From Pastor Molly: displaying glory
As Jesus prays shortly before his death, in John 17, he speaks a lot about glory. The Greek word used here, doxazō, refers to glory and splendor, which "cause the dignity and worth of some person or thing to become manifest and acknowledged."
If this is how we understand glory, Jesus prayer for God's glory to be revealed is a prayer that our dignity and worth would be visible. It is a prayer that the dignity and worth of all others would be visible. It is a prayer that the dignity and worth of all God's creation would be visible. All this happens not for our sake, but because God is in us.
I don't know if you're at ease or uncomfortable with the idea that Jesus wants you to bear the glory of God, but I believe that this is his prayer: That you shine with glory.
I pray that you would believe this strange good news, and that you would, indeed, shine with glory. The splendor of God is visible whenever we choose acts of mercy and kindness, whenever we speak divine justice fearlessly, whenever we trust grace to love and forgive. God's splendor inspires us to be peacemakers and bridge-builders. God's glory dazzles when we follow where God calls us.
grace and peace,
Pastor Molly
The themes of this series are borrowed from the sections of our United Methodist Social Principles, which you can read online. They speak to a wide range of social issues, and invite us to consider what our faith has to say to issues of our time. There's lots of space in our church for people to think differently on all these issues, but I look forward to opening up opportunities for us to pray, think and talk about what Jesus' gospel has to say to the challenges we face today.

"Now What? Work for World Peace"
Rev. Molly Vetter, preaching
John 17:1-11
Scripture Text: John 17:1 After Yeshua had said these things, he looked up toward heaven and said, “Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, so that the Son may glorify you — 2 just as you gave him authority over all mankind, so that he might give eternal life to all those whom you have given him. 3 And eternal life is this: to know you, the one true God, and him whom you sent, Yeshua the Messiah.
4 “I glorified you on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. 5 Now, Father, glorify me alongside yourself. Give me the same glory I had with you before the world existed.
6 “I made your name known to the people you gave me out of the world. They were yours, you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. 7 Now they know that everything you have given me is from you, 8 because the words you gave me I have given to them, and they have received them. They have really come to know that I came from you, and they have come to trust that you sent me.
9 “I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given to me, because they are yours. 10 Indeed, all I have is yours, and all you have is mine, and in them I have been glorified. 11 Now I am no longer in the world. They are in the world, but I am coming to you. Holy Father, guard them by the power of your name, which you have given to me, so that they may be one, just as we are.
John Wesley's Notes-Commentary: John 17:1-11
Chapter Overview:
In this chapter our Lord prays,
  1. For himself, ver. 1 - 5. 17:1 - 5
  2. For the apostles, ver. 6 - 19; 17:6 - 19
    and again, ver. 24 - 26.
    17:24 - 26
  3. For all believers, ver. 20 - 23. 17:20 - 23 And
  4. For the world, ver. 21 - 23. 17:21 - 23
In his prayer he comprises all he had said from 13:31 ,
and seals, as it were, all he had hitherto done, beholding things past, present, and to come. This chapter contains the easiest words, and the deepest sense of any in all the Scripture: yet is here no incoherent rhapsody, but the whole is closely and exactly connected
.
Verses:
17:1Father - This simplicity of appellation highly became the only - begotten Son of God; to which a believer then makes the nearest approach, when he is fullest of love and humble confidence. The hour is come - The appointed time for it; glorify thy Son - The Son glorified the Father, both before and after his own glorification. When he speaks to the Father he does not style himself the Son of man.
17:2As thou hast given him power over all flesh - This answers to glorify thy Son. That he may give eternal life, &c. - This answers to that thy Son may glorify thee. To all whom thou hast given him - To all believers. This is a clear proof that Christ designed hissacrifice should avail for all: yea, that all flesh, every man, should partake of everlasting life. For as the Father had given him power over all flesh, so he gave himself a ransom for all.
17:3To know - By loving, holy faith, thee the only true God - The only cause and end of all things; not excluding the Son and the Holy Ghost, no more than the Father is excluded from being Lord, 8:6 ; but the false gods of the heathens;and Jesus Christ - As their prophet, priest, and king: this is life eternal - It is both the way to, and the essence of, everlasting happiness.
17:4I have finished the work - Thus have I glorified thee, laying the foundation of thy kingdom on earth.
17:5The glory which I had - He does not say received - He always had it, till he emptied himself of it in the days of his flesh.
17:6I have manifested thy name - All thy attributes; and in particular thy paternal relation to believers; to the men whom thou hast given me - The apostles, and so 17:12 .They were thine - By creation, and by descent from Abraham. And thou hast given them me - By giving them faith in what I have spoken. So 17:9 .
17:7Now they know that all things - Which I have done and spoken, are of thee - And consequently right and true.
17:8They have received them - By faith.
17:9I pray not for the world - Not in these petitions, which are adapted to the state of believers only. (He prays for the world at 17:21 ,23, that they may believe - That they may know God hath sent him.) This no more proves that our Lord did not pray for the world, both before and afterward, than his praying for the apostles alone, 17:6 - 19, proves that he did not pray for them also which shall believe through their word, 17:20 .
17:10All things that are mine are thine, and that are thine are mine - These are very high and strong expressions, too grand for any mere creature to use; as implying that all things whatsoever, inclusive of the Divine nature, perfections, and operations, are the common property of the Father and the Son. And this is the original ground of that peculiar property, which both the Father and the Son have in the persons who were given to Christ as Mediator; according to what is said in the close of the verse, of his being glorified by them; namely, believing in him, and so acknowledging his glory.
17:11Keep them through thy name - Thy power, mercy, wisdom, that they may be one - with us and with each other; one body, separate from the world: as we are - By resemblance to us, though not equality.

