From Pastor Molly: belonging
Our official church calendar names this Sunday as the "Festival of the Christian Home." We also celebrate it as Mother's Day. The day is an invitation to honor our mothers, and all those who have "mothered" us. As Christians, it is also a day to honor the ways we are called to nurture others, and help them grow.
As members of the household of God, we claim a family that is so much bigger than our family of origin. Having first been loved by God, we love God back by loving one another. We belong, because we have been adopted in to God's family.
There's no provisional status in this adoption, and no shirt-tail relations.
As we seek to live as members of Christ's family, we recognize and honor all different sizes and shapes of families: single people and married couples, and those who've lost spouses; those who foster and adopt children, biological parents, and those who have no children; those who've lost children or lost parents, those whose extended families are far away, and those with many generations living close together. We believe everyone belongs, and trust we all have a part to play in the building-up of the household of faith.
As has become our tradition, in lieu of giving out flowers in honor of mothers at worship, we are making a donation to a mission project. This year, we are joining other United Methodists in our California-Pacific Annual Conference in donating to Congo Women Arise, a partnership of the East Congo, California-Pacific, Memphis and Tennessee Conferences. Our goal is to build the Mama Lynn Center, a women’s center that provides physical, psychosocial, and spiritual support as well as transitional housing and opportunities to learn income-generating skills. If you would like to make an additional contribution in honor of mothers, just mark your gift for "Congo."
grace and peace,
Pastor Molly
The themes of this series are borrowed from the sections of our United Methodist Social Principles, which you can read online. They speak to a wide range of social issues, and invite us to consider what our faith has to say to issues of our time. There's lots of space in our church for people to think differently on all these issues, but I look forward to opening up opportunities for us to pray, think and talk about what Jesus' gospel has to say to the challenges we face today.

"Now What? Welcome All Kinds of Families"
Rev. Molly Vetter, preaching
1 Peter 2:2-10
Scripture Text: 1 Peter 2:2 and be like newborn babies, thirsty for the pure milk of the Word; so that by it, you may grow up into deliverance. 3 For you have tasted that Adonai is good.[1 Peter 2:3 Psalm 34:9(8)]
4 As you come to him, the living stone, rejected by people but chosen by God and precious to him, 5 you yourselves, as living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be cohanim set apart for God to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to him through Yeshua the Messiah. 6 This is why the Tanakh says,
“Look! I am laying in Tziyon a stone,
a chosen and precious cornerstone;
and whoever rests his trust on it
will certainly not be humiliated.”[1 Peter 2:6 Isaiah 28:16]
7 Now to you who keep trusting, he is precious. But to those who are not trusting,
“The very stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone”;[1 Peter 2:7 Psalm 118:22]
8 also he is
a stone that will make people stumble,
a rock over which they will trip.[1 Peter 2:8 Isaiah 8:14]
They are stumbling at the Word, disobeying it — as had been planned. 9 But you are a chosen people,[1 Peter 2:9 Isaiah 43:20; Deuteronomy 7:6; 10:15] the King’s cohanim,[1 Peter 2:9 Exodus 19:6; Isaiah 61:6] a holy nation,[1 Peter 2:9 Exodus 19:6] a people for God to possess![1 Peter 2:9 Isaiah 43:21; Exodus 19:5] Why? In order for you to declare the praises of the One who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; before, you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.[1 Peter 2:10 Hosea 2:25(23)]

