaces to help accommodate continued growth in our music-related programs and provide a creative space to accomplish these different activities,” said David Diehl, dean of the School of Music and Worship Arts. “The architects have done a masterful job in capitalizing on the industrial nature of the existing structure and creating a unique and usable design that will be a great addition to our campus.”
The university worked with Nashville architecture firm Earl Swensson Associates (ESa) to design the building. ESa’s plans include a complete transformation of the existing office building and loading dock, as well as new construction and stone elements that reflect iconic architecture apparent throughout Trevecca’s campus.
The Center for Music and Worship Arts will boast a 2,810-square foot black box performance venue, easily adapted for various kinds of performances and productions, from senior recitals to musicals and choral concerts.
A recording suite on the first floor will be used to mix and record high-quality video and audio broadcasts for the choral, instrumental, and black box performance venues. These performances can then be simultaneously streamed to the Internet for family and friends of the students and university to view. Performances will also be recorded for archives and taken into the Trevecca Studios for post-production, to be professionally mixed and mastered for album release. The suite also provides an educational space for students to experience multi-camera video broadcasts in a real-world setting, as well as high-quality, live concert multi-track recordings.
The first floor will also feature an administrative wing, complete with a reception area, conference room, music library, and administrative offices. A music garden and courtyard will line the front of the building, welcoming visitors and serving as an additional student gathering area and outdoor performance space.
The second floor will offer more classroom space, as well as a guitar studio, numerous student practice rooms, faculty studios, and band rehearsal space.
In addition, School of Music and Worship Arts administrators hope the new building will open up new opportunities to serve Nashville’s creative community, including events such as presentations, receptions, and showcases.
Senior Caleb Dinger, a music major, is excited about what the new building has to offer.
“I am so excited about the new music building,” Dinger said. “The quality of this facility shows that we care about and believe in our programs. We already have a great music faculty and great leadership. Having these new facilities will help us build upon the potential we already have and better prepare our students for the many opportunities that await them.”