Sermon Series After Easter: Now What?
We've celebrated Easter resurrection: now what?

Now we get to live our faith in resurrection, by
loving our neighbors,
loving the earth,
caring for the poor,
welcoming refugees,
standing against racism,
speaking up,
welcoming and including everyone...

We'll use scripture, and teachings from our United Methodist Social Principles. Our faith has something to say about how we live in society, informing everything from our politics to how we treat our neighbors.
Politics of Jesus Class

John Rutter is a British composer, born in London in 1945, and one of the most recognized composers of church music in the world.  His work includes carols (both original and arrangements of familiar carols), anthems, choral works and larger musical compositions.  He has written for the King’s Singers and regularly records his music with his own chorus, the Cambridge Singers.  Many of his larger works, including his Gloria and his Requiem, are considered classics and are part of standard repertoire (our choir sang the first movement of the Gloria on Easter morning last year).  His piece A Gaelic Blessing, also known by its opening line Deep Peace, was commissioned by the chancel choir of 1st United Methodist Church of Omaha, Nebraska, and their conductor Mel Olsen in 1978.  The original text was not a specifically sacred text, but rather an old...

John Rutter is a British composer, born in London in 1945, and one of the most recognized composers of church music in the world.  His work includes carols (both original and arrangements of familiar carols), anthems, choral works and larger musical compositions.  He has written for the King's Singers and regularly records his music with his own chorus, the Cambridge Singers. The original text was not a specifically sacred text, but rather an old Gaelic rune that made reference to elements of nature.  Rutter added a line referencing Jesus and Amen to it to make it a Christian anthem.  It has become popular for baptisms, weddings and funerals, and was performed at the funeral Mass for Tip O'Neil.  It became a hit when a recording by Aled Jones was released in 2003, and has been recorded often, including by the composer with the Cambridge Singers and the City of London Sinfonia.Dona Nobis Pacem is the Latin phrase for Grant Us Peace. It is found all over the Catholic music world, especially in the Mass Ordinary and the Requiem Mass.  The canon version is very famous, and has been around for a very long time.  I've seen it attributed to Palestrina, but I'm a bit dubious.  It was, however, featured in an episode of M.A.S.H., with Father Mulcahy leading the singing.  It has three sections that go together, and is to be sung by 3 voices, or 3 groups of people.  As a canon, singer 1 begins singing part 1.  As singer 1 finishes part 1 and begins part 2, singer 2 begins part 1.  As singer 2 begins part 2, singer 3 begins part 1.  Ultimately, the 3 parts are sung simultaneously, and the effect is beautiful.Make Me A Channel Of Your Peace is also commonly known as the Prayer of St. Francis.  However, it was almost certainly not written by St. Francis.  The true author is unknown and it was more probably written around the time of the outbreak of World War One.  It is also incorrectly called the Serenity Prayer of St. Francis.  The Serenity Prayer is, in fact, a different prayer from the 20th century written by Reinhold Neibuhr.  Sebastian Temple adapted the words in 1967 to create the hymn that we know now.
Hailing from the small coastal town of Bangor in Northern Ireland, the Rend Collective is a group of "twenty-somethings" that gathered at Rend, what the band describes as "a ministry for spiritually hungry young adults, desperately seeking an authentic, raw and real expression of church, which was informally pastored by bandleader, Gareth Gilkeson."  Their first album –
Homemade Worship by Handmade People – was released in 2012, and was followed by a string of hits in the contemporary Christian music world.  Their music is based around older instruments - their native Irish folk instruments, old rock and roll guitars and assorted other whimsical musical toys - and has a raw, uninhibited style that gets the toes tapping and the feet stomping.  They don't call themselves a folk band, but insist rather "We are not actually an indie-folk band - despite all the beards and bow-ties and banjos. We are a celebration band. It's just a coincidence that folk music and celebration make a great pairing!"  Their song Build Your Kingdom Here is from the album Homemade Worship By Handmade People, released in 2012, and is a classic foot-stomper that never fails to engage the listener.