Special Music: A special Mother's Day song written and performed by some of our children with MaryAnn; "Ave Maria" by Bach/Gounod with the Chancel Choir "Ave Maria" Written by Rainer Oleak, Franz Schubert, Walter Scott • Copyright © Sony/ATV Music Publishing LLC, Universal Music Publishing Group
Ave Maria, maiden mild
Oh, listen to a maiden's prayer
For thou canst hear amid the wild
'Tis thou, 'tis thou canst save amid, despair
We slumber safely till the morrow
Though we've by man outcast reviled
Oh maiden, see a maiden's sorrow
Oh mother, hear a suppliant child
Ave Maria
Ave Maria gratia plena
Maria gratia plena
Maria gratia plena
Ave ave dominus, dominus tecum
The murky cavern's air so heavy
Shall breathe of balm if thou hast smiled
Oh maiden, hear a maiden pleadin'
Oh mother, hear a suppliant child
Ave Maria
Ave Maria
Verse 2
[2] As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:
Desire — Always, as earnestly as new born babes do, 1 Peter 1:3.
The milk of the word — That word of God which nourishes the soul as milk does the body, and which is sincere, pure from all guile, so that none are deceived who cleave to it.
That you may grow thereby — In faith, love, holiness, unto the full stature of Christ.
Verse 3
[3] If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
Since ye have tasted — Sweetly and experimentally known.
Verse 4
[4] To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,
To whom coming — By faith.
As unto a living stone — Living from eternity; alive from the dead. There is a wonderful beauty and energy in these expressions, which describe Christ as a spiritual foundation, solid, firm, durable; and believers as a building erected upon it, in preference to that temple which the Jews accounted their highest glory. And St. Peter speaking of him thus, shows he did not judge himself, but Christ, to be the rock on which the church was built.
Rejected indeed by men — Even at this day, not only by Jews, Turks, heathens, infidels; but by all Christians, so called, who live in sin, or who hope to be saved by their own works.
But chosen of God — From all eternity, to be the foundation of his church.
And precious — In himself, in the sight of God, and in the eyes of all believers.
Verse 5
[5] Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
Ye — Believers.
As living stones — Alive to God through him.
Are built up — In union with each other.
A spiritual house — Being spiritual yourselves, and an habitation of God through the Spirit.
An holy priesthood — Consecrated to God, and "holy as he is holy." To offer up - Your souls and bodies, with all your thoughts, words, and actions, as spiritual sacrifices to God.
Verse 6
[6] Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.
He that believeth shall not be confounded — In time or in eternity. Isaiah 28:16.
Verse 7
[7] Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,
To them who believe, he is become the head of the corner — The chief corner stone, on which the whole building rests. Unbelievers too will at length find him such to their sorrow, Matthew 21:44. Psalms 118:22.
Verse 8
[8] And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.
Who stumble, whereunto also they were appointed — They who believe not, stumble, and fall, and perish for ever; God having appointed from all eternity, "he that believeth not shall be damned."
Verse 9
[9] But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
But ye — Who believe in Christ Are - In a higher sense than ever the Jews were. A chosen or elect race, a royal priesthood - "Kings and priests unto God," Revelation 1:6. As princes, ye have power with God, and victory over sin, the world, and the devil: as priests, ye are consecrated to God, for offering spiritual sacrifices. Ye Christians are as one holy nation, under Christ your King.
A purchased people — Who are his peculiar property.
That ye may show forth — By your whole behaviour, to all mankind.
The virtues — The excellent glory, the mercy, wisdom, and power of him, Christ, who hath called you out of the darkness of ignorance, error, sin, and misery.
Verse 10
[10] Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.
Who in time past were not a people — Much less the people of God; but scattered individuals of many nations. The former part of the verse particularly respects the gentiles; the latter, the Jews.

Happy Mother's Day to everyone. Remembering our Mother is one of the best things we do, so tell her how you feel, or remember her at her best and it will be a special day in your life.
Last Sunday we heard our young people sing and play during Worship Service and they did a fine job. Also the bulletin announced that our Organist/Pianist Mary Ann Stickler would play, for the postlude, "Abide With Me", I learned that it was to be her own arrangement of that wonderful old hymn. It also reminded me of it being the very first recognizable music I learned at the early age of ten on my e-flat Mellophone alto horn. I was taking group lessons with other various brass players and Abide With Me was one song I had already heard in church. My, Oh my, that was like 86 years ago. How time flies.
The pot-Luck lunch last Sunday was a big success. Not only did they have enough for everybody, everyone I talked with said everything tasted so good. It's amazing that we can eat so well with no assigned dishes being brought, it's just the luck of the draw and always delicious. Prepare yourself for the next pot-luck sometime in June, after the May 21st all church picnic at El Nido Park, Torrance. Actually, this picnic is a sort of pot-luck with people bringing many goodies to go along with hamburgers and hot dogs.
P. S. Sunday, May 21, I'll miss the church picnic due to being in Colorado visiting relatives.

