“Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing” (ELW 807, Verse 1)
1. Come, thou Fount of ev'ry blessing,
tune my heart to sing thy grace;
streams of mercy, never ceasing,
call for songs of loudest praise.
While the hope of endless glory
fills my heart with joy and love,
teach me ever to adore thee;
may I still thy goodness prove.

Today my raspberries dripped off the vines. I write on July 20 from the Bitterroot Valley of western Montana, where I didn't imagine I could grow such big, beautiful berries. When we moved from the Seattle area, we thought we'd left such bounty behind. But here I am, in a moment of jaw-dropping abundance. For me, big, ripe raspberries are a small, delightful glimpse of God's glory to come.
As you read these words on October's first day, remember the blessings of your summer, your year, your life. When have moments of jaw-dropping abundance surprised you? Have berries dripped off the vines? Maybe you can pull some jam out of the freezer. Or if abundance has eluded you for a season, let verse one of this bright hymn be a hopeful prayer.
Fount of all blessings, remind us of your abundance and tune our hearts to praise! Amen.
