Congo Women Arise: Building the Mama Lynn Center
This Mother's Day, we have an opportunity to celebrate and support women in the Democratic Republic of the Congo who are considered the foundation of the family.
Congo Women Arise is a partnership of the East Congo Conference, California-Pacific Conference, Memphis and Tennessee Conferences, to address the needs of rape survivors in a location often called the “rape capital of the world.”
The goal is to build the Mama Lynn Center, a women’s center that provides physical, psychosocial, and spiritual support as well as transitional housing and opportunities to learn income-generating skills.
Bishop Gabriel Unda, who was our guest speaker at Annual Conference 2016 and who itinerated in our Conference, is the Resident Bishop of the East Congo Conference and an inspirational supporter of this effort.
Our Cal-Pac local churches are invited to join in this partnership and make a real difference in the lives of these women and their families by collecting a special offering for Congo Women Arise on May 14, 2017, Mother's Day.
Efforts are already underway in the North District where, at Atascadero UMC, Maggie Fertschneider and others from the church's Mission Committee launched a three-year, $10,000 campaign for the Center in March of 2017. Within three weeks, they had received $7,500. "Without learning another means of making a living, these women, and perhaps their children, are not going to make it. And, that was not acceptable to us," Fertschneider says.
Members of Malibu UMC have set the stage for "Zuma Live," a benefit concert for Congo Women Arise on Saturday, June 3, 2017. Along with the great music will be a bar-b-que and, of course, the beach.