Coming at Church
Coming at Church
For the 6 weeks after Easter, we will focus on the big ideas that connect our faith to current issues and social concerns.
Sermon Series After Easter: Now What?
We've celebrated Easter resurrection: now what?
Now we get to live our faith in resurrection, by
loving our neighbors,
loving the earth,
caring for the poor,
welcoming refugees,
standing against racism,
speaking up,
welcoming and including everyone...
We'll use scripture, and teachings from our United Methodist Social Principles. Our faith has something to say about how we live in society, informing everything from our politics to how we treat our neighbors.
Politics of Jesus ClassCome to find out, careful study of the Historical Jesus teaches us a lot about how to live in the modern world.
Continuing through May 28, Stephen will teach a five-week class between services on the historical context of Jesus, and how that guides our action in the world today.
Consider attending if you are interested in the historical Jesus, following Jesus in the modern world, understanding your Bible better, or the Social Principles of the United Methodist Church!
Sundays at 9:30 in Epworth Lounge

Mothers Day Gift: Congo Women Arise
Instead of handing out flowers to honor mothers in worship this Sunday, we are making a donation to support building the Mama Lynn Center, a women's shelter project of Congo Women Arise. Learn more about the project here. If you would like to make an additional donation in honor of Mother's Day, just mark your donation for "Congo."

Another Way to Make Your Donation to Church: Give Stock
The smart phone and internet age has supplemented the familiar offering basket for many contributions to our church. Another helpful way is available.
Did you know that the church has two brokerage accounts that can accept transfers of stock? One account is for the Endowment Fund and the other is for general church finance use. The accounts are managed by Ashland Investment Advisors for our church. They are monitored by the Endowment Committee and Finance Committee. The donation of stock can be a win-win for donor and church. The value of the stock at the time of transfer is eligible for a charity tax deduction and no capital gain is taxed on appreciated stock. The church is not subject to income tax and can sell the stock to support its programs and mission, or retain the stock for possible future dividends or appreciation. The donor can also designate at the time of transfer portions of the gift to different church programs.
To arrange a transfer contact the church for instructions. Finance Committee or Endowment Committee members can help.

The Peninsula/Harbor CROP walk started about 30 years ago as a 10 mile walk. It's a shorter walk today but the mission hasn't changed; feed the hungry, clothe the naked, heal the sick, comfort the aged, shelter the homeless. Church World Service is one of nine agencies helping resettle refugees in the USA.
Our own Shared Bread program has been a fortunate beneficiary of Crop Walk. for many years.
We can make a difference showing our love & compassion for those with no home, those fleeing war and those less fortunate.
Church World Service's CROP walk gives us that opportunity. This year's walk at the South Coast Botanic Gardens, Saturday, May 13, 10am to 2pm, is an event to show how much we care. It is also a wonderful opportunity for families and individuals to enjoy this beautiful garden for free. A family of 4 could save $30 by doing the CROP walk and consider donating that amount or more to CROP/CWS' continued support of those in need. Would you consider joining our walk team and/or making a donation? Our team name is "First Redondo UMC."

Want to help with Welcome Team?
The Welcome Team at church helps make sure visitors can find their way around, and get to know our church a little bit. It's also one of the more fun groups of people at our church!
Are you interested in being part of that? The Welcome Team is looking for volunteers who can help about once a month between the two services and/or immediately after the 10:30 service. They promise to train you, give you the information you need ("uhm...what Children go to which classrooms?") and make this easy!
If you'd like to volunteer, or ask questions, email our Welcome Team!
The Youth Went on a Retreat!
The youth group went on an Eco-Justice Retreat a few weeks ago. Here's a video showing off what they did! There's also a Facebook group to keep connected, if you went on the trip. Click here for that!

