------- "New Beginning" Dr. EC3 for Tuesday, 7 March 2017 of Saint James United Methodist Church in Kansas City, Missouri, United States
Tuesday, March 7, 2017
Dear St. James Family:
For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:[Ecclesiastes 3:1]
During the State of the Church address in January we detailed a plan to bring some necessary, positive, yet difficult changes to the structure and staffing of St. James. Those changes are now coming to fruition and I want to once again communicate the new vision and address any questions or concerns.
There has been a huge cultural shift over the last few decades that has led to a decrease in church attendance across North America. The season of weekly worship attendance and the church being at the center of a community's life has come and gone. Today, we are in a post-church era in which congregations must find creative, innovative, and exciting ways to reach an unchurched society.
St. James experienced roughly 30 years of continual growth. However, as society shifted, so too did the growth patterns of this great church. In 2002, for the first time in decades, the worship attendance at St. James decreased. As society drew further away from church the numbers at St. James continued to decline. During this time there was also a change in pastoral leadership. On top of all that the country was in the height of the "Great Recession." This created a perfect storm that accelerated the decline at St. James.
St. James is transitioning into a new structure and staffing configuration out of necessity. I appreciate and honor the work that our associate pastors have done for St. James over the last several years. We are not making these changes because of ill-feelings; we are shifting into this new model because the season in which we are currently living calls for it and our survival as a congregation depends on it.
I realize that this transition may be difficult to embrace. But, believe it or not, it is very hard on me as well. However, I am convinced that we are on the verge of a breakthrough if we remain on this God ordained course. Since this is God's plan, God has the responsibility of making it work. As we embark on this new journey please don't hesitate to come speak with me or Pastor Settles with your suggestions, questions, and concerns. I pray that you will be patient and prayerful about our "New Beginning." With God's help we will not only survive but thrive together.
Blessings,
Dr. EC3
