West Africa Nazarenes help meet needs in Ebola-stricken communities Just over three years ago, the worst Ebola outbreak in history began, taking more than a year to control and eradicate. The disease devastated three countries in West Africa: Guinea (Conakry), Sierra Leone, and Liberia. By the time the outbreak dissipated, nearly 27,000 people were infected and more than 11,000 eventually died from the disease. Despite the recent outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ebola is no longer rampant in these three West African countries. However, there are still many who live with the scars of the disease — both physically and emotionally. Similar to the AIDS crisis that engulfed sub-Saharan Africa, Ebola left a stigma. Even those who fought Ebola and survived can become outcasts in their community. Some people are afraid to come close to them because they worry that the disease is still alive in their systems. The Church of the Nazarene was not exempt from the effects of Ebola. "We have continued to provide support to 22 children who lost their parents and families to the Ebola crisis," said Vidal Cole, Sierra Leone district superintendent. "We've worked with advocacy, food, and educational support for them." Last December, the church provided a Christmas party for the Ebola orphans. The children, in turn, invited others in the community to celebrate with them, resulting in a great time of fellowship. The Africa West Field has also provided school stationary for 50 children who were desperately in need. Boreholes and sanitation facilities have been provided for six communities through Nazarene Compassionate Ministries. "This has made life much easier for the inhabitants of these communities as they no longer have to walk miles in search of water," Cole said. "The quality of the life for the people has greatly increased and the presence of a water well in a community means a greater chance of survival, should Ebola resurface again." Frisco, Texas Stanley Storey remembered Stanley Storey, a retired minister and missionary, passed away 18 May. He was 90. Born in Lansing, Michigan, 6 October 1926, he was the son of Allen and Alma Storey. When the Great Depression started in 1929, the Storey family moved to Texas. In 1934, the Storeys moved to Burbank, California, and during World War II the Storeys lived in Ohio, where Stanley graduated from high school in 1945. The family moved back to California and Stanley attended Pasadena Nazarene College (now Point Loma Nazarene University), graduating in 1949 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master of Arts degree in 1956. During his second year of college, he met Norma Jeanne Pults. They both attended the Boyle Heights Mexican Church, where they perfected their Spanish. They married 14 April 1949. Stanley began his ministry as an interim pastor at the Boyle Heights Mexican Church, followed by pastoring the Upland Mexican Church. He served during the Korean War as a U.S. Navy hospital corpsman. He was discharged on his birthday, 6 October 1954. In January 1956, Stanley and Norma received a telegram from the Nazarene World Missions Department, asking if they were still interested in missionary work. They accepted. Stanley was ordained and they made preparations to go to Guatemala. They served in Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras for 38 years. His assignments as a missionary included serving at Bible schools and an orphanage, building churches, pastoring, teaching, leading Work & Witness teams, coordinating medical and dental teams, and serving as district superintendent and regional treasurer. Between 1986 and 1994, he coordinated 106 teams that constructed 86 projects. He worked with 2,000 team members. Stanley and Norma retired 1 January 1995 after 38 years of missionary service. They continued serving in the Golden Hills Community Church of the Nazarene for 13 years and were involved with compassionate ministries. In June 2007, they moved to Rolla, Missouri, to live close to their daughter. They were active in the Rolla Church of the Nazarene. Their final move was to Frisco, Texas, where they attended and enjoyed the fellowship of brothers and sisters in Christ at the NewStart-Frisco Church of the Nazarene. Stanley is survived by his wife of 68 years, Norma; a brother, Lee Storey; two children, Marlene Lilliker and Victor Storey; a foster grandson, Jose David Chavarria, and dozens of very close friends in California, Missouri, Texas, and Central America. Global Ministry Center Flags of the Nations: Suriname The Suriname flag's main colors — green, white, and red — represent fertility, justice/freedom, and renewal, respectively. The gold star symbolizes unity, referencing the previous flag with a star for each ethnic group. Since September 1, 2009, the Church of the Nazarene's Global Ministry Center (GMC) proudly flies a flag each week of one of the many nations in which the denomination is present in ministry. Leaders were invited to send a national flag to be flown at the GMC alongside the flag of the United States*. The national flags rotate weekly, and photos of them raised are sent to the church leaders of that country. This week: Suriname The Church of the Nazarene officially entered Suriname in 1984. Suriname had a population of 585,824 in 2016. That same year, Suriname reported 10 Churches of the Nazarene, six of which had been officially organized. Suriname has 1,874 total members. Located on the Mesoamerica Region, Suriname is a Phase 1 district. For more information about the Mesoamerica Region, visit mesoamericaregion.org. * = The weekly highlighted flag is raised on the middle of three poles in compliance with U.S. government protocols. It flies to the left of the GMC host-nation United States flag, which flies above the host-state flag of Kansas. The Christian flag flies on the third pole. Maine elects new superintendent General Superintendent David W. Graves announced the election of Stephen Dillman as superintendent of the Maine District. Elected 19 May on the first ballot, Dillman replaces Cecil Jones, who spent nearly 15 years in the position. Dillman is currently the director of Church Relations at Eastern Nazarene College. After serving as a pastor for nearly 20 years at churches in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, Dillman was elected superintendent of the Pittsburgh District in 1997.