Have an Old Camera to Donate?
Do you have an older digital camera sitting in a drawer somewhere you would be willing to donate to the Baja Mission 2017 trip? If it still works, we've got a great use for it!
The Baja trip will teach an Arts camp to elementary school children in a community of migrants, and we've got an idea for a photography class.
If you've got one to donate (you won't get this camera back), please drop it off in the church office, or email Stephen with questions! Thanks!

DESSERTS FOR SHARED BREAD
Our dessert supply is still low! Would you like to help? Homemade treats are treasured by our guests – but purchased treats would be wonderful, as well. Please wrap desserts tightly and mark for Shared Bread. Deliver Sunday through Wednesday to the church kitchen (or the office if kitchen is closed.)
This Sunday we have a special treat – our kids are going to sing a brand new song for Mothers’ Day, a song that they themselves wrote (under the watchful eye of our beloved MaryAnn). It’s been in the works and in rehearsal for several weeks. Listen for the line that references Slurpees!
We also will be serenaded by our own Pauline Tamale, who we hear much too infrequently. It’s always a joy when she sings for us.

Stars Go Dim is a pop-rock band that began in 2008 as a side project of the Christian band Pillar. They released their first independent album in 2009 called Love Gone Mad, then another in 2011 called Between Here And Now. In 2015 they signed their first major studio contract with Fervent Records and released their first major studio album titled Stars Go Dim. The primary single from this album is You Are Loved. Co-founder/songwriter Joey Avalos stated "We just love to write songs that make you want to sing along."
David Wallace Crowder, who goes by the mononymous stage name Crowder (in the finest tradition of Cher, Madonna, Adele and Prince), was the lead singer in the now defunct David Crowder Band, a contemporary worship band that disbanded in 2012. He has since gone on to a solo career, releasing his first solo studio album in 2014, under the sixsteps/sparrow label, called Neon Steeple. Come As You Are, one of the cuts from that album, peaked at #3 on the US Christian Songs chart and went on to receive a Grammy nomination in 2015 for Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song. "Temperament" is the word used to describe the way a musical scale is tuned – specifically, how many wavelengths apart are the notes C and G, for example. Over the centuries, there have been many ways to tune a scale, many different temperaments, including Meantone, Werkmeister, Pythagorian, and so on. Each temperament produces a unique sound when played, because not all the scales are perfectly "in tune". For reasons that are too technical to talk about here, in Meantone temperament, the scales of D major and E major are brilliantly in tune, whereas the scales of Eb and Gb are extremely out of tune. Furthermore, every organ builder had a different theory about how the instrument should be tuned once built. So, an organ tuned to Meantone couldn't play pieces of music in Eb or Gb. For years, composers yearned for a temperament that would allow them to write in any key without tuning issues. "Equal temperament" is a temperament that is generally accepted to have been designed by Zhu Zaiyu, a prince in the Chinese Ming court, who solved the tuning mathematically in 1584. Equal temperament became more and more accepted over the years, with composer Girolamo Frescobaldi being a strong advocate. In essence, all the scales can be played, due to the compromise that all the scales are equally slightly out of tune. In 1722, J.S. Bach wrote a book of keyboard music titled Das Wohltemperirte Clavier, or The Well-Tempered Clavier ("clavier" being a word used to describe pretty much any keyboard instrument), designed to show off the flexibility of the scale. The first piece in that book was the Prelude and Fugue in C Major. The prelude is a delightful piece that most young pianists learn because it's relatively easy to play. In 1853, French composer Charles Gounod improvised a melody overtop of the prelude, and his future father-in-law, Pierre-Joseph-Guillaume Zimmerman, wrote it down, then created an arrangement for violin with piano and harmonium (pump organ). In 1859, Jacques Leopold Heugel published a version with the familiar Latin Ave Maria text, which is the version we all know today. The version we sing this week is a 4 part arrangement of that classic I wrote years ago.
